Technically, one can use embryonic stem cells without even touching an embryo/Fetus. ;)
That article was writen in 2006...anyways it also stated some doubts about it...so yeah...still don't support it...
I'm currently working on some novels. If you're interested you can read them here:

Well if it's that old, then wouldn't that mean their have been advances in the field since then? Like the topic of the OP.

If it means that we can get rid of AIDS, then I'm all for it.

*Note*

The Stem Cell procedure in question does not harm the fetus in any shape or form, just an fyi.

Huge breakthrough, but at the same time stem cell research is also a touchy subject. You're gonna get the hardcore Christians debating this like crazy!

Why should it be a touchy subject? Because of a group of religious fanatics who can't take their minds out of an old and rather morally reprehensible book? I would rather save someone already alive and with feelings and sentience.
<tekiraboshi> This Christmas I asked Santa for Pokémon names that everyone loved and not a single person would complain or say they hated them
<tekiraboshi> why, Santa

Your argument doesn't change the fact that those people exist and some even make it to presidency. Got a long way to go before stem cell research is finally going to be widely accepted and even supported.

I'm glad something like this happened though. Maybe this will open the eyes of some closed-minded individuals.

Yeah exactly that. Some people are so all up in arms about it. You know.. the ones who think that "the gays" caused AIDS (they don't even know you can be born with it if the mother has aids or it can be contracted with transfusions or even something as simple as a papercut.)

Then couple that with stem cell research.. the ones where they use embryos and the ones where people think they're killing unborn children to get it.. and there you go. You have a freaking riot right there.

I'm not saying that it's a touchy subject for me. But you can see how it would be a touchy subject for many people and why those people would be against something so revolutionary as this.

Too bad it's really risky right now.. hopefully they can improve that.. it'd be awesome.

@[email protected] I just hope one day far into the future it doesn't become like that Doctor Who episode where they have pods of billions of people and they give them all the diseases in the world so they could manufacture cures.. cause that'd be scary.. like.. an embryo plant.. @[email protected] *SHudder* But there goes my mind again.. haha.. always thinking so.. "Science fiction."
Holy.. imagine if there were only females left in the world? ._. Since we can clone ourselves.. we wouldn't need men.. haha! :C They can't clone men though. Sorry your y chromosome is so unstable, guys.. :C..

.. Oh snap now I'm going offtopic.

I have to agree with everyone else, this is huge. If they could progress a way to cure HIV/AIDS then who knows what they might go on to start curing?

But, like what has been stated already, there's going to be huge controversy. In my own opinion, I'm all for it. It may become big in more forward-thinking countries before it catches on in more opposed countries.

Like, condoms were banned in Ireland up until much more recently than other countries [due to the influence of the church, HMV were sued for selling them in their stores]. But now you can buy them anywhere. It's a bad example, but maybe Stem-Cell Research will be the same. All people need to see the benefits of an advance in science such as this.

This is nothing short of brilliant. This will save many lives and will boost the life expectancy of African countries.
Granted it will need more testing, and FDA evauluation in the US, but if it holds up, it should be used immediately to solve the AIDS crisis in Africa.
