The Fire Within

Chapter 1 - A Trainers Beginning

A breeze blew by my face as I stood in front of the Professor Elm Pokemon Research Lab. I turned to see my partner and my best friend, Torchic, sitting on my shoulder.

“Torchic, it’s time to go inside,” I told my tiny chick Pokemon.

Torchic turned to me and gave a loud, happy chirp. Torchic was always ready for something new and exciting and would gladly welcome it. The two of us where more alike than most trainers with their Pokemon, we met in our home region of Hoenn. Both of my parents worked for Team Magma. The worst thing about was my mom was a Team Magma executive and my father was Maxie, Team Magma’s leader.

At age 10, we each received our first Pokemon. My first Pokemon was the offspring of both my parents Blaziken’s, my Torchic. Even though I hated Team Magma, I enjoyed my Torchic which made me actually happy to wake up every morning and work with my new partner.

However, I still had a growing hatred for Team Magma. And with Torchic being around me, he eventually grew to hate Team Magma as well. It took me four years to get the courage to run away. So one night while everyone was sleeping, I snuck out of my living area. I crept into the storage room and grabbed five Pokeballs and the other essentials for going on a Pokemon journey.

I wanted to travel around Hoenn, but got afraid Team Magma would find me. So, I stowed away on a boat, not knowing where it would take me. When we docked, I saw it. I was in the Johto region. My first stop was New Bark Town, to meet Professor Elm and start my journey.

“Let’s do this!” I exclaimed as I walked inside.

The two of us walked up the steps and opened the door. Once inside, I saw the well known Professor Elm, known for his studies on Pokemon Eggs. He was currently assisting two other teens, a boy and a girl who where holding hands.

The boy and girl where the same height at 5’5, the girl had blonde hair with light brown streaks that went about two inches past her shoulders while the boy had dirty blonde hair that just went past his ears but curled at the ends a tiny bit.

“Hi, may I help you?” Professor Elm asked.

I was too shocked to speak for it had just hit me that I would be beginning my journey and leaving my horrible past behind.

“Uh… hello,” the girl said.

“Is he alright?” the boy whispered.

I realized the three people thought I was psycho for not talking. So I forced myself to speak.

“Hi, I want to start my Pokemon journey and I didn’t know what to do about it, so I came here,” I explained.

“Oh, that’s great. Come here please,” he replied as he waved his hand signalling for me to stand beside the other two teens.

I walked over beside the two teens and listened to Professor Elm teach us about Pokemon.

“By the way, I’m Zoë and this is my boyfriend Trenton,” the girl whispered to me.

“Nice to meet…” I said unable to finish my sentence.

It was her beauty that stopped me cold. I couldn’t speak with her looking at me. Her sparkling brown eyes fixed on me left me tongue tied.

“Trenton,” Professor Elm interrupted.

I quickly turned to face Professor Elm and tried to ignore Zoë.

“You’re first, please choose your Pokemon,” he told him.

Trenton let go of Zoë’s hand and stepped forward towards a case that held three Pokemon. Trenton stroked his chin and looked at each Pokeball carefully before picking the one on the right. Trenton walked back to Zoë and grabbed her hand again.

“Okay Zoë, you’re up,” Professor Elm explained.

Zoë stepped forward and let go of Trenton’s hand. She had no hesitation to which Pokeball she wanted and quickly grabbed the ball in the middle.

“Now that everyone has a Pokemon, I will let you go,” Professor Elm told the three of us.

“Yes!” Trenton exclaimed. “I’m out of here!”

Trenton and Zoë ran outside and in direction of Cherrygrove City. Professor Elm gave a chuckle before approached me with a smile.

“Kyle is it?” he asked.

“Yes sir,” I replied.

“Have you decided which path you will take as a trainer,” Professor Elm asked.

“I think I’m going to be a trainer,” I explained to the Professor.

“That’s wonderful; I’ve never seen you around here. Where are you from?”

“The Hoenn region,” I replied.

“Interesting; I guess that explains the Torchic,” he said.

“Yep,” I told him.

“Well, I won’t keep you. Good luck on your journey,” Professor Elm said.

“Thank you Professor,” I replied.

I turned around and walked out the door. As I walked down the steps, I saw a boy looking through the window. His hair was tidy with small bangs that were swept to the side. He seemed to be doing some recon work, but it didn’t bother me much.

“Torchic, let’s go,” I told my Pokemon.

Torchic smiled and gave a joyful cluck. He jumped off my shoulder and into my backpack.

“Alright then, we’re off,” I said.

I was about to step into Route 29 when I heard the sound of shattering glass. I turned to see the boy who was staring inside the lab smashed the window and jumped inside.

“HEY!” I yelled at him.

I ran to the window to see what he was doing. I saw he had punched Professor Elm in the face along with his aid. He snatched the last Pokeball and ran out the door.

“Let’s go Torchic,” I told him.

Torchic nodded and the two of us gave chase to the thief. He ran into Route 29 where I followed him.

“Stop thief!” I exclaimed as I ran after him.

The boy didn’t speak; he just tossed out a Pokeball. The ball opened releasing a small crocodile Pokemon.

“Totodile!” the small blue crocodile yelled.

“A Totodile, that must be the Pokemon he stole from Professor Elm,” I said to Torchic.

The boy stopped running and turned to see me.

“Totodile use Water Gun!” he commanded.

Totodile leaned backward while storing water. Totodile then pushed itself forward and released a strong blast of water. It struck Torchic and I knocking the two of us backward. The boy then called Totodile back to its Pokeball and took off in the direction of Cherrygrove City.

“He got away,” I said angrily as I picked up a small stone and threw it in his direction.

Torchic shook his feathers to get the water off of him. He never enjoyed water because of him being a fire type.

“Torchic, we need to return to Professor Elm’s lab,” I explained to the tiny chick.

“Torchic,” Torchic replied as he nodded.

I picked him up and placed him in my backpack. We weren’t to far away from New Bark Town so it was an easy walk, only five minutes. We had finally returned to the lab. I opened the door to see Professor Elm talking to a police officer.

“Professor,” I said.

Professor Elm tilted his head to the right to see me calling for him.

“Kyle, something terrible has happened,” he told me not knowing I already knew about the stolen Totodile.

“I know Professor, I chased after him but he got away,” I explained with great sorrow.

“Well, thank you for trying,” he replied.

The police officer approached me with a pad and paper in hand.

“So, you saw this boy?” he questioned me.

“Yes, do you need anything?” I asked him.

“What did he look like?” he replied.

I paused and thought about the boy. I tried to remember as much as I could and told the police officer.

“Well, he was the same height as me at 5’7. His hair was brown and very tidy with small bangs that are swept to the right side of his forehead. He wore a red jacket with black cargo pants,” I told the officer everything I knew.

The police officer had no struggle writing all of that down even though I spoke very fast.

“I think I’ve got everything. But did you get his name?” the officer asked.

I paused and thought long and hard about that. I wasn’t sure if I saw his name or if he didn’t tell me at all. I didn’t want to let the officer down. But I didn’t know his name.

“I’m sorry but I don’t…” I said before I was interrupted by another boy.

“His name is Alex,” the boy said.

I turned around to see a boy the same size as me. With an emo cut but shorter bangs than the usual. His hair was a dark brown and was kept quiet neatly. He wore a black long sleeved shirt and cargo shorts.

“Who are you?” the officer asked.

“Me? I’m Dakota. Alex is a rouge child who is the child of Team Rocket executive Archer,” he explained.

The police officer scrambled to write all of that down because of Dakota’s unexpected entrance.

“I think that’s all I need. That you all for your help,” the police officer told the three of us before departing.

Dakota stood in the doorway before walking up to the Professor and me.

“How do you know so much about the thief?” I asked Dakota.

“We used to work together when I used to work for Team Rocket,” Dakota explained.

“You were apart of Team Rocket?!” I questioned him.

“Yeah, I’m not proud of it. But my parents were Team Rocket grunts,” he explained.

The Professor couldn’t look at Dakota normally anymore. But I knew were he was coming from since I was a former member of Team Magma. I had totally forgotten about that until I thought about it just then. What if my father, Maxie, sends a group of Team Magma members after me? But that wasn’t as important right now as returning the stolen Pokemon to Professor Elm.

“Professor, what should I do about this?” I asked the Professor.

“Well, since the police are looking for the Pokemon. You can continue your dream of being a Pokemon trainer,” Professor Elm explained.

“Great, but I really want to help out with this,” I replied.

“Then do what you can Kyle. I won’t keep you so good luck,” Professor Elm told me.

“Thank you Professor,” I replied.

I stepped outside the lab and started walking towards Route 29 once again. Then all of a sudden, Dakota popped up behind me.

“Kyle is it?” Dakota asked.

“Yeah, what’s up?” I replied.

“Since you’re trying to find that stolen Pokemon, why don’t we travel together,” Dakota suggested.

I didn’t even have to think about it. It would make finding Alex that much easier.

“Sounds good Dakota. Our first stop however is Violet City for my first Gym Battle,” I explained.

“Alright, off we go,” Dakota said as he walked forward.

With others traveling with me, it would make things better and less lonely. Plus, I can’t take down the son of a Team Rocket executive by myself. So this could make finding Alex a simpler task.

But I wasted so much time thinking about all of that, Dakota got far ahead.

“Dakota, wait up!” I called to him as I chased after him.

Chapter 2 - Cherrygrove City

“So you’re a former member of Team Magma?” Dakota said as the two of us walked through Route 29.

“Yep, I ran away a week ago and stowed away on a ship that brought me here,” I explained.

“Wow, I’m from Kanto so it wasn’t as big of a trip as you,” he said.

“For sure, by the way, what are your plans other than finding Alex?” I asked Dakota.

“I want to be a Pokemon trainer like you,” he explained.

“Oh, so what Pokemon do you have?” I asked.

“I’ll show you,” Dakota replied as he pulled out a Pokeball.

Dakota threw his Pokeball in the air. The ball opened and a red silhouette of a lizard with fire on its tail appeared in front of me. The red disappeared, revealing a Charmander.

“Wow a Charmander!” I exclaimed.

“Yep, I got him as an egg from the egg farm at my old Team Rocket base,” Dakota explained.

The long walk from New Bark Town to Cherrygrove City wasn’t much of a challenge. It took us an hour to reach Cherrygrove City which was very rewarding. The two of us had one place in kind were we wanted to go, the Pokemon Centre.

“Do you know where the Pokemon Center is?” I asked Dakota.

“There it is,” Dakota replied pointing to the red topped building near the entrance of the city.

The two of us walked to the building and went inside. Once inside, Dakota and I gave our Pokeballs to Nurse Joy. I turned around to from the counter to see Trenton and Zoë sitting at a near by table. Dakota and I sat down at the same table across from them.

“Hey you two,” I said while looking at Zoë and ignoring Trenton.

“Kyle, what happened at the lab? We saw you run back,” Trenton asked.

“Someone broke in and stole Professor Elm’s last Pokemon,” I explained.

Zoë was shocked to hear this. Trenton just shook his head. I looked down at my backpack to see that Torchic messed it up again. Dakota looked around with an awkward face.

“Anyway, I’m Dakota,” Dakota said breaking the silence.

“Nice to meet you Dakota,” Zoë replied as she shook his hand.

Trenton did the same and shook his hand. Trenton seemed interested in the subject about the stolen Pokemon, so he of coursed questions.
“So, you two are trying to find him?” Trenton asked.

“Yeah, but at the same time, we’re going to challenge the gyms and try to inter the Silver Conference,” Dakota explained.

“Silver Conference?” Zoë and I asked.

“It’s the equivalent to the Indigo Plateau in Kanto,” Trenton explained.

“Oh, thanks Trenton,” Zoë said as she snuggled up to her boyfriend.

I found that sight upsetting. But I didn’t know her that well so I didn’t let it bother me, that much.

Nurse Joy approached the table and gave us all our Pokeballs.

“Thank you,” we all said thanking her for her kindness.

I peered down at Zoë and Trenton’s Pokeballs. I was curious to what Pokemon they had in them.

“Hey, what do you say we have a battle?” I asked Trenton.

Trenton looked up from his Pokeball.

“A battle, sure why not,” Trenton replied.

We didn’t say another word to each other. We stood up and went to the battle field in the Pokemon Centre.

Once at the arena, Trenton and I stood on each side of the field while Dakota stood in the referee box.

“The battle between Kyle and Trenton will now begin. Each trainer will use one Pokemon and the last Pokemon standing is the winner,” Dakota explained.

“Go Trenton!” Zoë exclaimed as she sat on a bench on Trenton’s side of the field but off to the side.

“Torchic, help me out buddy,” I called as I tossed out Torchic’s Pokeball.

“Cyndaquil, go,” Trenton exclaimed as he threw out his Pokeball.

Both balls flew in the air and popped open. One released my Torchic and Trenton’s released a fire mouse Pokemon.

“Cyndaquil!” Trenton’s Cyndaquil exclaimed as he shot fire from his back.

“Begin!” Dakota commanded to Trenton and I.

“Cyndaquil use Flame Wheel,” Trenton called.

“Torchic, Fire Spin!” I exclaimed.

Cyndaquil rolled into a ball and then circled himself in flames before charging at Torchic. Before Cyndaquil could attack however, Torchic released a spiral of flames at Cyndaquil’s ball of fire. Torchic’s attack struck Cyndaquil which fed the fire even more. Cyndaquil connected with Torchic, knocking Torchic backward.

‘What the…” I said as I was shocked at Trenton’s skills.

He just began a trainer today and is already propelling attacks back at me like a pro. I couldn’t let that stuff bother me. I had to win this battle to impress Zoë.

“Torchic use Quick Attack,” I called.

Torchic pushed off and ran quickly towards Cyndaquil.

“Smokescreen now Cyndaquil,” Trenton commanded.

Cyndaquil jumped up and started releasing black smoke from his back. The smoke surrounded the field making it challenging to see.

“Try to find him Torchic!” I told my tiny Pokemon.

Trenton and I nor Dakota and Zoë could see. I had to figure out what to with the field covered in smoke. Then it hit me.

“Torchic, spin and use Fire Spin,” I exclaimed.

Torchic jumped out of the smoke and started a nose dive into the field. He rapidly spun and then started firing the spiralling flame towards the ground. The flames impact made the smoke clear.

“What…?” Trenton said in shock.

“Torchic, peck let’s go!” I called.

Torchic’s beak grew larger than normal and he jumped at Cyndaquil.

“Cyndaquil use Swift!” Trenton commanded.

Cyndaquil started shooting stars at Torchic, trying to stop him in his tracks. But Torchic was a swift dodger when it came to attacks like that. Torchic would spin to dodge, jump, duck, you name it and he did it. Torchic reached Cyndaquil and struck him with his giant beak.

“Okay Cyndaquil, you can still do this,” Zoë explained.

You’re going down Trenton! I thought angrily.

“Torchic use Quick Attack,” I called.

“Follow suit Cyndaquil,” Trenton replied.

Both Pokemon ran extremely fast at each other determined to take each other out. They grew closer and closer to each other before they tackled each other causing a cloud of dust which made the victor uncertain.

“Who won?” Dakota asked.

“What’s the outcome?” Zoë said.

Trenton and I stood in shock waiting for the dust to clear.

C’mon, c’mon, c’mon, I thought hoping Torchic was the victor.

The dust finally disappeared, revealing both Pokemon were still standing. Then, both fell to the ground in defeat.

“Both Pokemon are unable to battle, therefore the battle ends in a draw,” Dakota explained.

“What!!!” I exclaimed.

“I can’t believe it,” Trenton said.

“No way,” Zoë said in shock.

Dakota left the referees box and went to my side. I couldn’t believe that we tied. I thought I had him beat, but I guess not.

“That was a good battle,” Dakota explained.

“Not the outcome I was hoping for but I guess your right,” I replied in sorrow.

Zoë returned to Trenton’s side and comforted him on our tie. I wanted to show Zoë I was stronger than Trenton, but it was one battle. She couldn’t think anything worse after one battle.

“Well, we’re off to Violet City,” Trenton told me.

“Oh, well good luck on your journeys. I’m sure we’ll meet up again,” I replied.

“Yep, good luck on yours,” Zoë replied.

With that, Zoë and Trenton left the arena and started towards Violet City. I walked over to Torchic lying motionless on the arena floor. He had never battled that hard in a battle, even at the Team Magma training camp.

“Are you okay Torchic?” I asked him.

Torchic still wasn’t moving, but eventually gave a weak chirp.

“We have to get him to the front desk Kyle,” Dakota explained.

“Good idea,” I replied.

I picked up Torchic and brought him to the front desk at the Pokemon Centre.

“Oh my goodness, what happened to your Pokemon?” Nurse Joy asked me.

“He was badly banged up in a battle,” I replied. “You have to help him.”

“He will be our first priority,” Nurse Joy said as I handed her Torchic.

Nurse Joy walked into the emergency room. Dakota, Charmander and I sat down at a near by table were I sat terrified that something might be terribly wrong. About an hour later however, Nurse Joy emerged from the emergency room.

“Is Torchic alright?” I asked her nervous for my friends health.

“He’s just fine, you’ll have to stay here for the night however because he’s still not strong enough to leave,” Nurse Joy explained.

“Understood,” Dakota replied.

Dakota and I booked a room for the night and went tot it immediately after booking it. It was 7:30 p.m at the time and dinner would be served in half an hour. We dropped our bags in our room then arrived downstairs.

“Oh my god!” Dakota exclaimed as he made it to the bottom of the stairs.

I followed him quickly and then I saw it. It was Alex and we had to get him.

“Charmander, come out and use Metal Claw,” Dakota commanded in a whisper.

Charmander jumped off of Dakota’s shoulder and prepared his attack. His claws grew larger and began to glow silver. He charged at Alex with all his might and Alex didn’t see it coming, until the last second.

“Totodile use Water Gun,” Alex said as he threw out Totodile’s Pokeball.

Alex’s Pokeball hit the ground and popped open which let Totodile emerge from it. Totodile quickly jumped Charmander and while still in mid air, released a strong jet of water at the fire lizard Pokemon. The attack struck Charmander hard causing him to fly backward into a window which he smashed threw to the outside.

“Charmander…” Dakota said in fear for Charmander’s health.

Instead of healing his Totodile, he stole a Potion from another child and ran off towards Violet City.

“Dakota, go check on Charmander. I’ll follow Alex,” I replied as I ran after Alex.

Dakota ran outside to check on his Charmander. When he reached outside, he saw that his Charmander had small shards of broken glass stuck in his skin.

“Nurse Joy, I need your help. My Charmander is badly hurt,” Dakota explained to Nurse Joy.

“We’ll take care of him,” Nurse Joy replied as she took Charmander in her arms and ran back inside the Pokemon Centre.

Meanwhile, I ran through Route 30 giving chase to Alex. I would never forgive him for what he did, especially stealing a Pokemon from a profound Pokemon Professor.

“You’ll never catch me,” Alex taunted me as we ran full speed through the route.

“Oh yes I will,” I replied as I gain speed and started to gain on him.

Alex was in shock of the burst of adrenaline I had gotten from that one simple taunt. I was a finger tip away when Alex jumped down into a pool of water 15 feet down a cliff.

He was no common sense, I thought as I wasn’t sure what to do.

I decided there was no way I was going to reach him if I climbed down. He was only a short jump away. And I was an abnormally skinny boy which made it easier to jump. So, I dove into the water below in chase of Alex.

I hit the water hard, so hard I was unable to move. So I slowly sank into the water. I started to black out. I couldn’t hold out any longer. It was getting harder and harder to breath. Eventually, I lost feeling in my body and passed out. All I could see was black. The only thought in my head was I’m going to die right here, right now. The last thing I remember was a Pokemon and its trainer diving in the water and swimming in my direction. I didn’t know if they were coming to rescue me or not. But that’s the last thing I remember, before my memory went.

hey blaziken. firstly, that's a good story :) and i see Kyle in love xD

plenty of dialogues, and exciting scenes!

i found a typo '
a boy and a girl who where holding hands' @ chapter one. I believe that's 'were', blazi :)

btw, i've noticed that you've used 'Commanded, exclaimed' waaay too often in battle. Lemme give you a little suggestion. Instead of using 'exclaimed' you put in actions.

“Torchic, spin and use Fire Spin,” I exclaimed

first of all i don't think he should exclaim like that :)

maybe like this will be better

“Torchic, spin and use Fire Spin," A broad grin on my face could be visable miles away as I pointed at the enemy, full of confidence.

i'm not that good so there you go...
“Okay Cyndaquil, you can still do this,” Zoë explained. since the Cyndaquil's hit she should be worried so maybe like this.

“Okay Cyndaquil, you can still do this,” Zoë whimpered as her boyfriend's Pokemon stumbled onto the ground, but she encouraged the Cyndaquil with her sweet, beautiful voice, hoping that her boyfriend would win the battle.

that sounds much better :)

hope that'll help!
