It appears that The Simpsons has reached a point of no return, as a Fox executive revealed to The Wrap that even if the voice actors agree to take a substantial pay cut, the series will come to an end next year.
While this is certainly terrible news for The Simpsons’ many fans (even if you don’t watch it now, you did at one time – so you’re still a fan), Fox also noted that if no agreement can be made between the studio and its voice cast, The Simpsons will come to an end this year.

In an attempt to save the series from an immediate cancelation, many of the producers have already agreed to take a pay cut, to help trim the budget. Unfortunately, the major sticking point for the studio is the voice actors.
Fox TV has asked each of voice actors to cut their salaries from the current $440,000 per episode down to $250,000 per episode. The voice actors have been given until Friday to decide.
In a sense, Fox TV is asking the actors to take such a drastic put cut in order to be able to produce one final season of the long-running series. According to the studio, The Simpsons is in no way financially viable in its current form, and even the overall 30% decrease in productions costs that the studio is looking for will not save it – though, it will allow them to continue for one more year.
Perhaps everyone is stuck between a rock and a hard place. FOX undoubtedly cannot forget that The Simpsons saved the network from going under 23 years ago, and is trying to make things work the best they can – especially since the series isn’t performing as it once was. As for the actors, they certainly do deserve to be financially rewarded for playing a part in the success of the series.
Of course, all of that now is a moot point. With the actors having to decide whether or not to get paid 30% less next year or not at all, it’s not too difficult to figure out what they’ll decide – if only for the memories.
And with a final season, it does present the perfect opportunity for some amazing things to happen. With so many wonderful writers playing a part in the series over the years, one cannot help but believe that many would like to return to bid The Simpsons farewell.
The Simpsons sure has had a long run and is finally getting it's resting place.

I never really watched this show, lol. I wasn't even allowed to, but that was when I was a kid. I never bothered when I got older. It's sad to see the longest running animated show take its leave, but at the same time, it needed to stop. Probably after the movie, really.

I know why it's going, the new episodes weren't really good.

I loved the 1990's eps better.

I guess that with The Simpsons wrapping up, could this be Family Guy's chance to be the new "dysfunctional family show".

No wonder my brother started watching Family Guy.

Thank god. :/ I love the Simpsons, but it's been going on for faaaaar too long and it's just gotten to a point where it's really not funny anymore. I'm certain I'll be seeing reruns on TV for a long time afterward so I'm really not too concerned. The older episodes are the best ones anyway.

It had a good run, but I think its end has been far overdue.

I... wow. Never seen that source but it wouldn't surprise me if this were true... The Simpsons has been on so long and it's been stale for a good 10 years. :s It would be nice for them to get one last season in, though. So they can build up a proper closure, I guess. And I'd rather they stop now before it passes from crap to irredeemable crap. I hope it's true.

When I saw this title I was like "o___O" irl, because I can't imagine TV without constant new Simpsons episodes pretty much, idek I've gotten used to that. I hope they make another movie to finish up the series though as the last episode or something like that, it'd be an amazing way to end, but sadly that's unlikely lol :(

I can't really speculate how it'll end, maybe they'll all have a birthday on the same day or something and FINALLY age, or something dumb like it all being a story that one character told to their... oh God that is terrible to even think about.

The Simpsons were definitely one of the best shows ever though imo.

Family Guy has been that way for years not. Just not going the route of a dysfunctional family to the extent the Simpsons were.

As for the cancellation I haven't really watched regularly in years much less an episode so it's not too heartbreaking, but when I did watch it was quite enjoyable for the most part.

Now maybe they can replace it with Robot Chicken on Fox Sunday animation line up.

...Omg. This is crazy. I agree with the above comments that episodes haven't been as good within the last few years, but... wow. I thought The Simpsons would be one of those shows that just went on forever or until all the voice actors had died (presuming that they didn't get new voice actorss lol). It's going to be weird not seeing new episodes, but it'll be good to see how they'll finally go out.
Regardless, The Simpsons will be remembered for many, many years after it ends.

Yeah, I've been thinking about how they would end it but I have no idea, really. A lot of people have grown up watching this show and are gonna want to see it end relatively well.

I feel like it'll be something silly but really sentimental and somewhat emotional at the end. :(

It'll probably be an episode that tries to highlight all the main characters and as many minor characters as possible, at least the really longstanding ones. And there will probably be a musical number.

Is it bad that my first reaction to this "Holycrap, it's still going?"

That show has been around nearly as long as I have, and I remember wanting to watch it when I was about three or four years old, and my parents were completely against it, of course. xD; I've watched the occasional episode over the years, and it just seems like something that, even if it was re-runs that I was watching it was just something that's always been there. I guess I had to know that it was still going, since it did release that movie a few years ago, but.. wow. I'm sad for its fans, and it's cast and crew, but it has to end sometime. :/

I grew up watching The Simpsons, so this comes up as quite a shock for me. I'd like to think they'll change their minds. :( The series is quite famous for crying out loud.
There was nothing. Followed by everything. Swirling, burning specks of creation that circled life-giving suns. And then we reached to the light.

In all honesty, even if the show does get cancelled by FOX, I don't think the series will be over. I see another network bidding for the rights to the show (possibly NBC), because even though the show is nearly 25 years old, there's no denying that the franchise still makes a lot of money and has a large audience. Also, many shows have been successful after a move to a new network, with Matt Groening's own Futurama being one of these examples.

If the show is done for good though, I will say that it has been quite a good run, even if I haven't watched it as much the past few years. It probably would have been best to save a Simpsons Movie until the series was over, as it would bring some closure to the series, but hopefully it can go out with a bang and not a fizzle.

Saw it last night on the news, and my reaction was the same as Drew's. "Is it still going?"

The series deserves a last season for all it's been, but their expiration date was long, long past. The movie was a good moment to stop, but money kept them alive, and that same money is likely going to sign off their death. I hope last episode is something worth saving for ewatching it again in the future.

And now, Scooby Doo will quickly return to their throne as longest running animation series in numbre of episodes.

I don't think this is true. FOX was just tossing around the idea of an all-Simpsons channel last week.

EDIT: Oh, this is true. Somewhat. It isn't cancelled yet, but it could be today. Depends on what the voice actors say today. I kind of what the Simpsons to be around for ever. It's a bit of TV history, even if we're on Season 23 now and the last good season was Season 9.

The Simpsons lost its appeal and good jokes long before the movie came out, I'm glad they're finally killing it off but it should have been done a lot earlier in my opinion. Early/middle Simpsons was great, but I accepted the news that the show had effectively died long before now.

Whoa! I saw a news report on this earlier today but I was only half-listening and I figured "oh they'll come to an agreement" but WOW. This is just... wow.

I was never a Simpsons fan either, my parents would never let me watch it as a kid so I never grew the obsession that most other people seemed to. Still, it's incredibly sad to see something that's been such a staple for so long say goodbye. I'll definitely have to watch the last episode, if nothing else.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, guys. It hasn't been cancelled as of yet. Here's a statement from Harry Shearer (one of the voice actors) explaining the whole situation.

Indeed it HAS been picked up for two more seasons. I'm going to change the title to reflect this...

That's awesome, ending after 25 seasons actually would make more sense than only 23, so I hope they don't try to extend it beyond that unless they want to go for 50 seasons lool. Glad either way that there are more episodes to come. :3

It lost its touch long ago.

I'd rather watch Family Guy/American Dad/The Cleveland Show.
My brother has DVD boxsets of The Simpsons, but these days he's more likely watching his Dragon Ball Z or Family Guy DVDs.

And of course, the best Simpsons episodes were from the good old 1990's.

Season 2 through 9 are great, with the golden years ending around Season 7. Seasons 4 and 5 are the absolute best.

And now we're on Season 23, so... they went horribly wrong somewhere

I'm sad that it isn't ending now. :s I've been home and watching reruns of the Simpsons that are on almost 24/7 and they're mostly older ones that I know and love. I compare that to the few episodes I've seen in recent years and the recent stuff is just awful.

I really, really hope they stop at 25. And/or stop shoehorning in "modern" things that aren't funny and have no relevance.

I've been watching select Simpsons episodes online at one of the numerous watching Simpsons online for free sites since September.

What strikes me most about the older episodes is how there was a genuine family dynamic to it. Hell, in Season 1, Marge might have left Homer. There were still laughs, and increasingly so as the series went on, but it was about the nuclear family. I love all the flashback episodes

But now it's all about pop culture references and celebrity cameos and one or two travel episodes a season. Homer now has a general bit intentional spite to him now and Lisa went from braniac to activist.

The show's just changed too much. And it's not what I loved about (and still do, as far as the old episodes are concerned). The old writers aren't there. Really, the only constant are the voice actors.
