Modifications to school lunch programs might be blocked. If Congressional votes take effect, these changes could possibly be dead on arrival. School lunches are presently governed by the United States Department of Agriculture. However, regulations allow for French fries and pizza to be counted as veggies.
Congressional legislation has supremacy over regulations.

The tomato sauce itself is considered to contain enough vegetables to justify keeping pizza. The point is that because that has a vegetable in it, it can still be served. We all know pizza itself is not a vegetable. I'm actually a little confused as to why you feel the need to tell people that you can't grow a pizza though. Do you really believe people don't know that?
*thinks*

I can't think of vegetables that would be in the pizza sauce. Salt, pepper, some herbs, and tomato - which is a fruit.

In a world where everyone and their uncle thinks they know everything to know about the human diet it's terrifying that the government is trying to ban foods from their school lunches.

That is to say, I question how much any of these people even know about diets. Furthermore I certainly wouldn't want /my/ kids following the diet of some stranger from the government.

Just clarifying, they didn't declare pizza a vegetable. They stopped a change in policy in how they counted tomato paste in nutritional statistics at school. Given its involvement with pizza, the change could have stopped a number of less healthy pizzas (maybe even all) from being sold. Congress stopped this change from happening.

I think they just mean that pizza, in most cases, does provide some servings, or portion of a serving of vegetables.

A serving is very small, a can of tomato juice is like 3 servings apparantly, so even cheese/meat pizzas with tomato sauce and herbs are still looked at as containing vegetable.

And whether tomato is a fruit or not doesnt really matter, it provides fibre and nutrients, it's all good.

How do they decide what is fruit though? I heard it was if it has seeds, but that seems unlikely, as then soooo many vegetables would be fruits...pumpkin, cucumber, peppers, etc
