Do you ever say certain things without thinking that cause you to just say "OK, I need to shut up now."? For example, do certain things you say cause awkward situations for how they may be interpreted, or do you unintentionally offend someone?

For me, as far as the awkward situations, oh yes. I say certain things that if people walk in the room and hear it without hearing the rest of the conversation, they could hear something entirely different. I won't make any specific references due to the risk of rule-breaking for inappropriate content, but they do make for awkward situations.

As far as the offending side, I always do everything I can not to offend someone I'm around. Sometimes I slip up, but not often.

In the past I have done that a lot. I still do that now, especially online when my friends are arguing; I would jump in and randomly say something I find hilariously funny to me, but they wouldn't and I realize after that what I said wasn't so good nor funny and I go into silence. I've also said something before that would offend someone because I didn't think about it first :S

I do that a lot. I say something that might offend someone without really realizing and then I'm like "oshi did i just say that" and I end up feeling terrible for it.

I'm usually careful enough with what I say, because I don't want to end up in situations like that.

When I do slip and realize that I possibly offended someone, I usually pause for a moment and then either fix it somehow, or crack some type of stupid joke. They usually catch on to that, and I have yet to get any glares. xD;

For the most part, I'm quite good at keeping my foot out of my mouth. However, if I'm engaging in rapid-fire conversation with someone (which, admittedly, is a rarity), the chance for a foot-in-mouth incident to occur increases exponentially. If I'm talking quick, it normally means I'm thinking less... and I used to do so all the time. Now that I'm older, I've slowed down my speech quite a lot, so f-i-m is very rare.

I do this quite a bit. I have a tendency to get carried away in conversations, and my mind goes on autopilot. When this happens, my filter evaporates and I just say the first thing that comes to my mind with little or no forethought. Every time I do it, I just get this sick feeling like "oh god what have I done?"

The most recent example I can think of was a few months ago when I made a stupid, inappropriate and incredibly unfunny Nazi joke around a Polish person who did not find it funny either. It just popped into my head randomly in the context of the conversation and then I said it and was like "ohhhhh GOD what the hell did I just say?"

I must have apologised like 1574 times.

Every day I wake up and imagine just how many ways I can make conversations turn out completely different from how they would have turned out.

It makes me taste my feet a lot, in context.
