Grave of the Fireflies. That movie was just all.. depressing. No happy beginning, no happy middle, and no happy end. Just.. not a happy movie.

The Grave of the Firefiles :(
Oh.my.gosh. Its sooooooooooooooooo sad :(
What made it sadder for me is that it what happened to those two sibling (I forgot their names I'm sorry) Actually happen in Hiroshima :(

And Fullmetal Alchemist is really sad as well, with Meas Hughe's death is just.....tear jerking

I haven't watched a lot of anime, but for me it's .hack//Roots. The entire second half of the show was just depressing around everything involving the main character.

*hardly watches any anime*
The ending to Fullmetal Alchemist (the 2003 series) was pretty depressing, at least for me. I suppose it was supposed to be symbolizing Equivalent Exchange, but it was still pretty damn sad that the main characters had to leave everything behind. :|
What really got to me were Winry's lines- "I guess this is goodbye forever, Edward."

AnoHana was pretty sad but didn't make me cry. It's because I thought there wasn't really a clear alternation between sad and happy. It was sad, but because there weren't a lot happy moments - at least none happy enough to make the sad ones stand out - the sad moments got a little blah.

Naruto was very sad at times, as well as Bleach, but overall those aren't really sad anime.

Tekkon Kinkreet - allthough a movie and not an anime - made me cry a little, and I don't very often so that says something I guess. The movie Spirited Away also had its intense moments but they weren't necessarily sad, they were just very sensational. And Chobits is definitely sad sometimes, too.

Now and then, here and there

Those are the stuff that will take a stoic, or a rather jaded fellow (yes, that's me) to not well-up, but your mileage will vary.

Gankutsu (monte cristo) was kinda sad but the sadest was Rome's blue skies anime...
She never taught him how to cry only how to sing.
Happy in herself - just as she wished to be -
she taught him endless space and vastness
and she calls him: Open-hearted.
