Why can't they have items?

How come in many cases strong trainers (gym leaders, E4 members and champions) never give their pokemon items beyond say... A sitrus berry on their signature pokemon?

To fight a champion who's got things like maybe items like leftovers, shell bells, typed move boosting items (like black belt or miracle water), expert belts, life orbs and many other items with effects?

Is it because people would be going mad with their thief TMs? They could simply make it so that items stollen from trainer owned pokemon are returned (they disapear) after a battle. I just thaught it would be a nice twist to a game where it makes them at a closer to equil level of capability that you are. Even an elite four member or champion knows that puting even the simplest of items on a pokemon raises the likelyhood of winning a match!

For example I'l use lucien of the sinnoh elite four since he's one of my favorites.

Mr mine- light clay

alakazam- life orb

bronzong- leftovers

medicham- expert belt

girafarig- twisted spoon

Perhaps not the best of items for serious modern competitive battling but you can see that these items would influence the battle in a prety big way. Mr. mime's screens would last an extra 3 turns, alakazam would be able to sweep easier, medicham can intensify its wide range of coverage punches, girafarig's psychic might hit you for higher damage and bronzong would be come that much closer to being an unstoppable tank.

I do agree with you, it would make the game much enjoyable instead of just creaming everyone there would be a challenge, I also think they should use stat boosts and other items. The game would be more strategic, I can think of many other ways for the game to be strategic, I just can't be bothered making a thread about it xD

It would make the game a lot harder, which could go either way. Either fans would just give up after facing that Life Orb/Yache Berry/Choice Band Garchomp or they would enjoy the toughness of the game, my guess is the former since Pokemon Fans are never happy, game-wise. \;

They give you a handicap in the game, so the chance of winning is bigger, because that's what it's all about in the end. If they're gonna make the npc's unbeatable, then what's the point? I agree in that it would make the game a lot more exciting since it would be harder to beat, but let's not forget that it is a children's game after all, and they can't make it that hard. I already found it hard enough to beat Brock with a Pikachu in Yellow, lol.

Also, I'm fine with them having 4 full restores or w/e, that's already a pain, let alone they'd use choice items or life orbs.

Well It certainly made the battle frontier in emerald an awesome difficultness. I've managed all the silver symbols but I still can't get any more than the battle pike in terms of gold symbols. That place was the most challenging place in the history of pokemon games. Loved how it got tougher as the battles went on. They get to use items aswell.

Aren't people like Cynthia and Shauntal difficult enough? lol I don't want them to have great items like that, at least not first round. That wouldn't be fair, since I can't have a Life Orb at that point in the game (as far as I know). So for second round, sure. But definitely not first. It's still a game aimed at children, so that has to be kept in mind.

That's right, you can only get those kind of items post-game, most of the time, and if elite four members or gym leaders would use them, it wouldn't be fair, but you'd also be able to get them by using thief, right? So in that case you'd be able to get them when you're actually not yet supposed to.

I think that the important trainers (other than Cheren) don't use held items other than Sitrus Berries because if those Pokemon were given the competitive items, then they'd be harder to deal with; just imagine what it would be like if Cynthia had Garchomp hold a Choice Band and proceed to wreck everything in sight with Dragon Rush.

It's fine for the rematches, after you have an opportunity to obtain the same items, but in the first battle it's a bit too much for them to be using high end items when you can't get your hands on them.

I'd rather see them be a challenging by giving their Pokemon better movesets. Giving Pokemon held items like Quick Claw and Focus Sash is part of what makes the Battle Frontier's hax luck so bad, anyhow.
