This is funny. The reason for this is to stop pizza from being banished from public school cafeterias. It appears that this is the result of good lobbying and political buy-offs.

Pizza is great for you if it's made fresh and without preservatives.. they should stop worrying about technicalities and start taking smart action.

Veggiebreadairy tbqh! As long as there's no pepperoni or any other meat lol. What Kura said though. However I don't see the point in going that far just to keep pizza in public schools. It's tasty, why can't that be all that matters? </3

This is really funny. This does not mean pizza is healthy by any means. If it is prepared in a healthy way it could be though.
I agree, and so can burgers if prepared with fresh ingredients and not cooks in fat-filled oils. They have bread, dairy, veggies, and meat in them. That makes for a balanced meal.

Everybody is a Pizza freak, including the guys over at congress.

A pizza is anything but a vegetable, as even though a chef can make one completely out of a variety if veggies, without the dough, a pizza can't be made. Seeing that the pizza dough is considered a grain, it's theoretically impossible to call any pizza a true vegetable.

Yeah, that oil is what messes everything up. I enjoy pizza without grease. Makes the cheese fall off too often.

So the morons we got in Congress declared that pizza is a vegetable? We got more serious problems in this country and we're focusing on pizza?! I have forever lost whatever little faith I have in our government just now, both Congress and the Senate even though the Senate didn't get involved.

America is screwed. We might as well wait for the Chinese to rule us.

I agree. Their (and consequently our) time and energy is better spent on more pressing matters than debating pizza.

How long before "I'm trying to watch my weight, so I'll take a diet coke and a pizza" become a common phrase?

Edited out because I misread the article.

And pizza is probably used in meals because it's cheap, so making it healthy would certainly be more expensive and defeat part of the purpose of it being there. :x

Absolutely outrageous.

Most cafeteria pizza is just cheese, or maybe pepperoni. Where the heck do vegetables come into play here? I thought it was bad enough that most schools count french fries as being vegetables because they're potatoes. But this is so much worse.

You need fresh vegetables. You need salads.

The sauce is made of tomato, which is a fruit. So, what the hell?

To be fair, I'm sure they're aware that pizza isn't an actual vegetable. I guess they're arguing that pizza can be served in a way that fulfills the vegetable food group. I also think the feds still count tomatoes as a vegetable.

It's still pretty silly. Apparently this is the result of lobbying by the Coca-Cola company, who is involved in the school food business.

Your tax dollars at work.

And even though pizza can be healthy, how many schools do you think will actually serve healthy pizza?

Yeah, french fries are made from potatoes which are vegetables, but they're just a big starch without much nutrition. Ketchup is made with tomatoes (if you're lucky) but it's mostly salt and sugar. Not what you need to stay healthy at all.

Probably no different than what most kids are being fed at home anyway. If parents want their kids to be healthy, packed lunch is the way. It's not like school meals being crap is something new.
That there is another problem these days. If you got both parents who still have jobs, working long hours just to make ends meet and don't have the time to actually cook food that is good and healthy, the unhealthy foods that you just throw in the microwave is pretty much what the kids call dinner.

I agree, it's too much of a balancing act at school. They do offer good choices I'm sure, but when you give your kid 5 bucks and tell them to buy a lunch, and they can choose between pizza and a salad? You're dumb if you assume that the kid will pick the salad, except in rare cases. But at the same time they don't want to give the kids no choice in what to eat or have them really unhappy with what they're eating, while at the same time balancing the demands of the parents who are unhappy with how unhealthy some of the options are.

Kids aren't going to choose healthy, and schools aren't going to want to force healthy on them. Parents have to do it.

As much as it's ultimately a parent's responsibility to make sure their kids eat healthily, a school still needs to serve as a support for those days when a kid can't get a packed lunch or whatever. That's why they need to be healthy regardless. Unhealthy food should not be an option at schools. Healthy food should be the default and people who want unhealthy food should have to make the extra effort to get it.

What I want to know is why they're so eager to have pizza on the lunch menus. What good does it really go anyone?

Regardless this is ridiculous. Although I'm pretty sure the article said that the spread is the vegetable, not the pizza? Which would be amusing since tomatoes are fruits lmao.

You can cook a healthy meal very quickly if you just look up online or in a recipe book how to do it. The only problem is, most people (parent or not) don't.

Yes they really should, but a lot of things should happen but won't. Once again money is more important, money is always more important. As freakylocz said, the only reason this has happened is because congress was bought out by the businesses a long time ago.
