Well, I think that most Pokemon have a mirror with Greek Gods. Like for example, Arceus could be Zeus because he's the leader and commands other Pokemon. So, just post what Greek God some Pokemon would be and why.
Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled trainers should try to win with their favorites. -Karen

Poseidon - Kyogre, need I really explain?
Apollo - Moltres, flaming fire bird, bright to the eyes, makes nice sounds = perfect match
Iris - Ho-Oh, Iris IS the rainbow god, after all.
Zeus - Rayquaza, it CAN learn thunder moves, it lives in the sky, but Arceus is also good.
Hades - Giratina! Lord of the Distortion world, could be a good ruler of the underworld.

I've been reading too much Percy Jackson......

The layman's grasp of Greek Mythos is pathetic :(

I'll just do the Olympians for now, though.

Zeus -- God of sky, weather (especially rain), thunder
Poseidon -- God of the sea, storms, earthquakes, horses
Hades -- God of the Underworld, dead (NOT death), greed, wealth
Demeter -- Goddess of the harvest, grain, fertility, seasons, marriage, death
Athena -- Goddess of wisdom, foresight, justice, intelligence, adaptability, tactical war
Ares -- God of violent war, mindless rage
Aphrodite -- Goddess of love, beauty, sex, lust, sexuality
Hera -- Goddess of marriage, jealousy, vengeance, chastity, matriarchy
Hephaestus -- God of fire, volcanoes, craftsmanship, the forge
Dionysus -- God of wine, music, parties, freedom, phalli
Hermes -- God of thievery, travel, passage, agility, death

Zeus -- Thundurus
Poseidon -- Kyogre (needs Thunder, Earthquake, and Summon Ixion)
Hades -- Sableye
Demeter -- Sawsbuck
Athena -- Noctowl (obligatory)
Ares -- Emboar (Reckless plz)
Aphrodite -- Luvdisc (because she's so useless)
Hera -- Nidoqueen (with Rivalry plz)
Hephaestus -- Heatran
Dionysus -- Spinda
Hermes -- F.E.A.R. Taillow (Focus Sash, Endeavor, Quick Attack)

Gardevoir jumped to mind immediately, maybe as Aphrodite :)

Also, maybe Ninetales as Athena :)
Gardevoir is a tempting one... Except for the fact that she has none of Aphrodite's qualities. Gardevoir's name itself tells its true motives: guarding and foreseeing. She lives to protect and uses her foresight as a tool--nothing having to do with love or sex or anything.

That's why I didn't pick Gardevoir, at least.

Though, Milotic is a good choice too.

It seems quite a few of the legendaries are based on at least a few gods from different cultures.

As for Greek gods..

Zeus- Thundurus, he just seems like it :o. Zapdos is also a possibility, but not as much.

Hephaestus- Arcanine. Being the god of fire and all, and I have always thought Hephaestus would have that grizzly look.

Aphrodite- Jynx. Yeah yeah, quite ironic, the goddess of love and beauty looking.. Like that? XD. But if you think about it, Jynx's moves sometimes seem to be centered around capturing the opposite genders "heart" and making it fall in love. Could also be Eros, the god of love (Or Cupid.. Take it as you will, they are virtually the same >_>)

Apollo- Moltres would be possible, since it flys (going with the whole "Chariot of the Sun" thing) and it is a fire bird..

Gaea- Groudon. If you cant see the connection.. Well Groudon is a Ground type, and it is said he shaped the land.. I think o.o. Same with Gaea, only SHE is the land...

Poseidon- Kyogre would be an popular choice, for obvious reasons.

Ouranos- Arceus. Yeah yeah, you can say Arceus is like the "Top dog" but it does state he might have possibly created the universe, and the pokemon world at least. Ouranos was thought to be the creator (At least, as far as I know, though I may be wrong) of our world

Hera- Truthfully, no clue. It could be Articuno, but there is nothing that I know of that could tie these two together..

Hades- A plausible choice could be Giratina.. >_>

Hermes- Pidgeot perhaps, going on the fact thats it pretty darn fast and would be a good messenger bird eh?

Also, for the person who stated something about laymans grasp blah blah, does anyone really completely understand Greek mythology? I doubt the Greeks themselves fully understand every aspect of it. Oh well, if I got your meaning wrong.. Bite me~~

Hi! Good analyses overall. Just a few pointers <3
  • Hephaestus is known for being crippled from birth, which doesn't make sense if Arcanine is a fast little bugger. He's also the god of volcanoes and craftsmanship, which is why I picked Heatran (he's the Volcano Pokemon and half Steel-type).
  • I like the idea of Moltres since its Pokedex makes it seem pretty bright... Though, Apollo's icon was the Python, which, being a snake, is an earth-symbol.
  • There is no creator in Greek Mythos. The world spontaneously split open from Kaos into three entities: Ouranos, Gaea, and Eros (sccording to Hesiod).
  • Ouranos is the physical embodiment of the sky (like how Gaea is the embodiment of the earth), which is his proper role as a god.
  • Nidoqueen, the stereotypical mother Pokemon with all the ferocity of Hera.
  • Giratina isn't a good pick for Hades because the Pokedex says that Giratina was banished for its violence. Hades isn't violent... Or even a bad guy. He's just stuck in Tartarus because of bad luck--when the Olympians were drawing roles, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades drew straws and Hades got the smallest one, so he had to rule over the Underworld. Other than that, his only really negative quality is his greed. The Greeks just tended not to like him because he was associated with death.

Good point :D Initially I thought of her as Athena actually, but then I thought of Ninetales and was like ATHENA!! Lol but I think Gardevoir should probably be Athena :) Maybe.... Jynx as Aphrodite? Not sure lol :)

Milotic's a great choice didn't think of that one - there's a great mysticism surrounding it :) I think Gyarados might be cool too... say as Poseidon? And maybe Hydreigon for Hades :)

Arceus would be Chronus, since Chronus was Zeus's father and the creator of the world in Greek mythology.
Hermes would be Sneasel. That somehow "fits" in my mind.
Ares, god of war, is maybe Bisharp or Gyarados.

Those are some good answers, but this thread is over 2 years now- well past the one month revival date. If you'd like to discuss something in the future that there's no active thread for, feel free to make a new one, but please don't bump old threads like this one. Thanks.
