I can't really relate to such a situation. It's because the language commonly used where I live is not English, and the way people talk in similar situations is different.
I know words like gay, hag, and their translations in my native language are used as insults. Not only that but words like hijra and chakka (don't know the exact translation, something like a transgendered person) are used as insults in general and as personal attacks against homosexual people.

If I had encountered a situation like that, I would've probably not cared much. It still bugs me why someone should use the word "gay" and not just call it "lame"

I have another question for everybody. Well, the allies won't be able to answer this question but their thoughts are always appreciated :)

We all say that we didn't choose to be gay/bi/whatever, and this is absolutely true. But if science were to come out with a 'cure' for all minority sexualities and could make you straight, would you be interested? Would you choose to be straight?

Count me in. ^.^ It'll be a blast, I'm sure.

As for why I'm joining, I'm transgender. ^.^
Welcome aboard, Mirby! We look forward to hearing what you have to say! :)

Short question getting a long answer.

A cure? Like, could it make transgendered people the right gender? That would be a dream. Obviously that's not quite what you're asking. I suppose for me it would something like, if I could change how I felt so that inside I feel like what I was born on the outside and in that case..... I don't know. In a lot of ways I feel like I'd be giving up by doing something like that, but I also think it would be really nice to feel 'at home' all the time. I'm not really sure how that would affect my thinking and personality though, since I feel like being transgendered is a bigger part of what makes me me than being gay is for someone who is gay. Like, it would be asking too much of me. So, yeah, now that I've said all that I can see it would probably be too much of a sacrifice and I don't think I'd be interested.

And if we're talking about a different pill or something else that would just make me sexually attracted to 'the opposite sex' I absolutely would not. Right now I feel like I have in some way 'gotten past' the idea of attraction based solely on gender. I can see from several people I know (gay and straight) that they've had some problems because of their sexuality in the sense that it got them into trouble, like when a friend had sex with his ex boyfriend over the weekend even though he would not normally do that. He'd gotten a little high (thanks to no one telling him there was 'special' chocolate at a party) and one thing led to another. That's the kind of thing I don't want to have to deal with. I like feeling like I've got a certain level of control over my sexuality and I feel like I'd loose that if I were gay, bi, or straight. Not that I think anyone who is gay, bi, or straight can't control themselves. I just like being attracted to things besides a person's gender.

And I'd take issue with what you said about 'absolutely true' but there's already a thread for that.

I'm happy the way I am. Bisexuality is not just my sexual orientation but also a part of my personality.
Dealing with all the problems related to LGBT people has taught me a few things; I don't think I would like to be straight now.

Thats something I really wouldnt want to take part in. I'm pretty accepting of that part of myself now. I tried "being straight" when I was in highschool and I didnt like it. Also everyone I know expects certain things of straight people that I just dont want for myself (getting married, having children and raising a family being the major things).
Of course if someone wanted this 'cure' for themselves I wouldnt look down on them for it, but just personally I dont.

Ignoring the fact that it has been tested and proven that this 'cure' is an idea formulated in complete and utter stupidity and ignorance by the minds of bigots, with its results being potentially psychologically harmful and not to mention usually having inhumane methodology, and sought out by confused and uneducated people,

....no, wait, scratch that, don't ignore that point. One has to accept oneself in order to become not only comfortable, but stronger in a sense.

BUT OKAY I'LL PLAY ALONG.

No. I wouldn't.
I'm perfectly comfortable that I'll end up with a dude.

Being homosexual isn't apart of my personality, and being so has made me more accepting of myself and other people, and more intelligent because of the internal struggles I faced.

So, in a way, it's a gift.
God really did make me this way for a reason, and I, instead of freaking out and looking for a 'cure' like it's a disease or something, came to grips with it and became a stronger person because of it.

Besides, I don't think me and a dudette would work out either. Nope.

No. A cure is supposed to relieve someone of an ailment. My sexuality isn't causing serious harm to my health. I honestly can't imagine seeing myself as anything other than being gay. I've tried to be straight in the hopes that I could lead a "normal" life and that actually caused harm to my mental health. I have many insecurities, but I feel comfortable with my sexuality.

Demisexual is a new word for me, though the concept isn't. Gonna have to update my vocabulary.

In other news, the some people in the world are still getting things wrong. At an HIV/AIDS conference India's health minister called homosexuality a 'disease' from the West. Read here or here.

I feel so proud of being an Indian right now.

What's funny is that I didn't know about this until I read the article!

Cool! xD Thanks.

I've been on AVEN a lot for the last..like two years. So I've gotten used to everyone using all kinds of words you rarely see anywhere else. :v So I think I'll be doing a lot of educating just talking about stuff here. XD

“If there’s any possible way to not do it legally, then yes, I would not want to put my name on any of those certificates or papers,” MacEwen told POLITICO. “That’s their life, they can do it, but I don’t feel I should be forced into something that’s against my morals and my God.”
But... It's her JOB. Her Morals and God have NOTHING to do with her Job (unless she was a nun). Just saying...

Here in my state, a bill has passed the Legislature that would allow for LGBT issues to be taught in public schools.

Here is the bill:
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=sb_48&sess=CUR&house=B&author=alquist

Here is a site that supports the bill:
http://www.eqca.org/site/pp.asp?c=kuLRJ9MRKrH&b=6451639

Here is a site that opposed the bill:
http://www.pacificjustice.org/news/new-bill-would-require-lgbt-indoctrination-elementary-age-students

My comments:
I support the idea of this bill, but I oppose this specific bill on a technicality. There is no opt-out provision for parents who do not wish for their students to be exposed to homosexual topics.

Thoughts? Discuss.

It's more important to have this included in education than it is to protect the squeamish feelings of some parents. Sorry parents, but you don't get to shelter your kids from the real world just because you have a problem with gay people.

It's not like 'homosexual topics' is going to include anything other than references to Harvey Milk and other figures. It's really necessary to include queer people in any lengthy discussion of civil rights and social issues in general. The part that keeps out discriminatory language is especially important.
