Reporting

The report button is that beautiful little button that connects you directly to the moderator of a section, letting you stealthily point out the rule-breaking of other members without making yourself known. Let's talk about how/why/when you report!
  • How often do you report in your favorite section? In other sections?
  • How much effort do you put into reports? Does it depend on how obvious the rule is that they broke, how much time you have, how lazy you are, or something else?
  • Do you ever check back after you report to see if your report is done?

Feel free to break away from the list though and just talk in general about your opinions on reporting, if it's effective, if you often get ignored, etc. :)

I report sometimes. The most of the time when I report are just spam posts or threads that belong in the question thread. The content of my report is usually just two words because most of my reports are pretty obvious anyway like 'Question thread thingy' or 'Spamamamam'. I like to check back to see it the thread or post has had something done to it. I usually feel stupid when nothing has been done after a while because that means I was wrong xD

I hardly leave OVP so I hardly find rule-breaking posts to report. If I find something, I might report it, I might not Sometimes I check the open reports in the ModCP to see if it's already been reported -- no need to do it if someone's beaten me to the punch. As for what I say, I'm usually just short and to the point. If it were a duplicate thread, I'd likely link to the other one, because I like it when members do that for me. It's really handy.

Back in the day when I stalked New Posts and other sections a lot more than I do now, I reported ALL THE THINGS. Reporting was like one of my favorite activities. And then they promoted me to s-mod so I couldn't do it anymore. </3! Sometimes I miss going overboard with it, but these days, I just don't go around enough to find stuff to report in the first place.

I report whenever I see something, but I don't usually go out of my way to find things to report. It doesn't really bother me if I think someone else would have already reported it, I always do it again just in case and I'm too lazy to check modCP beforehand to make sure it hasn't lol.

I try to make reports good. If the rule they broke was very obvious, I just write a quick few words because I don't want to insult anyone's intelligence. If it's a duplicate thread, I take more time and include a link to the thread it's duplicating. If it should go in another section, I name the section I believe it belongs in, I don't just write "doesn't belong here" etc.

And yeah, I always check to see whether something has been done with my report so I can see whether or not I was right :P

If I happen to see a post that needs reporting, then I will report it. Thing is, i almost never come across any, lol. xD

When I do report, usually I say something along the lines of why I am reporting it. I have yet to come across a duplicate thread, but if I did, I would link to the existing one. Basically, I wanna be helpful when I do it.

I report a lot mainly because of the OP here. You see, we had this thing going where we wanted to report more than each other and couldn't report the same thing, luckily, PC has/had a lot of rule breakers so it's pretty easy to find things to report just from looking over sections I might be interested in posting in.

I mainly report in CBC (being probably the forum I check the most other than B/W), and everywhere else it just depends whether I see it in New Posts or if I see it from reading through the rest of the sections.

Since I have access to modcp, I never report something if someone else has reported it (I have the reports button on bookmarks so I can click and instantly get there, lol). I generally write detailed reports (at least longer than a few words, other than the "belongs in...") and always use links when appropriate since I figure the mod in question might someday find a link to where something should go to be useful.

Oh yes, and I always check if my reports are done, I check modcp a lot per day just to see if they're done or if someone questions it and I need to comment, and if they're closed, head to the thread, if there's nothing, literally go back pages in closed reports just to see if there's a comment so I know what that mod in particular prefers/would do in the future. But yeah I'll report all sorts of things and I generally have a grasp of what's allowed/what isn't in other sections (except emulation/writing/etc) so I can report in most places.

Also, as for me and how I handle reports, I figure it's worth mentioning that I use the little "Reports: 1" as a way to show me something is wrong in Black and White, and if I can't find it, to actually go see the report in particular and go from there. But yeah I generally do things first without checking reports just cause it's easier that way for me I guess. BUT, sometimes, reports are useful, so they can be a good thing too. :3

@Insomniac: we generally don't tell people who reported their posts since there's not a need and I can't really think of a case when that has occurred.

How often do you report in your favorite section? In other sections?: I frequent multiple sections, but I rarely report anything unless it's annoying to me.

How much effort do you put into reports? Does it depend on how obvious the rule is that they broke, how much time you have, how lazy you are, or something else?:
I don't really put much effort in reports at all; I just point out the rule in the form of a question.

Do you ever check back after you report to see if your report is done?: Not really.

The areas I frequent most (OC, OVP, C&M) are usually free of anything that needs reporting so I haven't been reporting much recently. I don't really report in other places because I'm not always sure what is report-worthy in those areas. On the off chance I do report something outside of my haunts it's usually a thread that looks like a duplicate or just in the wrong area. I don't really need to check the rules of that section to know those should be reported.

And if there need to be an explanation in the report I'll just say something like: "I think we have a thread like this already here" and link to that thread. Nothing special. I do think I reported something not too long ago where I said something to the effect of: "I don't know if this is appropriate to talk about or not but I'm reporting it anyway." I figure that if I'm reporting something that I'm not sure is actually breaking a rule I should say something like "I'm not sure, but..."

For a second, I thought this was about actual grades anyways:

How often do you report in your favorite section?
It depends on if someone makes a thread that is irrelevant to the forum or any other reason this is breaking the rules. My favorite section would have to be either The Pixel Art section or Other Voting Polls

In other sections?
The same as my favorite section

How much effort do you put into reports?
I put a brief reasoning, so it's not much effort

Does it depend on how obvious the rule is that they broke, how much time you have, how lazy you are, or something else?
it only depends on how obvious the rule that they have broke

Do you ever check back after you report to see if your report is done?
Nope because I know it will be done eventually

In my favourite section I'm the ENFORCER!!! so I don't need to report anything. Other sections that I go to (PG/PGC for example) contain a higher-than-average SPAM count so I'll report when there hasn't already been a report sent (as, like Nica, I can see who's reported in pretty much every section). When the error in question is unbelievably obviously, normally I'll just write a few words to the effect of "OMG WTF IS THIS?" If the error is more complicated and/or borderline, I'll write a fair bit more explaining my position on the issue and offering my advice as to what I'd do, but still hopefully allowing some discretion on the part of the moderator concerned. I don't want to feel like I'm telling the mod in question how to do his/her job.

I rarely ever report someone. When I do it's over obvious rule violations that usually involve attacks on others, which I've still only done like 2-3 times if I remember.

I don't have a section I frequent the most but the section I do find myself reporting the most in is Pokemon General, no offence to Toujours but that section is a mess with the amount of rule breaking in it. I swear Pokemon general needs to be one of those sections where threads need staff approval. I don't normally put a lot of effort into my reports, I normally just say what they did wrong and I always check back to see if what I reported gets fixed because it's nice to think that someone actually bothered to read my report.

I used to not care about reporting and leave all the reporting to Nica (lol), but idk, I've become more involved with PC as of late and I feel that if there's a post ruining a thread that I quite like, I'll report it. I'm not going to go out of my way and hunt through threads, but I don't see why the post shouldn't be exterminated if it's breaking the rules or something.

I don't report as often as I used to. Usually it's just for old threads because I don't see too many violations outside of those, and even those have usually been dealt with by staff before I come across it.

Sometimes I try to make my reports funny and witty, sometimes I'm just too lazy. Ditto with checking to see if it was dealt with. Funny thing is, one time I actually had to report my own thread because someone tried to bump it, like six months later.

I've only clicked the report button twice and twice only in my life. Sometimes I'm just too scared to click it because I'm scared that they'd find out lol. :'D
If anyone else is scared of this, don't be. Only the staff can see who reported what and we don't go around telling people "oh Touko reported you!" lol. If you see anything that you think needs reporting, report it! The worst that can happen is that the mod doesn't agree lol.

Isn't this politically incorrect to say?
Because if you want more reports that means more rules breaching ...

Anyways, sure I'll be to sure to report when it's needed.
