...of the side-scrolling variety.

It's arguable what saved and reshaped the industry way back when. It dropped out of favour for a little while, but there seems to be a recent resurgence with a series of classic-inspired titles.

What did you grow up on? What's your favourite? Why do you play them?

Mario? Donkey Kong? Sonic? Rayman? Kirby? ...DuckTales? What floats your boat?

I grew up on Super Mario. I had Super Mario Bros., Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Land. Played them all, loved them all. And Super Mario World is one of my all-time favourite titles.

I never really cared for Donkey Kong Country. I always found it be too frustrating. I'm not fond of the series at all outside of Donkey Kong Land (probably one of the best platformers I've played) and Donkey Kong Country 2.

Sonic, interestingly is a lot slower than I thought. I just played the first two games this summer. They play more like Donkey Kong Country, but are more forgiving. I was expecting super speed like the Advance series by Dimps, but it wasn't. Slower pace, with waiting and precise jumps. I liked it.

I have a softspot for Kirby. I played a lot of Dream Land as child. I don't like most of the games though, so that puts me in a tough spot. I actually don't like the copy ability. Dream Land didn't use it and I think that's why I like it. I do like the other Dream Land titles and 64 but the rest of it? Junk. Except Epic Yarn. Solid platformer, but not a Kirby game.

But, Mario is where's it at for me. I can replay any of those games a million times and not be bored of it. Except for Super Mario Land 2. That was a weird game.

I think I like the genre because of it's simplicity. It's what games are about, or were about. Fun. It's just solid game design. You goal is simple - get from point A to point B and probably save something/someone in the end. There's a wide variety of enemies and worlds. It's often just the right-amount of challenge too. It's what's good about gaming, stripped down to its bare essentials.

I've always preferred platforming games hybridized with another genre(action, puzzle, exploration, etc.), but pure platforming is still good. The original Rayman was always my favorite sidescroller. Mario is cool and all, but Rayman just has much more charm and creativity in my opinion. I have to take Kirby games sparingly and I can't play through Donkey Kong again despite actually liking it.

The only sidescroller games I never liked were Sonic games. I just can't stand them.

I played a lot of Kirby and Aladdin as a kid, well actually I just played the same two games over and over again. I don't really have a favourite but I guess it would be either a Megaman game or Metal Slug. I guess like Megaman for the challenge and Metal Slug for the pick them up and just cause carnage games.

Genesis or SuperNES Aladdin?

I had the SuperNES one. Capcom made some pretty darn good Disney platformers back in the day

I definitely had some variant of a side-scrolling Mario platformer for the Game Boy (not the Game Boy Advance; not the Game Boy Colour; the GAME BOY! That's how old I am.) but, for the life of me, I can't remember which one it was. I can remember getting through the first two levels relatively easily but then dying multiple times in the third. I guess that put me off side-scrolling platformers for a while.

The only thing I can think of that comes close is the Paper Mario franchise, although that's a hybrid at the very least and a full-on RPG at the most. It's the closest thing to a side-scrolling platformer that I've played in years though.

WAITWAITWAIT! No it's not. This is. And I heartily encourage anyone who likes SSPs and/or literature to check it out.

Sounds like you played Super Mario Land. It is a very primitive game and probably not the best example of the genre :x

(You're not old, I still have my Super Mario Land cartridge. So... I don't wanna be old)
