Official Internet Browser Thread

A detailed guide of internet browsers.

Hello, everyone! I'm JS7, a learning graphical artist and CSS user. This is my first "CSS loaded", official thread at PC! This thread will talk you through the basics of internet browsers and which one is the right one for you. Now, let's begin!

What Are Internet Browsers?
Internet browsers are programs on your computer that allow you to visit and browse websites. They allow you to retrieve and send information back and forth on the World Wide Web or commonly called the Internet. So, using an Internet browser, you can send email to other people, play games, download software programs, or just read the news! Each internet browser available has its own unique history and features. I am going to give a description of each major browser. They are Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Windows Internet Explorer, Apple Safari, and Opera.

Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Firefox is one of the most popular internet browsers on the internet. Many people use it for its speed, while others use it for its customization ability. Here is a brief history from Wikipedia:
The Mozilla Firefox project was created by Dave Hyatt and Blake Ross as an experimental branch of the Mozilla project. Firefox 1.0 was released on November 9, 2004. Firefox 1.5 was released on November 29, 2005.Version 2.0 was released on October 24, 2006. Firefox 3.0 was released on June 17, 2008, with Version 3.5 andVersion 3.6 released on June 30, 2009 and January 21, 2010 respectively. Version 4.0 was released on March 22, 2011, Version 5.0 was released on June 21, 2011, and Version 6.0, the current release, was released on August 16, 2011.

So, if you like speed and private browsing, this would be a great browser for you. But hold on! Look at the other browsers before you make a decision!

Google Chrome
Google Chrome is clearly the most popular internet browser on the internet. Known for its speed, it has a "easy-to-access" look. It's window for viewing pages is also big compared to Firefox & IE.
Here is a brief history from Wikipedia:
The browser was first publicly released for Microsoft Windows (XP and later versions only) on September 2, 2008 in 43 languages, officially a beta version. Chrome quickly gained about 1% market share despite being only available for Microsoft Windows at that time. After the initial surge, usage share dropped until it hit a low of 0.69% in October 2008. It then started rising again and by December 2008, Chrome again passed the 1% threshold.

In early January 2009, CNET reported that Google planned to release versions of Chrome for Mac OS X and Linux in the first half of the year. The first official Chrome Mac OS X and Linux developer previews were announced on June 4, 2009 with a blog post saying they were missing many features and were intended for early feedback rather than general use.

In December 2009, Google released beta versions of Chrome for Mac OS X and Linux. Google Chrome 5.0, announced on May 25, 2010, was the first stable release to support all three platforms.
Chrome was one of the twelve browsers offered to European Economic Area users of Microsoft Windows in 2010.

This is a fashionable, speedy browser perfect for the typical power user! But, alas, there are still more browsers to be discovered!

Windows Internet Explorer
Windows Internet Explorer is a internet browser developed by Microsoft. Though not very popular, it is ideal for Windows 7 users. Here is a brief history from Wikipedia:
The following is a history of the Internet Explorer graphical web browser from Microsoft developed over 9 major software versions including 1.0 (1995), 2.0 (1995) 3.0 (1996), 4.0 (1997), 5.0 (1999),6.0 (2001), 7.0 (2006), 8.0 (2009), and 9.0 (2011), which began public beta testing in September 2010. Internet Explorer has supported Microsoft Windows, but some versions also had an Apple Macintosh version.

So, a lot of features, but not the fastest browser. If you're the person that can wait for pages and has a Windows 7 OS, this one might be for you! Now, let's look at some more browsers.

Apple Safari
Apple Safari is a browser developed by Apple. It is not as fast as Firefox or Chrome, but it is great for Apple users! Here's a brief history from Wikipedia:
Until 1997, Apple Macintosh computers were shipped with the Netscape Navigator and Cyberdog web browsers only. Internet Explorer for Mac was later included as the default web browser for Mac OS 8.1 and onwards, as part of a five year agreement between Apple and Microsoft. During that time, Microsoft released three major versions of Internet Explorer for Mac that were bundled with Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9, though Apple continued to include Netscape Navigator as an alternative. Microsoft ultimately released a Mac OS X edition of Internet Explorer for Mac, which was included as the default browser in all Mac OS X releases from Mac OS X DP4 until Mac OS X v10.2.

So, to fit with Apple's OS X, this should be a good browser! It has Mac OS X integration, too. Now, 1 more browser!

Opera
Opera is a browser developed by Opera Software. It is the most popular internet browser in some countries. Here is a brief history from Wikipedia:
The history of the Opera web browser began in 1994 when it was started as a research project at Telenor, the largest Norwegian telecommunications company. In 1995, the project branched out into a separate company named Opera Software ASA, with the first publicly available version released in 1996. Since that time, Opera has undergone extensive changes and improvements, such as the relatively recent addition of built-in phishing protection.

The Opera browser was, until version 2.0, called MultiTorg Opera and was not available to the public—although online documents show it at The Third International WWW Conference in 1995. It was known for its multiple document interface (MDI) and 'hotlist' (sidebar), which made browsing several pages at once much easier, as well as being the first browser to completely focus on adhering to the W3C standards.
Features
  • Tab Stacking
  • Mouse Gestures
  • Extensions Catalog
  • Opera Turbo
  • Speed Dial
  • Opera Link
  • Password Manager
  • Opera Unite
  • Zoom Feature
With a special tab stacking feature, this browser is a favorite! I also think the Opera Turbo feature comes in handy!
