Here I would like to dedicate a thread to all the things in the pokemon game franchise that well... don't make a whole lot of sense.

Now for an example, I can not possibly have been the only one to trade my pinsir back and forth in Gen II holding a metal coat hoping it would evolve into the semi-metallic looking fighting beetle, but that is just an example (maybe stupidity).

Any pokemon gaming quirks are open for discussion here. If you think the developers made any mistakes along the way feel free to post it, like, "Why does Oak/Birch/Elm have to ask you if you are a boy or a girl as well as your name, couldn't it just have been a pre-introductory selection to remove some strange dialogue?"

I don't know, just have fun with it everyone, this thread is not for discussing glitches like Missingno keep in mind, I'm looking forward to hearing what you come up with!

I have many wrong things
Why dark is weak to fighting? * How do you fight darkness? (Or in japanese "Evil". How do you fight pure evil?
Why Dark is weak to bug? *Bugs can see through dark and dark shrouds bugs times 1 effective.(And how do bugs fight evil?)
Why water resists steel? *Ok I have no counter argument to that but it still makes no sense*
Why they put an old man in gold/silver standing outside Celadon city's gym and they make him stare rapist like through a window and say "Look at those girls"? *Those girls are teenagers.
Why Steel is weak to fighting? *You can melt steel with fire, and shatter it with an earthquake, but noone can Karate chop steel in half*
Those are only some lol.

I always laughed when Professor Oak had to ask you what his grandson's name was every time you started a new game in R/B/Y/FR/LG. I guess Professor Oak has a slight excuse for age and Alzheimer's though...

EDIT: I forgot to mention when you go in Erika's gym in Celadon, there is the awkward conversation about if you were peeking in with the old man, especially if you're the female character.

Hahaha Oak is a mess, and its good to know the balancing act making all the types even didn't go unnoticed as well lmao. Hitmonlee also is pretty screwed up too I notice, in the anime he grunts his cry as he dukes it out with other pokemon, but he was fantastically drawn without a mouth....

I had thought that cloyster was related to gastly, the black circle thing in the cloyster looks like a gastly.
It didn't help they were right next to each other on the pokedex.

Also... im 70% sure that metapod's original evolution was venamoth. Butterfree has too much in common with venonat (antennas, eyes, hands, colour, mouth)

When I first saw Bouffalant and Alomomola, I though they were Tauros's and Luvdisc's evolutions respectively. Another thing that doesn't make sense is Cubone's mother, does every cubone not have a mother?
maybe they're like salmon. They die instantly after giving birth.
They eat the mother's remains for sustinance until they are big enough to hunt which is when they make use of the mother's skull and bone. :O

lol I laughed when I read your post about how they can be like salmon.
Most of the things I can think of have been covered like the whole bug trumping dark and Bouffalant but I have others like:

why is accelgor a steel type? it looks nothing like steel
how many evolutions will eevee have? (will there be more in the future?)
why is shuckle a bug/rock type. it doesn't look much like a bug more like a worm... (or is a worm technically a bug maybe im just stupid : P)
why can moves like earthquake hit pokemon like ferrothorn and chandelure whole bodies appear floating on the screen. I mean there;s nothing touching the ground so....

Fighting types fight fair, while Dark types resort to fighting dirty (biting, stealing the opponent's item, etc).
It's like a "Justice vs Evil" sort of thing.

Why does dark beat both Ghost and Psychic? I know Psychic needed weakening after Gen I but it just doesn't make sense to me, especially when you consider that in Japanese Psychic is the Light type (I think) and Dark is the Evil type, shouldn't Light defeat Evil? And I don't see how Ghost types should even be effected by the darkness.

I personally always was baffled at the fact that Pidgey could fly my teenage character all over kingdom come, regardless of his tiny size. Also how the player can freely enter the homes of people he/she doesn't know, and not only be free to talk with residents who are not at all concerned there is a trespasser, but also be encouraged to take a "quick rest" in the creepy stranger's homes...

The reception has really been awesome so far everyone, keep it up!

Adding on to this Spearow, Zubat, Dodou, Dodrio (i dont see how), Taillow, Pidove, Starly etc. can use that move. They must be very strong or take a lot of breaks within the journey.

I think Dark beats ghost since their 'dirty fighters' they'll find a way to hurt ghosts, psychics fight using their mind, so a dirty fighter will be difficult to take out without using force (fighting type) thats my opinion anyway.

Also the old woman in a house near snowpoint in D/P/Plt gives you a cleanse tag or a spell tag forgot which, then when you exit and enter immediatly, shes gone... *shudders* >.<

To be fair, though, this is fairly standard in video games, especially RPG's.

In fact, if you consider the Pokemon series as a whole to be in the RPG genre, then a lot of things begin to make sense. For example:

Spoiler:
Logan's Run Rule
RPG characters are young. Very young. The average age seems to be 15, unless the character is a decorated and battle-hardened soldier, in which case he might even be as old as 18. Such teenagers often have skills with multiple weapons and magic, years of experience, and never ever worry about their parents telling them to come home from adventuring before bedtime. By contrast, characters more than twenty-two years old will cheerfully refer to themselves as washed-up old fogies and be eager to make room for the younger generation.

and

Spoiler:
Garrett's Principle
Let's not mince words: you're a thief. You can walk into just about anybody's house like the door wasn't even locked. You just barge right in and start looking for stuff. Anything you can find that's not nailed down is yours to keep. You will often walk into perfect strangers' houses, lift their precious artifacts, and then chat with them like you were old neighbors as you head back out with their family heirlooms under your arm. Unfortunately, this never works in stores.

are just a couple of examples. Check out this website for more:

Another puzzle that has to do with Pokemon specifically is why Magnamite/Magnaton/Magnazone don't have the Levitate ability. I mean, it's not like they don't already have Pokemon who's types cover their weaknesses (Sableye, Spiritomb), or have abilities that cover one or the other weaknesses (Bronzong).

Kinda makes you wonder if she was the Yōkai Froslass was based on

Don't they use the Earth's magnetic field to levitate? It might have something to do with that.

How the hell Bouffalant isn't an evolution of Tauros I have no idea.

In reply to Ingo, well fighting is stong against Steel because, you can dent and bend steel buy punching it and stuff, thats the way I saw it.

As for the old man outside Celadon gym... well doesnt every childs game have hidden innuendos for older audiences?

How is Gyarados part flying? Sure. They didn't want to make him part dragon because it would make gen 1 unbalanced, so just make him all water. I'll probably think of more stuff later on..

Yeah, I know... Can't unsee.

One thing i never got.

Thunder Stone -> Jolteon
Fire Stone -> Flareon
Water Stone -> Vaporeon

...
Why doesn't leafeon evolve with Leafstone. Instead of the supid evolve at place X nonsense.
Leaf Stone -> Leafeon
Speaking of which....
Moon Stone -> Umbreon
Sun Stone -> Espeon

Also, why does a Dusk and Dawn stone even exist? Why not use moon/sun stones. They're underused as it is.

What I never got was sometimes there are hidden items in the trash. Why would you want to keep it? It's in the trash for a reason.

Speaking of which, why do they throw away perfectly good items that still work in the bin? It just doesn't make since.

I was just running around on Victory Road in Fire Red and I met an Arbok. Here's what it did on the first turn:

Wild Arbok used Acid! It's super Effective!

Does anybody else see a problem with that? XD

Also, why is it that you can be tearing up the evil team's base, stop for a moment and run to the pokemon center, then go shopping for a few hours, and even head off and gamble for a while, and when you (finally) get back, nothing has changed. You'd think that if the evil team got a break like that they'd maybe take some defensive measures, like locking the doors or healing their faint pokemon.
What is real? What is truth? Is it something you can touch? Can you see it? Find it? Hold it in your hands? What is true for you is not always the truth for someone else.

Why is Poison only super-effective against Grass? I think it should also be super-effective against Fighting (even the strongest fighter will succumb to poison).

How on earth is Meloetta part Normal-type???? It doesn't make sense!

Darmanitan really should be Fire/Fighting.

Braviary should be Fighting/Flying, since it's based on a war eagle, and learns Superpower.
