I was doing a challenge for Red Version and i said i needed to have a Golduck for that challenge. My favorite animal is a Duck so i called the Psyduck 'Quack'. My brother then said that Psyduck is a Platypus. But if it was a Platypus why would it be called Psyduck? What do you guys think Duck or Platypus?

Hmm.. never thought of it like that before.
Spoiler:

After looking at those images, I will have to say.... Platypus. It looks like a platypus a lot more than a duck. Plus Golduck has no wings. AND its arms AND legs are both webbed like a platypus. And Platypus has a ducks bill, as does Psyduck and Golduck, and they both swim under the water in lakes, while breathing air.

I have always though of them as ducks, but they cannot be a duck... They are a platypus! YAY!

Psyduck lives in mud, has fur instead of feathers, a tuft of hair on its head, claws, a long mammal-esque tail, and lacks wings. It also evolves into a creature loosely based off a Kappa, which has a lot more in common with a platypus than a duck. It's a platypus.

You can't just say it's a duck because it's named Psyduck. I suppose starfish are fish and dragonflies are dragons?

A Kappa has a lot more in common with a platypus than a duck?

The Japanese wouldn't have even known what a platypus was when they created the the Kappa, saying that they're connected to platypuses is utterly ridiculous.

If anything, Golduck allegedly being a Kappa is evidence for it being a duck, not a platypus.

KirbyChu said it had a lot more incommon with a platypus rather than a duck, no connected...

But yeah, Psyduck is definitely a platypus.

I think Psyduck is part both platypus and rubber duck. It has features of a platypus but it also looks like a yellow rubber ducky.

Regardless saying that it's a Kappa, and thus has more in common with a platypus is incorrect, because Kappa draw influences from ducks, not platypuses.
Ergo, if it's based on a Kappa it's not thus based on a platypus, because they're unrelated. He contradicted himself in that respect.

Personally I don't care whether it's a duck or what have you. It's a Pokémon.

Also definitely is an absolute. Psyduck is not definitely anything unless you can prove it with concrete evidence.

It's most likely this. I personally think Psyduck has more in common with a platypus, but it probably draws inspiration from ducks and kappas as well. Pokemon tend to be based upon multiple things.

Okay, I never said that kappas were inspired by platypuses, but does this really look like a duck to you?

Spoiler:

I'll admit that was a rather moot point on my part, but Golduck being based on kappa doesn't support the duck theory by any means.

Well, considering they are both in the Ground egg group, they should be considered more mammalian than bird-like. To my knowledge they are supposed to be Duck-billed Platypus'. You see, that right there is where the confusion starts. If they were ducks, Nintendo probably would have made them part flying-type, considering ducks can fly...Still, as much as i hate to do this, i would consider them more like Platypus' than Ducks.

Than again, if i remember correctly, Platypus' are supposed to have poisonous spurs on their hind leg(s), but Golduck and Psyduck don't have any visible spurs...

I'm kind of Neutral on this one. I think Nintendo/Game Freak intended to make Golduck and Psyduck have features of both animals.

Though Golduck have no wings, only webbed hands and feet, it is still deemed as a duck instead of a platypus.

Duck Pokémon (got info from Bulbapedia)

That is why i think Golduck is a duck and not a platypus.

yeah, this what I was going to say. Besides, when we first found Psyduck and Golduck, where were they? Out in the water!

But hey, platypus can also be found in the water. =/
Honestly, I have no idea which animal works best for Psyduck and Golduck. And just because duck is in its name, and is its species name, doesn't make it an actual duck. Look at Bidoof! We ALL know that Bidoof is based on a beaver, yet its species name is the Plump Mouse Pokemon (how many freakin' mouse Pokemon do we have already, anyways? T_T).
I REALLY don't know what Psyduck and Golduck could be, but I'm more on the platypus side than the duck side. :x

Okay okay. Can we just say Psyduck looks like a "duck" I'd say a rubber duck 8I Golduck is a platypus/duck thing. It uses psy powers and does have DUCK in it's name so I'd say Nintendo was leaning more towards DUCK when they named/designed it. And they don't have wing... But that's not really a legitimate argument because mice doesn't have ears shaped like Pikachu's and yet.. it's a mouse... 8c So why not be a wingless aquatic sea duck
