Since it is law that every thread in OVP must have a cheesy and (imo) unappealing title, what is your opinion on cheesy thread titles? Do they make you want to look at the thread or confuse you and push you away?

If it makes it hard to see what the thread is about then I click it just to find out, which I guess is playing right into people's hands lol. Some of them are quite clever while others just make me roll my eyes.

I like the titles, tbh. When I make threads with a title that's inventive, I always put the serious topic as the title within the thread first thing so it comes up on the mouseover anyway, so I don't think mine do much harm.

Although I don't like when there's a title that doesn't look like it took much effort. If you're already not putting effort into it, then just make it a non-creative, normal topic.

"that's actually a really good idea" is what you said to me.

Well anyway I listen to an album then make threads based on a line from each song. I enjoy it, so I don't care if anybody else doesn't like it.
> something to get inspiration or ideas for a topic to post in ovp
> the actual topic you come up with and the thread title

two completely different things.

for example; someone's listening to katy perry and decides to make an ovp thread asking if members have ever found themselves in an on/off relationship. this someone proceeds to label the thread 'hot n' cold'. it has absolutely nothing to do with the thread and the point of the title is... what exactly? to let everyone know you are aware of the billboard top forty? to let everyone know how (see; my first post) 'deep and poetic' you are?

either way, nobody cares.

it's like saying 'i'm gonna form a musical band! i really like the arcade fire, they're gonna be one of our leading influences even though we may develop a different musical style! let's call ourselves THE ARCADE FIRE!'

check and mate, vendak. until next time, tally ho!

EDIT: in regards to the anonymous post comment about me thinking vendak 'called me out', you are wrong. i just felt like sorting out what could have left posters confused or even thinking i was a hypocrite (god forbid!).

As long as the title isn't complete misleading I don't care. I'm gonna read the thread anyway because I mod here and I read all the replies.

Also I can't say much because either my thread titles are exactly what I'm asking or really stupid. You see, I suck at titles... so I don't judge people who don't come up with an amazing thread title. That'd be hypocritical. :p

I always hover over it and read the first part about it then, if I want to reply I click on it and read the whole thing. Then, I reply :P

I can't stand them. And if I can't figure out exactly what the question in the thread is when I hover, I won't post in them at all. I used to really like them years and years ago but now I like my thread titles to be very straight-forward so I know exactly what to expect.

It's the OVP equivalent of said bookisms. Novice writers will often worry that their writing looks boring and repetitive if the verb used to indicate speaking is always "said" ("Bob said", "Alice said", "the wizard said", etc.) and overcompensate by swinging wildly in the other direction by substituting about any verb they can find for "said", no matter how awkward, overly-fanciful, etc. ("Bob snarled", "Alice chortled", "the wizard inquired").

I suppose that some people are too wary of a forum full of threads that begin with a "who/what/where/when/why/how" and end with a question mark to allow themselves to create a title that perfunctory and simple, and so we sometimes see titles that are pretty far-removed from describing their actual content. The ultimate purpose of a poll is to ask a question, so no one should hesitate to simply ask that question if they wish. This doesn't mean that you can just type "n/t" for the body of your post, though, as (beyond merely being under the character limit) if it's a question simple enough that you can't elaborate on the purpose of your poll at all, it's probably not right for this forum.

When I modded OVP I was laid-back about this sort of thing. Suppose I still am, though considering that I don't come around OVP regularly it can be slightly disorienting to find an entire page of polls that I have to click on to know if I'm actually interested in responding or not. Though, I'm sure it's less bothersome for OVP regulars who read new threads immediately as they come up on a daily basis. Ultimately, I'm not interested in curtailing the creativity (or perceived creativity) of the people creating polls and, really, the title stops mattering three seconds after you've clicked on a thread, so it's a non-issue for me, even though a thread title that indicates the subject matter is always preferable.

what is your opinion on cheesy thread titles?
Some of them are actually pretty funny. While others are just so boring

Do they make you want to look at the thread or confuse you and push you away?
They make me look at the thread, I look in every thread just to be curious

idk sometimes they imply something, and I hover over the link to see what it's about and I wasn't even close. I don't mind cheesy titles, but I don't like cryptic or irrelevant titles.

The thread title doesn't matter to me. I just look at the subject of the thread. I don't feel like looking so I'm just going to guess that all my thread titles have been pretty bland and boring. I can never think of anything creative so might as well just make it straight forward.
This.
I usually try to make an appealing title any way I can, be it cheesy or straight to the point.

More annoying that the cheesy titles are when the first part of the opening post relates to the title and not the point of the topic. When I can't figure out what a thread is about because of the cheesy title, I'll hover over it for a brief tooltip that hopefully sheds some insight. But, then in these cases the tooltip is just as unhelpful.

So, then I pass over the thread

To be honest, it's the question itself - rather than the title - that puts me off answering stuff in OVP. Cheesy ones are very hit and miss, but I like that people are at least making the effort to be different. Variety is the spice of life, and all that!

These are my thoughts on the matter. I don't really care for posting in threads with misleading titles - they're usually fodder threads, anyway.
