Chapter 1
Five years later…
Brad, a Pokemon Trainer, stood at the peak of Mount Silver, looking over the regions of Kanto and Johto, of which the mountain bordered. Beside him stood his six Pokemon: Charizard, Pikachu, Beedrill, Luxray, Sceptile, and Umbreon. He was here to take a rest after a long day of training. Ever since he lost the Indigo League two years ago to his rival, Derek Oak, he had disappeared into Mount Silver to train to defeat his rival and win the Indigo League to have a chance to challenge the Elite Four.
He had not made contact with any of his friends, family, or anyone, really, save for an old lady that lived at the foot of the mountain. He went to meet her to gather food when he had run out and could not find more.
Turning to his Pokemon, he said, “We will rest here tonight, then get up bright and early for more training!”
Some of the Pokemon looked excited, while the others didn’t. Brad frowned; that sort of attitude might cost him the Indigo League. He could not afford to lose.
After losing to his rival in a titanic clash, Derek insulted him, calling him “weaker than a Magikarp robbed of water!” Worse, his childhood friend, Katie, refused to be friends with a “weakling,” for many people had faith that Brad would be able to bring pride to Pallet Town, and some had doubts that Derek would be able to accomplish victory. Derek lost to some cruel Trainer named Mike, who later lost as well. Brad felt he had brought shame to Pallet Town, and swore never to return until he became stronger.
As his Pokemon made themselves comfortable, Brad looked at the setting sun, sighed, and slipped into his sleeping bag. Several moments later, sleep claimed him.

Meanwhile, in Pallet Town, Derek Oak stood in the center of his house, while Trainers were approaching from all across Kanto and Johto to Pallet Town. The Trainer knew why: Derek Oak, Trainer from Pallet Town, grandson of Professor Oak, had defeated the Elite Four only a week before. Derek was to make a speech before hundreds of Trainers about his victory. He checked his PokeGear clock: 8:15. In another fifteen minutes he would have to make the speech.
Derek heard footsteps approaching and turned to see Katie approaching him. He smiled, and she smiled back. Two days after his victory over the Indigo League, Katie and Derek had gotten together, discussed recent events, and began dating.
I have the prettiest girl in Pallet Town as my girlfriend, Derek thought, I’m the Champion of the Elite Four, and everyone in the world respects me. Life is good! If that weakling fool Brad could see me now, he would be so jealous…if his feeble mind could process such an emotion.
To Katie, he said, “How’s it going?”
“Great,” Katie replied. “I just got off the phone with your grandfather. He said he’d be here in several minutes for your interview. Pretty nervous, huh?”
“I’m Derek Oak, Champion Trainer,” Derek replied. “I don’t get nervous. Instead, I am thinking of Brad’s expression when he sees me on live television as Champion!”
When he mentioned Brad’s name, Derek thought he saw a look of hurt sweep through Katie’s eyes, though it was gone before the Champion could be sure. Instead, Katie said, “Well, see you later. I need to meet up with a few of my friends.”
Katie walked off, while Derek smiled after her. Gathering himself up, Derek tossed his Blastoise’s PokeBall into the air and called his starter. His companion for three years, Derek’s Blastoise was his strongest Pokemon, willing to battle endlessly to defeat great odds for its Trainer, and it was that determination that brought Derek and his team to victory.
“Well, old buddy, it seems that things are looking up for us!” Derek said with glee. Blastoise smiled and whirled around when people began to try to enter Derek’s house. They were reporters, trying to get a pre-speech interview. They were discouraged when Blastoise growled and prepared to attack.
“Thanks Blastoise,” Derek said, pulling out his speech cards. He checked his clock: five minutes until he had to give the speech, and it was a four minute walk to the area where he had to give his speech. Derek placed his speech cards in his pocket and, motioning to Blastoise to follow, exited his house and approached the center of Pallet Town.
