On my phone so I'll make some detailed edits later.

Virginia Tech is on lockdown after another school shooting. As of now, two dead, one of them was a police officer. Suspect still at large in Blacksburg. Second deadly shooting since
2007.

I hadn't read that it turned deadly. I'm really disheartened by this news.

Here's the first news link I found. It doesn't have much more info, just that the suspect was seen heading through a parking lot where the second person was found dead. I really hope it's not a student.

The place I've been reading is the CNN blog where they update. [link]

My friend goes there and I had to text him to see if he was alright. Fortunately he wasn't on campus :3

You know, it doesn't seem like this was actually intended to be a school shooting. I'm wondering if it was just a coincidence that it happened at the school. Like, the cop stopped him in the parking lot, and the guy had drugs or something, shot the cop and ran away, and it just happened to be in that school's parking lot.

That was my first thought, too. It seemed ridiculous that anyone would try to shoot people at that school of all places (and I mean more ridiculous and insane than just wanting to shoot people in the first place).

I just hope it doesn't come out that someone, somewhere knew this shooter was dangerous and didn't stop them.

Several Virginia Tech administrators - including the head of campus police, Wendell Flinchum, and emergency management director Michael Mulhare - were in Washington Thursday at a federal court hearing on the 2007 shooting on the school's campus, U.S. Department of Education officials said, according to CNN's Sally Holland.
Wow, really? That's a...very strange coincidence.

This is terrible. D:

My sister goes to Virginia Tech. I was really worried when I first saw this and showed my mom this thread but apperently my sister called my mom earlier and she's fine and not on campus at this time. Still its horrible that people were killed.
Thats good shes not in danger, then...

And this is a prime reason why we need better gun control laws.
I really doubt that having tighter gun control laws would solve this, as this doesn't stop them from breaking these & still obtaining guns. The only thing these gun control laws do is make it harder for law-abiding citizens to get them, while at the same time, they make it much easier for criminals to do their thing.

It's a no-win situation, here.

Just updating people: a weapon was found near the person dead in the parking lot, that was described as a suspicious-looking person by police. They won't straight out say that the shooter is the second victim, but he said that you can "read between the lines".

It's a no-win either way actually. Saying that the solution to gun crime is to make it easier for people to obtain guns is just like saying that the cure for lung cancer is to smoke more. But my problem is this. If only criminals have guns, then its easier for the police to know who to aim for/who to arrest. If everyone has guns, they won't know, immedietly, who to aim for/arrest.

Edit - I heard something on the news about that too... Well, except they said that the other person was the shooter.

Edit 2
Whenever I think of gun control, I think of this. Really, this movie addresses most/all of the arguments that gun supporters use.

Actually, it's worked for Australia. We have tight gun laws and you don't really hear of shootings often. The most you need to worry about is glassing or knifing or being punched but those sorta things happen in certain suburbs, unlike guns which are somewhat common in America.

Either way, hope all the students are okay. :(

According to the school's website, they haven't caught the guy yet... and everyone is still to remain hidden.

I really hope this stops before anyone else is killed.
I clicked on that link and it looks like the site says that the situation is over...I hope it ended without more deaths that have been mentioned already. ;___;

I saw this thread and immediately, my heart sank. ;___;

Two people was the death toll, the police officer and the person that people are assuming was the shooter himself.

Even so, there is literally a vast amount of ways that a person can kill another, even if they do so with their bare hands - if one way sounds unfeasible, they'll look at another way to kill someone. It's the people themselves that result in murders, not guns by themselves.

Yes, but having the power to easily kill someone with a gun may influence a person, making them more likely to do it... and if there are other people near by, or if they're planning to kill more than one person at a time, it makes it so much easier and faster to do it.
