As you all probably know , to trade pokemon globally you need a WEP security (which I do not have). I (due to my parents) , like many others, am not allowed to change the security as a few years ago a vulnerability was discovered which let skilled people break into your network in less than five minutes, meaning that they could attack your computer, use internet , ect.

Did you know this?
What do you think about this?

It...doesn't exist anymore as long as you get a DSi. o_O

It has never bothered me at all though. There's no reason a hacker would target my specific computer so at home I had WEP, but at school they had a way to get around the WPA security for game systems anyway before I got my 3DS.

And only play Black or White versions.

Let's all drop bucks on new games systems to fix the massive design flaws Nintendo made when designing the DS and how DS games connect to the internet.

It doesn't have to be a 'hacker' or anyone with any prior motive. WEP security has been trivially easy to circumvent for years so that anyone with half a mind to it can gain access to your internet connection to get free wireless internet, let alone for more sinister purposes.

All I'm saying is that it's not an requirement and you don't need it, like the OP said.

In reference to your sarcasm, not really sure the point of being upset over a design flaw that's fixed currently, because it's not like you being upset will make them go back and fix it, and it won't make them fix it in the future since...it's already fixed.

It's a requirement for the majority of Pokémon games on the majority of DS systems, and one that still causes problems for people today as a result of bad design.

I'm not "upset" over anything - simply pointing out that WEP is almost useless standard that's been required for far too long in a lot of people's cases when they've had several chances to fix problems like this before.

I don't know anything about this, all I know is that I am able to connect perfectly fine in both my DSi and 3DS. I had no idea that people can break into your network like that.

WEP and WPA both are security algorithms. They both contains password and they protect your Internet against the hackers.

WEP security: Old and weak algorithm and it can be hacked half an hour unlike WPA. WEP key is 20-48 bit long password. It has only few million possible combinations so that's the reason why it can be hacked in short time.

WPA security: WPA is stronger algorithm than WEP and with TKIP it has 128 bit password. It has over billion possible combinations so it can't be hacked.

But to the topic: Yes, it have bothered me when I haven't had chance to connect my DS to Internet because I have WPA key and I don't want to change it. So I have to use HotSpot to get things working.

That's slightly over-simplifying the problem by only looking at brute-force attacks on the password only, but it gets the point across.

I'd just like to mention that it was commonly accepted that WEP was very insecure and the (currently most secure) method of WPA2 security was introduced in 2004, the same year as the DS came out. The original WPA security could be found on products from 2003. The DS Lite could've come with WPA had they tried, even if it meant only games produced since 2006 would support it.
