Yeah, they're not original.

While it's true that they're not changing the storyline too much, Game Freak is still adding more and more things to the original formula. Newer games actually have an interesting story added on to the original 8 gyms and Elite Four formula. That's just my opinion, anyways.

While you end up the same way and do pretty much the same thing, the story in completely original and, more importantly, interesting. Team Plasma is the most real evil organization so far, they don't hide out in some building or cave and wait for you to come beat them up. They're story is dynamic. And the thing with all the gym leaders coming to help: genius.

If you're looking for something completely different in the main games then you'll probably wait awhile, but each game gets something different and the new ones are the most interesting yet.

Are they original? I most definetly think they are, in some ways. First off, they have over 150 Pokemon that you use throughout the main storyline, and no Pokemon from other regions until after the storyline, like Gen I (excpet there were no other Pokemon in Gen I). The storyline makes some sense - The main guy is actually pretty intelligent, the method of taking power is relatable, and manipulation is used massively, unlike pretty much every evil team since Team Rocket (And even Team Rocket wasn't nearly as manipulating as Team Plasma). The graphics and the seasons are a huge leap foward. The new methods of battle, the new attacks, and the new or improved abilities make things fresh and original. All of these things make the games unique to me.

Although they have a whole lot of new features that they added on, like the graphics are greatly improved and there's a very deep storyline, basically it's still the same. Beat all the gym leaders, become the champion, beat up the evil team, and catch all the Pokemon. That's how it's been since they first games.

Gen 5 has new stuff that's not in the other generations like awesome cutscenes, the fact that in some conversations you can actually see that person's lips moving, the Camera angles, Ferris wheel, Not battling the Champ for you to finish the game, a villain catching a legendary and stuff

Make sense? Oh, what fun is there in making sense?

Basically all the games are the same, but major transitions have only been made between Gen I and II and Gen IV and V.
One would wish those major transitions would occur more often.
How was there not a major change between Gen II and III? That was probably the biggest transition yet.
