I think there are not too many useful flying pokemon in HG/SS other than pidgeot or crobat to use during the beginning/middle of the main storyline.

Flying pokemon I can think of: (Remember I am talking about useful ones during the storyline)

Pidgeot: Not bad neither great. A decent flying pokemon
Noctowl: Regular for some people but not useful IMO
Crobat: NIce, fast. Great typing
Jumpluff: Are you kidding me? This thing is totally pointless IMO
Fearow: Decent one, but at the same time kinda bad
Farfetch'd: So bad that it doesn't deserve any comments at all
Dodrio: Nice pokemon (the bad thing is that you can only have it after you are almost reaching the Pokemon League)
Aerodactly: Can only be obtain REALLY late during gameplay
Dragonite: Excellent but it you obtain it kinda late and it can be hard to train
Ledian: synonym of crap
Togetic: Can be useful but the bad thing is that togekiss can only be obtain after the pokemon league
Xatu: Interesting typing but it can't learn to many attacks that are not STATUS attacks

So for you... Which flying pokemon can be useful during the storyline in pokemon HG/SS??

Skarmory. Has a naturally diverse moveset and has resistance against dragon and psychic attacks and is immune to poison in addition to ground. Mine held his ground against Lugia and helped sweep the Elite Four--in some cases he held out better than my dragonite did. Yeah, you catch him pretty late on, but he's worth the patience and the time training IMHO.

Before I got my Skarmory I relied on Pidgeot and Togetic...problem was they kept getting creamed by rock slide. Togetic's moveset is more diverse than Pidgeot's at least.

The journey continues...

Agreed. You can catch Skarmory in Route 45, but with a very small encounter chance. I spent a lot of time looking for it, yet it was worth having it.

Spearow always has and always will be amazing ingame, and is unquestionably the best on the list. Available early, great attack and speed, usable movepool; what else could you want?

Also imo Crobat isn't worth the effort whatsoever.
I've got a plan so cunning you could brush your teeth with it.

Interesting thread! Anyways, will agree on Skarmory being quite handy, as well as the Spearow line. Crobat is another favourite of mine to use as well - came in handy quite often for me when I used it.

Jumpluff for me was not too bad for my grass monotype runthrough, although it was probably more useful in that instance than on a regular team spot (Sleep Powder + Leech Seed with U-turn was handy). Also on Dragonite you can start training it as early as Goldenrod if you don't mind some Vortorb Flip to get a Dratini.

Any thoughts on Gligar, curiously?

Xatu, crobat, togetic, and jumpluff are all flying types I've used (am currently using jumpluff.)
They all have their strengths and weaknesses.
Xatu has good speed and ok offense, but I always ended up giving myself TM29. Having wish/confuse ray/psycho shift can be very strategic.
Crobat is pure speed. Confuse ray and poison fang just decimates things.
Togetic is a special beast (which you can get before national dex, just trade the stone :p.)
Jumpluff is better as support; right now I'm using it mainly for it's sleep powder and leech seeding.

Crobat is my signature pokemon, so I naturally used it more than any other flyer, but it really does make a great staller with Confuse Ray and Fly. Give him Poison Fang for the poison chance, and he's good to go. :D

I've also used Jumpluff extensively. It's not a sweeper to be sure, but makes a great supporter via Leech Seed, Poisonpowder/Sleep Powder/Stun Spore, and U-Turn. ;P

I used Pidgeot in Soul Silver and it was decent. I remember Fearow being about the same back when I played Crystal - not sure if it would be better or worse in HG/SS. Crobat was a beast in Platinum but I wanted to switch up my party for SS. Dodrio would have been a nice addition if it wasn't found so late in the game.

Skarmory has been a mainstay for me since I breed it from female skarmory and a male fearow to get a level 1 skarmory with pursuit, drill peck, roost, and aerial ace. raise it up and it will sweep the psychic gym, the water gym, the poison gym, the rock gym, and do decent in the grass gym to name a few. But my fly slave is salemence just because it learned it naturally during evolution.
oh my god! my account still exists in this kiddie pool? guess what! these mods you are all bowing down to? they're all kids themselves! I swear it's like a real adult working at burger world and bowing down to the acne faced dweeb that is doing his high school homework in his little office while yelling at you to clean out the grease trap! it's just a freaking game!!!! eventually you will all grow out of it!!! see you in the real world. I'd say any if you like it. To me, I like Farfetch'd and Crobat. Crobat is what I'm using now but I've used a Farfetch'd on two previous runs. But I think if you want a certain poemon, but its crappy, then deal with it and it will end up good

I agree with this topic 100%! 1.If I want to fly around I use any flying pokemon and use it as a HM slave. 2.If I choose a flying type I pick Xatu, Pidgeot, and Skarmory. 3.Otherwise SS/HG lets you trade pokemon from D/P/PL so grab a flying type. Example: SS I beat first badge I traded my onix for a swellow...*etc*

Ok looking at Half of the stuff you wrote, your biased between Attacking Flyers. As you think Jumpluff,Ledian and Xatu are bad.

I did a Mono Flying Run on Soul Silver Mid Summer. And I would love to beg to differ.

Jumpluff was the BEST Pokemon on my team. I didn't have a Crobat or Pidgeot on my team (as you think they are good) You think he is bad because he is a Support Pokemon. Sure I might be Biased for Support Pokemon, and sure I might be Patient and more Strategetic. But in SS I was Underleveled, and If it wasn't for this guy, I would have never beat the Game.

Ledian is good to,Reflect and Light Screen for support. And the Only Flying Pokemon in Johto to get a Good Fighting Move (Unless your Name is Scyther with Technition and Rock Smash) I only replaced this guy because I never used a Scyther and I needed HM's but I missed this guy the second I deposited him. He is not Crap by any means.

Togetic is good, even without a Shiny Stone for Togekiss,Anceint Power? Serene Grace? Awesome! FireBlast and Blizzard having 30% to Burn/Freeze. Togekiss can wait 'cus Togetic handles Johto just fine.

Farfetch'd maybe Under Used, or Under Estimated but in the right hands it's a beast. Swords Dance and Leaf Blade? Yupperz. I say once it learns those moves, it is better then Dodrio. I've used both and I perfer Farfetch'd

Mantine and Delibird are missing. Both are crap.

I prefer Gyarados. A pain to evolve, but very useful.
OBJECTION!

Good sp.def, water absorb, and an abundance of stab moves (except flying.)
I would know, I used a modest one with water absorb on a previous run. Set up an agility and you can kick butt with ice beam + hydro pump.

Mantine isn't bad it's the Mirror of Skarmory

The only difference between Skarmory and Mantine's stat distribution is in their defenses and attack; Mantine has 80 base Special Attack and 140 base Special Defense, but Skarmory has 80 base Attack and 140 base Defense.

Also

Mantine is tied with Kyogre for having the highest Special Defense out of all Water-type Pokémon.
Mantine has the highest Special Defense out of all non-legendary Flying-types.

Mantine was pretty useful with its high defensive stats, and pretty good SpA. It isn't very hard to train either.

Or Pidgey line, because Pidgeott is strong and fast and easy to train and is found straight away in game. So Pidgeott will probably be the mist useful, Noctowl is not as strong.

Noctowl, not strong? What? He makes Morty a breeze (more specificly Gengar). Being a Normal Type he is immune to Shadow Ball, he has Insonmia so get get Hypnosised, having Psychic Moves for SE damage. Only thing you Fear (though not really) is Sucker Punch and Mean Look. The Former can be easily be counter-acted with Hypnosis.
