Okay, so. There is the 3DS, which has already come out, and the WiiU, which will come out soon.

Here are some opinions on them.

The 3DS.

1. Okay first off, the 3D effects are for children 6 and up. We all know some parent with a 4-year-old is going to say "oh my kid is super duper special! They can have a 3DS and play with the 3D effects on!" And then what happens? The kid gets extremely sick, or has a seizure, and will need to go to the hospital. The parent will call nintendo or wherever they bought the 3DS from and complain about it. The results: the 3DS is recalled because of a dumb parent who thought their under-the-proper-age-to-play-videogames kid was "special".
The worst part? the kid's age wont be known until the news report about the recall, and by then it would be too late to reverse the recall.

2. okay, we get it, 3D is amazing. We have 3D movies, televisions, but gaming consoles and videogames? Honestly, what if someone made a game or gaming console based on jersey shore? Kate plus 8? That Kardashian show? Twilight? Justin Beiber? Rebbecca Black? yeah, exactly.
I really guess i'm saying that i'm just tired about all the hype over 3D.

The WiiU.

1. Hey, remember the Virtual Boy? Remember how great it looked in the advertisements? Remember how everyone hated it? That's going to be the WiiU. It's basicly the Virtual Boy's son (Or should i say demon spawn?).
Sure you can play videogames while dad's watching football, or mom's watching her soaps, or big bro is watching MLP, or Little sis is watching her JB DVD but do we really have to make such a big hype over it? What if you were playing a gameboy game on your wii? Can't play that on the WiiU can you? Also, TV serves as a distraction from videogames making them harder to play and easier to die on.

2. "Well what about all the other neat stuff you can do on it?" You know the iPad? "Oh no, nintendo isn't copying apple!" guess what? They are.

3. what about that Mii searching game? and all those other Wii Play tyoe games you can do on it?
Remember the Luigi's Mansion beta? Remember how the gameboy horror was going to be a first person view of the game for the entire game? Well, as it turned out, the Gamecube couldn't handle that and it had to be taken out. a scenario most commonly known as "counting your chickens before they hatch" This already happened with the Virtual Boy and well, i guess nintendo hasn't learned their lesson about that yet.
basicly, the WiiU probably will not be able to handle that and will have to be taken out, resulting in thousands of dissapointed gamers.

Summary: The 3DS will get recalled because of dumb parents and has an overused add-on and the WiiU is a demon spawn of the Virtual Boy, is copying apple, and probably isn't as advanced as we think it will be.

okay, go ahead and share your opinions now. or ,heck, review mine.
go for it!

3DS recall what?
I'd like to point out that there has been no evidence that the 3D effect is harmful to anyone of any age. Nintendo put the age limit as a precaution. I'd also like to say that Nintendo wouldn't recall their system simply because one parent complained. If they were going to do something as expensive and embarrassing as a recall, they would at least find out the age of the kid first. Video games have always had seizure warnings in the manuals and when you start up the game/console, so They pretty much have themselves covered in that department. The situation you're describing is unrealistic and ridiculous.

And WiiU copying Apple? Sorry to tell you, but touchscreen tablets have been around long before the iPad. That's like saying Apple's iPhone was copying the DS because it had a touchscreen :/

I agree that the new consoles are a bit gimmicky, but what isn't nowadays? Just look at Apple's touchscreen iPod Nano. The 3DS is awesome because you can play GCN/PS2 caliber games on a handheld device. The WiiU is good because we finally get a Nintendo system with HD graphics. I highly doubt they'll be completely ditching their motion technology and that they'll make tablet controller the only way to play.

tl;dr
- Your "opinion" about the 3DS is unrealistic and ridiculous
- The WiiU is by no means another Virtual Boy
- Yes the systems are Gimmicky, but it's best to wait until everything plays out (in terms of sales and such) before you jump to conclusions.

I agree that the new consoles are a bit gimmicky, but what isn't nowadays?
The PSVita, which hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet despite being a new handheld console like the 3DS, has no gimmicks that make it new or stand-out-y. What makes it new and stand-out-y is what it improved on from the PSP and added: Higher quality that some consider to rival the PS3, adding the second analog stick and making them actual sticks (not nubs), adding a built-in camera, adding touchscreens, and a few more things like making it a more social device compared to its predecessor.

The only way the PSVita can be made gimmicky is in the games that use these features. The new LittleBigPlanet and Uncharted will have the usage of the back touchpad, Ruin has the ability to make save states and you can load them from either the PS3 version or the Vita version in the exact same spot you saved in, Reality Fighters uses augmented reality for making fighting arenas, and more.

With the same intended launch price as the 3DS ($250), comparing their specs and games (where the Vita has better all-around games IMO, mostly in the RPG and Action sections) makes the Vita a more worthwhile buy than either the 3DS or the WiiU.

On the 3DS: I don't really want to have an opinion on this, because I can't think of many good things. Obviously, there's Devil Survivor Overclocked, and some more good games to be made in the future, but its somewhat disappointing battery life takes away some of its portability, the launch titles just saddened me, and I wouldn't use the 3D effect anyways; it seems useless to me, especially having to adjust my eyes to use it. That alone limits the amount of games I can play in their intended glory. Frankly, I would only get a 3DS once it's been hacked for homebrew fun and playing my GameCube games while on-the-go (if it really DOES have the power behind it that PokéSwimmer mentioned).

The WiiU? While I like that they made a mini-screen on the controller that can definitely add some major differences to games like a menu or equipment screen without having to pause the game, all I can think of is this: "Just... Just no. :\"

I will be moving my account to Songbird over the course of immediately. The signature will stay as is for posterity and reference.

It's far more than that. The Vita is basically designed to do everything an iPhone can except for make calls and texts over the cellphone networks - and it still comes with Skype to allow you to converse with people.

The 3DS on the other hand, has a half-baked web browser and...that's it, along with an atrociously bad user interface that's generally more poorly designed than the original PSP, and makes something that should be so quick like connecting to a public wi-fi hotspot take several times longer than it should.

Sony's learned from their mistakes with the PSP (bad analouge nub, a lack of good quality games until late in the systems' life, slow and cumbersome disc media) and is producing a device that can compete in today's market. Nintendo saw the impact the iPhone had on consumer electronics and plugged their fingers in their ears while screaming LA LA LAAA.
