The Sugimori art style I mean. Every time a new generation comes along I feel like the style is a little different from the first classic games and how they designed their pokemon.. At least from an artists perspective I find it hard to create fakemon when I keep trying to keep up with the current way they draw their pokemon in each game they make. @[email protected] Do you guys think it stays consistent? Or if it doesn't is it a good or bad thing?

Well the styles have definatly changed over the years. The two most significant being betweem 1st and 2nd gen to 3rd gen, but I think that is more of a thing from going to a different platform. The other major change being from FR/LG to R/S/E, which I always thought was a bit weird. I mean, the R/S/E style is so ratically different from the ones before and after it it's astouding, and I haven't seen any Pokemon game to date emulate the R/S/E style.

Sure from 3rd to 4th gen the style also changed, but it is not as significant as the aforementioned changes. But yeah from 4th to 5th there seems to be a pretty minor change, but once again, it is of little significance in comparison to the other changes. And you know what the funny thing is? Out of all of these styles, I can't draw a single one.

Now I'm no artist, but I am going to throw my two cents worth in here.

In the first 151 there were a lot of awesome ones and when you look at them you can almost always tell what their element was. It's not like that anymore. To me it seems like they just make them as cutesy as possible and then throw in a random type or two for them.
I'm probably the most indecisive person you'll ever meet.
So much in fact, that I was going to change this font to a cool color, but I couldn't decide which on.

While I'm not on par with the average fanartist here at PC, let alone Ken Sugimori himself, my art style has changed improved drastically since I first started drawing when I was eight years old.

Ask any artist and they'll tell you that your style will get cleaner and more sophisticated with practice, which is just what's been happening to Sugimori. Compare:

vs.

The former is Pikachu's official art from the release of Red/Green and the latter is Pikachu's official art from the release of FireRed/LeafGreen. :P

Well, yeah, art is going to change. Especially over a really long period like 15 years. I haven't even been drawing for that long and my style has been constantly changing. I don't really even have a style, since I am always changing it up. I personally like the newer art better than the older art.

Here's another question for you guys. Is it okay to change the style of a video game's sprites throughout the games they create?
I personally think so. If I recall, Sugimori isn't even working on the character design anymore. His responsibilities in that regard have drastically faded with every generation after Gen II, as the games get bigger dev teams and therefore more cooks in the design kitchen.
whoops

Giant Pikachu images hurt the eyes :/

But the "official" artwork for the Pokemon has become cleaner over the years... which is only natural. The same thing with the sprites... very generation, they get cleaned up just a little bit more (even when their poses get more odd) as new technology and higher-resolution displays allow for more detail and a larger color selection than before.

I'm not sure if Sugimori is in charge of designing them or just drawing them, but IMO the designs of the trainers has definitely taken a nosedive as of late... especially in B/W.

All artists change and develop new skills and styles as time passes on, so it's kind of hard to expect Sugimori to keep his style from 15 years ago.
He was great back then, and he's still amazing to me now.

It is unfortunate for those who try to mimic the style for Fakemon purposes, but maybe you should try to change it up a notch too just like Sugimori does.
It may make things a tad easier for you. XD;

I tried... x3; Then I got bashed a lot on dA so I deleted those pics 8c They were like "This is not the true poke style!!! D8<)

But besides that really fascinating responses c8 I agree people's styles do change over time. I would know I have my sketchbooks from 4th grade xD And I'm a senior now. And I wasn't entirely sure if Sugimori is still even in charge of designs anymore. I'd be sick of it by now :I *shot*
