I have been browsing ebay like a bad little Pokemon addict and I see games that are apparently custom/hacked (Im not knowledgeable enough to really know the difference) such as Pokemon jade and chaos black and so on. What I want to know is: are these games worth the money, which games are actually cool and at least worth a purchase, and if these will hurt your system. I honestly wasn't sure what sub forum to put this in so please advise, sorry If I made a mistaken choice. What do you think of these games and which do you own, if any of you? Discuss!

The telefang ones (Diamond and Pearl) are entertaining in that the engrish is pretty weird and amusing (and if you can get past that and the swearing due to said engrish, the music and battle system isn't half bad!). But note a number have saving issues (the one I have did not however, unless one dies and doesn't turn off the game instead of continuing). Can't say I know many other ones too well but usually you're looking at the 'it's bad' scenario, with the odd 'so bad its good' game. But tbh you might as well try a rom anyways, not much point risking money on something that quite possibly will be sub-par and/or not even work properly, personally.

Can't say any would hurt the game system though.

A good majority of those games you are seeing are not worth anything because they are meant to be distributed for free over the internet. Some, such as Chaos Black and ShinyGold, are actually rom hacks so do not buy any of them. This is one of the main reasons why some of the newer ones have anti piracy intros, because nobody wants any of those scammers to make any profit off of their hard work. As for how to get roms and emulators, Google is your best bet and I cannot say anything else about that. The emulator is what plays the game itself by simulating the original system and the rom IS the game. As for the hacks, the most popular method for distribution is the IPS patch and I use a program called Lunar IPS to handle that part. Lunar IPS can be found here and this is used to modify "clean" roms and turn them into hacks: http://fusoya.eludevisibility.org/lips/

There's a whole emulation section halfway down the main page that this topic is significantly more suited for.

I'm no expert in ROM hacking, but I can tell you this: Selling a hard cartidge of a hacked game is illegal and the seller should be reported to eBay. You shouldn't buy those games off of eBay when they're meant to be downloaded for free. :P

Pretty much what Timbjerr said. It's a bad idea to buy them. If you wanna play hacks, you should just get an emulator and download the ROM. But since this isn't discussion about the official games, I'm gunna close this up. Discuss hacks in their appropriate threads in Emulation. But yeah...avoid those hard copy hacks.
