Hey all, I've been trying to upload an avatar with a transparent background, but when I do, it appears with a white, solid background. I've seen people with transparent background avatars, so I know it's possible.

The size is right, and the picture itself does have a transparent background, yet it appears with a solid white one when I upload it. I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out a little!

Thanks in advance!

You have to remove the white background in Photoshop or whichever image manipulation program you use, and then save it as a .png file for the web. The .png file format allows transparency.

how big is the file size?

Also is it an .gif or .png file?

If you're uploading a picture that is bigger than 130 x 130 px or 80KB, it won't work. Even if the general dimensions are fine, you'll need to check the file size too.
It's a PNG file, and it's not too big, the size is right. The problem is that the picture doesn't have a white background, it is already transparent, but when I upload it here, it gets a white background, somehow. I thought I'd maybe have to change the file type to gif, but it said 'invalid file' and I couldn't upload it.

I suggest maybe uploading it to an image hosting site such as Imgur or Tinypic and then using the image link to set it as your avatar.

If you'd like to make the background of your avatar transparent, I reccomend downloading GIMP [a free image manipulation program] and follow these instructions.
It's already transparent.

I'm not talking about the height and width of the avatar, I'm asking how big is the file size e.g. 50kb.

To make it a gif you would have to open it in Photoshop/GIMP and save it as a gif.

Yeah I know I know, the size is 16 kb so it should be fine. But that's not the problem, I'm able to upload it, it just goes from transparent to solid when I do.

They're trying to solve the problem for you because it's not the site, it doesn't happen that way. I've uploaded avatars with transparency myself. Why don't you upload the one you want that's going to a white background, give us step-by-step what you did, and leave it so others can see? :3

Check the colour information/setting in a suitable editor. In some applications (ie. possibly your browser), greyscale images with an alpha channel may show it up as white instead of transparent.

If you can't do that or are still having trouble, send me a private message containing the image and I should be able to fix it for you.

One thing I've found, if you are uploading it to PokeCommunity, I think it saves it as a .jpg, or something, cause I've seen .png tags get the quality ruined simply by uploading it to PC.

If you have a .png with a transparent background, but it isn't maintaining the background upon upload, the problem is obviously the host, and PC doesn't seem to do it right. Upload to *.com, photobucket, imageshack, basically anywhere that is made for uploading images. Tinypic doesn't need registering or an account, so that's a fairly good option.

Avatars' extensions are changed to GIF but their actual filetypes remain unchanged; this is unless the image's dimensions or filesize are above the specified limit (130x130px & 41KB for normal members) while the OP (Yoshikkko) claims hers is not.

I can make a avatar for you.. with the transparent bg and everything, that is, if you want. but what you gotta do:

1: Have photoshop, and create new with a transparent bg. the dimensions are 130x130.
2: If you have a render, cut it out and center it as center as possible. if there are some background from the render, clear it off.
3: Save as a .Png
4: Upload it.

Thanks to all of you who commented and helped me out, I am currently figuring it out with someone and I think it should be fine, if not, I'll just have to fool around with Photoshop and GIMP a little, like you all suggested. I am familiar with both programs so I hope it will be okay.

Thanks a lot for helping me.

Edit: I got it, thanks guys, very happy now! (feel free to close this topic) Thanks for helping!
