Yes, the design is important.
But sometimes the story of the pokemon and his role is more important.

Design matters more, but I take both into consideration when choosing what Pokemon to use. Fortunately, it just so happens that most of the Pokemon names I feel sound stupid (Pikachu, for instance) are attached to Pokemon that I also think look stupid (again, Pikachu).

I voted for both..

Yeah, you can nickname Pokemon in game, but personally I treat the nickname as a "given name" or "first name". I still have to deal with the species name whenever someone else uses the Pokemon with the horrid name, which can be annoying. And I have a policy of not nicknaming legendaries because one time Latias' image almost got ruined in my eyes when me and some peers came up with the name LT. STAR as kids. >_> Plus, sometimes players can't think of decent names either, so you hold out and hope that the developers had better ideas than you namewise.

And it's true that the design is what we stare at the most, but the name comes up just as often. You have to use it in conversations and PokeDex/Bulbapedia research, you stare at it in the battle text (i.e., "[Player] sent out [Pokemon name]!") and the summary screen. In the anime you also have to hear its name constantly said by the characters, as well as repeatedly uttered in PokeSpeak by the actual Pokemon itself.

I guess I get used to designs better...names are a different story. I mean, in spoken word you can't really utilize the "design" of the Pokemon, so the name is all that you have to go off of.

Let's just get decent names and decent designs to avoid this problem altogether!
