Aside from the "tab of the month", what is everyone learning at the moment?
Most recent song I learnt was Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall - Coldplay. I'm not a huge fan of the song, but it's a lot of fun to play; I'd certainly suggest it! Plus its the only song I can think of that puts the D6/9 to good use *coughlearnfromthemU2cough*. Recently I also transposed the bass line of Muse's Hysteria on to 6-string; I know this isn't a hard song to play but it sure is fun when you get it to sound right.

Trying to cement the picking pattern for Dear Prudence - The Beatles in my head.
Hmm, trying to learn Technical Difficulties by Racer X... but I'm having techinical difficulties with it.. (My fingers don't move that fast >.>)

And I learnt some you me at six songs before that. (Gone from incredibly easy it insane difficult, smart move Tom, smart move.)

And before them was I never told you what I did for a living by My chemical Romance. That song was a pain to learn at first. How do you guys practices songs? Do you learn like parts at a time and perfect them or learn it all at once?

Depends on the song. For fingepicked stuff, I usually learn the picking pattern and then the fretting movements. For simple chords or melodies, it's usually a learn-it-all-at-once affair. Then I relearn it a week later when I've inevitably forgotten it. Solos need to be broken down, because it's learning (and not improv) solos is not something I do often.

Thinking about buying a better acoustic....

Personally I learn the whole song straight up/ well play along a few times with the tab int TUX Guitar.
Then I'll go back and look at parts I had difficulty with then practice those till I have them down and keep doing that until the whole songs learnt :P. I don't finger pick much (kinda really bad at it), so don't know how I would learn a finger picked song.

Oh what kind of guitar were you thinking?

I usually break down a song into it's components (Intro, Verse, Chorus, etc.) and learn them separately, then put it all together in the end.

Currently trying to learn Vultures by John Mayer. Love the sound of it and the main lick is amazing.

So Jake you dissect the song and then put it back together like some sort of mad scientist!
Has anyone done tab of the month yet? I'll be changing it this coming weekend and would very much like some cover's and a possible first hall of famer! Or would you guys like a bit more time?

Right now, I'm trying to play "Blood On Your Hands" by Arch Enemy. I have memorized the notes, just got to get the timing right, and only doing the rhythm for the solo segments for now.

Well my USB-XLR cable turned up, but the recording is so damned quiet, there's no point recording. Contacting the seller to see if it's buggy, but otherwise I have nothing to record with. My built-in mics distort when the noise gets too loud.

Besides, I've had a few assignments to work on and haven't been disciplined enough to learn it. I hand in my current one on Wednesday, so let's see if I can learn it after that.

Also, I love DADGAD tuning. :D

Oh my god DADGAD tuning just sounds amazing when it's strummed openly, I love it. Bartender by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds is actually played in this tuning when it's just a solo person playing, it gives it such a full and rich sound it's wonderful. Maybe I'll put a recording of that up at some point when I have my guitar around =P

Drop C is probably one of my favourite tunings since most the songs I like to play are of this tuning. Drop D is what my other electric guitar is tuned to. (Mainly for Vicarious by TOOL.)

But the tuning of my acoustics, wooo they go all over the place, atm its just standard tuning for tab of the month and the classical guitars in like C G E G C c.

It's used a lot by the Civil Wars, one of my favourite duos. Worth a look if you like that spooky acoustic drone from the tuning.

If anyone remembers the main theme from the game Bastion, it's also used for that, despite what all of the tabs say.

haha despite what all the tabs say? How do you know this my good man, have you tabbed it yourself? If so share with us your tab.

Which brings me to a question, has anyone here tabbed out a full song before for themselves? Have you submitted to a tab website? Has it had positive reviews?

Personally I've never tabbed out anything myself. Besides some original riffs and such so I didnt forget them.

This is a rad club! I'd like to join.

Username: Penatrait

Reason for joining: I've been playing guitar for close to seven years. I love playing in a band as lead or rhythm guitarist, and recent complications in the band may result in me trying my hand at bass guitar.

Preferred genre: Rock and Funk.

Also, I know I'm new, but what does everyone think about getting together for a collaboration? I noticed you guys record yourselves playing the Tab of the Week, which I was just gonna go ahead and try, but since we're all into recording we should try to write something together!

Oh, and as for how I learn a new song, I go for the tab always. Sometimes I'll try to figure it out by ear myself, but I'll most likely resort to ultimate-guitar.com. It's fun to see the similarities/differences between what I thought was played and what is actually played.

Welcome! Great to see you think the club is cool!

Well no ones actually decided to record themselves for tab of the month yet, you could be the first!

Tabs is how I go usually since my ear is pretty useless haha. And that site is what this clubs name pays homage to :)

-Important Note-
And I was honestly thinking of perhaps either opening another club for general musicians or opening this up to all instruments so we could get some collabs going because I also thought that'd be a really cool thing! Whats your thoughts? Keep this elitist and open up a general Musician club or open this up to all musicians?
Members what are your thoughts on this??

Well I think it's cool to have a little hub for us guitarists, but there should be an open musicians club as well. And if other people want to be elitists then they can open their own club for drummers or pianists or what have you...

Here's my recording of the tab of the month. It's not phenomenal or anything... I added a backing track to make it a little more listenable. And I think I tweaked the tab a little for ease of playing. Let me know what you think!

Also yay for an excuse to start a soundcloud account. lol :P

for those who are interested, I uploaded just the lead: http://soundcloud.com/marsolaiswhicher/mario-bros-single

Oh cool! You may be the first hall of famer/first person to have their cover put on the front page, though I think you may have played it just a tad to slowly, but hey I can't judge I havent put a cover up yet and I'm very happy and impressed that you have. Thanks!

Also what program do you use for recording/editting?

Yes I'll probably just make a new club for musicians in general and keep this elitist (When I can get someone nice to do a good CSS for me >.>)
Would you considering joining a general music club as well?

Hmm you're right, the song does go pretty fast. I'll work on the speed. As for what I use, my school provided me with Pro Tools 8 LE. But you need hardware to run it which is expensive so I wouldn't recommend it to you haha. Before that I used Ableton Live.

I don't know if you've got a sort of pre-amp though. That helps a lot for recording, if you want to do it quietly but still get distortion. The best is to use a microphone on a real amp. Probably will need the pre-amp for the mic though lol. What do you use?

Yeah for sure! I'd love to get to know the musicians around PC.

Yeah its just a little bit faster then what you played but it doesnt take away from the fantastic effort you put in! Currently you will be the first hall of famer!

Whenever I have tried to record myself failing I have used Audacity and found it's pretty... average. But saying that it is a free program. What program does everyone else used? I would like to find a better one. xD
Also I have this little handheld recorder then which I use to record, it has mics and amp plugs so its pretty handy.. Though I havent really figured it out yet..

Also the discussion topic has been changed.

Thank you! I really appreciate it.

Audacity is actually really good considering it's a free program. You can do everything you need to do when it comes to basic recording, for people like you and me. For the longest time I had this Peavey microphone and it was super quiet and I couldn't believe how little I could get out of it and when I finally got my pre-amp audiobox, I could get a decent signal out of it. I still have yet to record myself playing my acoustic guitar, though. Which leads me to the new topic...

How many guitars do you currently have and how many have you owned all together? What is your favourite guitar you still own?
I have three. My first guitar, when I got started, was Squier Jagmaster. My guitar teacher said it was meant to be a cross between Fender's two guitars "Jaguar" and "Jazzmaster." I've never played a Jaguar but I have played a Jazzmaster and they're pretty neat. Second guitar I bought was an acoustic Takamine, which I haven't played in quite a while now... it's sitting in its case under my bed. Third guitar I bought was a Fender Stratocaster, and I loooove it! Some of my top favourite guitarists (John Frusciante, David Gilmour) a strat-players so I had to buy one.

I may take pictures later but I'm really lazy so don't expect me to lol

I currently own 4 guitars. I listed and took pictures of my two good ones in an earlier post (Ibanez acoustic and Gibson Les Paul), but I also have the first two guitars I owned. One is a piece of crap Lyon by Washburn acoustic guitar. The action is so high on it and the tone is just meh, but for a first guitar I guess it wasn't AWFUL. The other one is a Harmony electric that's pretty much just a cheap strat knock-off. Can't hold tune and is almost unplayable. I had fun when I first started learning =P

Okay I guess I should tell you guys about my fantastic guitars...

Okay my best(still horrible) guitar is aaaa *drum roll*
Yamaha Pacifica.
It's basically just a strat copy but it does have a nice fret board and fairly decent sound when you get down to it though the stock pick ups are pretty.. basicaverage
Moving onto my best(not that horrible) acoustic;
its a Cort AD-850.
It actually has a pretty nice tone for a cheapo guitar but doesnt have the best sustain or bridge, eh its still pretty good for how cheap it was ($300 AU).
Then my other two guitars are:
A Casino Custom Series thing that just a strat copy. pretty bad pick ups and tone pots etc BUT the action and setup is amazing!! (I Love itttt) I just borrowed this from a friend but Im pretty sure hes given it to me now :S
And a Martinez MC-SJ which is really bad. Its a classical guitar with nylon strings etc but its cant hold its tune horrible action etc etc. Kinda hate it tbh...

I'll Take photos of them later xD

@Pen
A real strato? Is it American Made? ifsoextremelyjealous. How much did something like that set you back? and I assumed you are totally in love with it without you having to say it.

(Still so jealous of JakeMusicNotes guitars.. GIMME THE LES PAUL PLEASEEE)

I wanna get in on this conversation too lol
I have 5 electric guitars and 1 acoustic, and a bass.

B.C. Rich Warlock - my first professional guitar, it's got a great sound to it, considering the music I play, but I do need to change out the pickups soon.

Jackson Rhodes (Kinda) - It's a Jackson Rhodes V Shape, but it's a cheaper kind. Still Jackson, but no Floyd Rose tremolo and it has dots instead of that awesome triangle on the fretboard. Still sounds high quality to me considering what I paid for it.

Fernandes Revolver - I like to call this the "Black Cat" because it has a black cat inlay on the 12th fret. This one has a Floyd Rose tremolo too. The clean sounds clear and crisp, to me, and the distortion sounds alright but I wouldn't show it off lol

Gibson Les Paul Custom - Great vintage sound to it. Not entirely sure of the year, but I know it's in 2000 somewhere lol

Finally, my new baby the Deron Miller Parker Nitefly Custom - If you don't know who Deron Miller is, he was guitarist and vocalist for the band CKY and in a new band called World Under Blood. It's a nice sounding guitar both clean and distorted.

Fender Dreadnought - Can't remember the model number, but it's a cheapo one, still a great sound for $200 lol

Fender Precision Bass - I bought this from my friend, I don't play it that much, because I have no amp to play it on. So can't really tell too much about it, but when I do I will.

I'll post some pics later on too, whenever I get the chance.

PMark. You have quite a collections of guitars, I am rather jealous!! How much have you put into those wonders! I want the Les Paul >.> (I have a thing for the shape.)

Also Welcome Zephyr! How long have you been playing the guitar for and how many do you have/what are they! Please tell us!

Also I have some news:
We have a new Tab of the Month today.. Which means that:
PENATRAIT IS THE FIRST HALL OF FAMER!
Congratulations!
This Month I'd really appreciate if more people would post covers though! xD
If you missed Penatraits cover it will be on the first post!
