There's a thing called music-induced frisson that happens mostly when listening to trance. It gives you goose bumps down your back. Here's the Reddit thread.

At first when I learned about it last night I thought I had it. I think I was just cold, I'm listening to techno music now and I can't feel anything. I'm quite sad because according to the people I was talking with it's amazing and changes the experience. So do any of you guys feel it?

Keoni, trance is a lot different to techno, techno is sort of fast paced beats while trance is a lot more gentle and uses slower tempo, but building of sounds to create sort of sound walls if you will. (not the best explanation, I know, but you get the drift)

I've definitely had this before, but not just to trance, I think if music can stimulate an emotional experience within you, you are bound to have them. For me, The Lion King soundtrack which was such a big part of my childhood and definitely sparks both nostalgia / the mood of parts of the films (like The Stampede) and I nearly always get these chills, and quite big ones too when I listen to a few of the songs from the soundtrack.

That said, I've also had with other music. Basically, when the sounds keep building up one on top of another, one at a time, at a certain point, it hits an aesthetically pleasing chord or sound to you, as an individual and it just like hits home, and you get the shivers.

I love music! :D

...this isn't something everyone experiences? Lol, I get it all the time and yeah it's pretty damn awesome if I'm understanding what it is right. I assumed before now that it wasn't anything different to just really enjoying your music is all.

Although I can't say that only certain genres induce it.

The frisson is definitely not only induced by trance music. It's your personal taste in music, a certain chord progression or melody that that is so great (by your standards) it haunts you, and gives you a frisson down your spine.

It's happened to me tons of times with really great bands like Pink Floyd, The Mars Volta, Led Zeppelin, The Who, to name a few.

Like you didn't see me using Dave for this as obvious xD But yes, that opening belting at the beginning definitely gives me the frisson. But of course, that's just me. It's really just on a personal level for each individual to what can cause it.

Oh, yeah, I get this all the time. I never listen to Trance though so it can't just be that genre that causes it.

It's never really any specific song that causes it, but it always happens at the same moment in a song.

Sounds like a load of poppycock people made up to justify listening to the same four notes over and over again.
I think you, like seemingly more people than I actually thought in this thread have no idea what trance is, and are just associating it with a sort of typical 'techno' sounding track...

Trance is actually very different to techno, and here is one of my favourite, and probably one of the more prominent trance groups out there, Chicane.

Yes it is long, let it play in the background of something and just listen to it. Very relaxing and harmonious, and definitely capable of giving people that shiver down the spine sensation from the sound walls and stuff.

But yeah, I actually got this 'fission' again today listening to Adele properly for the first time. Yes I've heard her songs, but I haven't actually sat there in silence with just the music on and focused on it. As soon as the chorus of "Someone Like You" came in the first time, I had a moment of fission. :D

I think you just need to get absorbed in the music and form an emotional attachment to something which the song plays with causing the feeling.

I think that's what causes a lot of my musical-induced frissons. They definitely come in all varieties of music, and I assumed it was just a simple shiver of the spine until I read this thread. Whenever I get to a part of a song that I really like, or is new and unexpected and performed well, I tend to get a whole boatload of these.

I wouldn't call it shivers, but I do occassionally experience this feeling of the world opening up when a song reaches a climax. It's like... Woosh... and then back to my small closed off world until the next time. I listen to a lot of trance btw @[email protected] I love how it makes my body move :3

I get this all the time, especially in the best parts of songs. I wasn't aware that there was a proper term for it. I haven't gotten music-induced frisson for a few months at least.

As for it being mainly for trance music, I tried listening to trance three or four years ago to see what all the fuss was about and didn't get musical frisson from it (nor did I enjoy listening to it at all).
