We've all done it. We were talking to someone and said something to them, and a few minutes - hours - days - weeks later we think of something better we could have said to them, and just can't help but think how stupid what we actually said to them sounded. I'm not asking if this has happened to you, I know it did! I want specifics!

What was the conversation about? What did you say? And what did you later think of that you could have said?

Oh, yes. I was talking with a girl back in high school. It was a girl I really liked-and would continue to have a crush on for some time after this, and we were talking about general stuff. At one point, the discussion turned to relationships and she asked me if I ever had one. "Haha yes, I've had a few! What about you" I replied. Balderdash. None. I didn't know why I lied, but I wanted to get out of this subject without her noticing. She then proceeded to ask me for details and I messed up.

So even now, I wish I had told the truth, and mostly, the truth in its all. Not just like 'I had none', but 'can we drop this subject please?' as well. That girl found out I was lying and was disappointed in me. Had that not been, we might have even got paired together, now I'll never know.

Most of these instances have been when I was at work and had to hold my tongue because saying what I really thought would lose me my job. I can't help but think later about exactly what I would have liked to say to them.

One example was the time when a slightly tipsy and very dirty old man approached the counter and said to my co-worker "you're a bit of a sexy [censored], aren't ya love?" She didn't hear him because she was serving another customer at the time, so he turned to me and said "I betcha like workin' with her every day, don't ya?"

I responded with "Yes, she's a very nice girl" then sold him his chips and sent him on his way. As he was leaving, he turned back to Jenn who was now without her customer and said "I'd like workin' with ya every day too, love" and left.

I don't regret the way I handled it because it means I still have a job, but later I thought up how I wish I could have done it in my head. What I wish I had done when he had first spoken to her is turn to her and say "Hey Jenn, good news! This man thinks you're pretty! Would you like to go out the back and do things with him? I'll watch the counter." Then when she said no, I would have turned back to him and said "Sorry buddy I tried; she's not interested. Have a good night though!"

One of my pet hates at work is when there is a pretty girl and a dirty old man in the store and he comes up to the counter and says "I bet I know why you like working here!" I always just laugh it off because it makes me really uncomfortable, but now I've thought up the best response ever. The next time somebody says that I'm going to reply, "I'm not sure what my boyfriend would think of that" and just watch the colour drain out of his face.

Pretty much everything I ever said to a certain person in 2009. I got a crush on him only days after I met him which at the time doomed me to be too nervous to speak intelligibly and to not make a fool of myself.

Especially with regards to new people, I have a tendency to sound like a character in a Woody Allen film (mainly the Woody Allen character himself). There'll be instances where I say something and, because of my very, very dry sense of humour, it doesn't quite get the reaction I was hoping for. In those cases, I'll pretty much know straight away that I messed up and instantly try and re-play the event in my head with a MUCH better witticism or conversation piece... but by that point, the person in question will probably have long forgotten that conversation, which is probably for the best.
