So you don't really feel like doing something (could be homework, housework, anything really). But you have to get it done soon. So what do you do to motivate yourself?

Usually I have to break up bigger tasks into pieces. Dishes, for example, I'll do a few, slack off on the computer, do a few more... I can't just do it all at once. :( A lot of things I'll do bits at a time. I guess the computer time is a weird sort of reward, despite the fact that I'm almost always on the computer in the first place.

How about you?

Pressure usually motivates me, so if there's something I really don't wanna do, I wait until there's like half an hour before it has to be done and then I rush so hard that I don't have time to think about how much I cannot be bothered to do it haha. It gives me great results at work, nobody ever knows the difference!

I need a distraction. When writing an essay I need to be talking to people or doing something or I just won't get the essay done at all. As for chores my motivation is my pissed off parents xD And basically after I finished High School the fact that I was still living with my parents motivated me to do housework. I'm living their for free atm so I have absolutely no reason to complain about housework (infact I should be doing more).

Oh my god, this, so totally this. Especially with homework. xDD Like, I could have a ten page paper that is due in three weeks. I will wait until two days before it is due, and like, RUSH RUSH RUSH my way through the paper. And still manage to get an A or B on it. >____> My parents used to get mad at me for procrastinating so badly, until they realized I got straight A's that way. :P

Other than homework, though, when it is less important stuff, I just tend to be like "Meh, I don't wanna do that...but I suppose I should...plus, it'll make doing what i wanna do more enjoyable...geh, I suppose I should go do it..." And then I do. :P

I used to be so pro active with my homework all the way until my second year at university when I began living with a room mate. I would complete pretty much all of my homework tasks on the day I had them given to me. I was such a model student back then, though I didn't have a social life which hasn't really changed over the years LOL.

But yeah, my room mate's habit of procrastination caught me and like Shining Raichu, pressure became a damn good motivating factor, often finishing assignments mere minutes before the dead line. One of my friends submitted a course work seconds before the dead line looool. He intended to submit it like half a minute before but the computer lagged and he only just got it in on time. Apart from pressure, my motivation for getting academic tasks accomplished would have been my general desire to do well at school and university.

As far as house hold duties are concerned, I am a firm believer of "if you look after your home, it will look after you" and so that is the main motivating factor there. I can usually get most of the house hold tasks done in one fell swoop but occasionally I'll do it in two rounds.

I have two main ways to motivate myself depending on the situation.

If there's a time limit or deadline I wait until the last minute and then let the pressure propel me. If it's something without that kind of pressure (like a self-imposed deadline) then I have to remove myself from anything and everything that'll be a distraction. I have to make space and time for me to do something or else I'll probably not get it done.

Getting myself worked up over something and positive thinking usually helps for a short while, but I can't self-motivate like that very easily. Eventually my inner critic says "You don't really believe this stuff, you know." and I have to resort to my other means.

If I plan to do tedious-but-important stuff early in the morning, then there's a much higher chance I'll actually do it than if I leave it 'til after lunch or something. As the day goes on, my ability to procrastinate reaches new and lofty heights, rendering new tasks almost impossible. If I start work about an hour after I get up, that's just good for everyone involved.

If it's something like a challenge, I remember I mod the forum for it and don't wanna look bad. :( So I get my arse up and work on it. Which is why I finish a team for the Hall of Fame challenge at least once a month. Speaking of that, I have been doing that challenge for almost a year. Motivation!!!

As for boring things like blah homework and stuff, I remember I don't wanna be in school forever lol. However, with harder things like math, I tend to lose all hope and give up on it and there is no motivation for that whatsoever.

pressure, reward. i also find that lists help a huge deal, because it's this amazing feeling of crossing something off, lmao.
