Hey everyone,
I recently posted in a thread about motivation and how we can motivate the other members of the forum and an idea was floating around about having a newsletter / magazine.

I have heards that the community has had a newsletter or magazine in differed incarnations which were eventually stopped. I was wondering If I could do a monthly magazine for the community?

I always feel that I take too much from the website without giving much back so this would be me giving something back.

Can I have opinions about this idea. Feel free to shoot it down or support it.

I'm pretty sure we had something like this in the hacking sections a few years ago, not sure if it still exists though.

Edit: Found it, http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=149701
There was nothing. Followed by everything. Swirling, burning specks of creation that circled life-giving suns. And then we reached to the light.

I remember doing something like his a while ago with a few friends, it was great fun xD
We had like news about the site, a few comic strips and such from the art forums and then a load of fake but amusing new stories based on the pokemon world xD

Yeah. I was going to go for the approach of including news, hacking concepts but also nice social aspects and fun things that people with little or no hacking expertise can fully enjoy. Like a full magazine that encompasses many different topics which lots of people can enjoy.

I was aiming for a pdf format for easy download for the community. Of course I will have to see how the poll comes out and if the admin give it a thumbs up.

This is an excellent idea, most of us are confined to our "niches" and rarely venture out to see whats going on -- You could have seperate sections for different goings on.

eg - A Hacking section

I do recall a memeber attempting to create a Pokémon news style thing, but he only did a few issues before leaving and that was failry well received so I dont see why not. You could all submit stories and things!

I would love something like this. Maybe you could do like a Pokemon of the Month section, an art section where we can submit art and have it approved, stuff that's happening around the community(events, new emblems, etc.) and other interesting stuff. If this ever did happen I would love to support it and help it take off.
Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled trainers should try to win with their favorites. -Karen

Wait, I'm a little confused. Is this an idea for a newsletter for the whole website, or just for the hacking section? Because if it's for the whole website, I would recruit a few more people, because no one can be active enough in every forum to know what's going on that's important. :P

If you're doing one for the ROM Hacking section then I'd love to say go for it. But being someone who's been in ROM Hacking for nearly three years I'd say don't. There's been about 10 incarnations of the ROM Hacking Newsletter since the original one was so successful (and that's not counting previous version prior to that either). It'll be fun and exciting for the first 1-3 episodes but then it'll get boring and dreary and content will be hard to create and, ultimately, you'll fail. So, my advice to you, is just have fun hacking and not create a ROM Hacking Newsletter. If you're going to do one for the whole forum then I don't know how that's going to do but do it if you want to.

I really can't say it better than he did. The original RHN was super-successful but that's because it was an innovative idea at the time and tons of active hackers (mind you, active, popular people) all pitched in ideas and reviewed and it was really a community activity. The biggest problem with the reincarnations of RHN was that everything was a repeat, everything happened before, and it just fell to the wayside from being something that everyone looked forward to and helped out to just being a side thing that random members tried to do from time to time.

Basically, it's nearly impossible to come up with new, exciting content that will get people inspired to read and help out with it. RHN was successful at one time, but honestly I think trying to do it again and again and again is just kicking a dead horse. You could try, but... I don't know if it'd be successful or even worth your time, in the end.

edit: if you're talking a community, full forum-wide magazine... then good luck with that. :x

While I think it's a good idea, not everyone would be interested in it, since not everyone does ROM Hacking. If the only people who will read it are ROM hackers then I wouldn't see the point, since they should know everything going on there. If there was something just highlighting everything that's new across the entire forums every month, then I'd be up for that. :)

Spoiler:

I see everyone has a different stance on this, which is understandable.

I'll clarify slightly, I was hoping to do a newsletter / magazine that covered the majority of the individual forum sections, to allow for variation within the magazine and to appeal to more people.

I did know that there were a few previous incarnations but I honestly did not realise how popular the previous ones were. I was hoping for a layout which would keep people up to date while also giving people a nice thing to read in down time. I would try to make it less like what has already been done and try to add a nice new twist.

I wouldn't have it clutter up inbox space and I would probably start a new thread for it if I do it.

As Pachy said, I would have to find some place to put it where it would get read.

I understand both the support and scepticism about this and I am going to give it a lot more thought before I make anything certain. Thank you all very much for your opinions and I will take everything into account.

After testing the trial version I am going to put this idea on hold until I have more experience.
