Going off Harlequins thread, what do you do when a piece of technology breaks or doesn't work how it's suppose to? Do you try and fix it yourself or do you phone someone or take it to a repair shop? If you try and fix it yourself what are some of the first things you do when whatever it is starts to act funny?

I always go with my gut feeling and try to fix it myself.. such as whenever my computer is running slow I always "bang" it to see if it goes faster (don't ask why...) and for things that arent computers (such as TV sets), I always shake them.

I usually start with a minimally invasive diagnostic to find the problem if it's not readily apparent then I check to see if it's still in warranty. If it's still in warranty, then I;ll see about getting the company to fix it. When warranty expires and something goes wrong, If I feel I can fix it without too much trouble or cost I'll give it a go.

My curiosity goes so high I just *have* to fix it myself. I don't phone anyone or take it to anyone...until I break something. lol It's kinda rare that I do call someone to fix it.

I fix my own stuff and have no inhibition to tearing something apart to find the issue. I can't stand paying people to fix things. Like people paying for instruments to be restrung or have the action adjusted. I just learn myself.

Often I get out the manual to try and fix something... but if the answer cannot be found in there - and ringing up the company doesn't solve matters - then I have no shame in taking the computer to a repair shop. As long as the warranty's still valid, of course. I know when technology has me beaten, dammit!

My philosophy: If it's not software, check motherboard. I unplug my computer, ground myself so I don't get shocked, then fiddle with the components to see if anything is loose or damaged. I'm especially good at putting together my own computers, so I know them inside and out.

This rule does not apply to my Nintendo DS. I guess I'll have to pay for that $75 fine for a scratched touch screen. Oh well. The plus is that it comes with a new one-year warranty, so that works.

I try to fix it myself...and unless its something simple like reinstalling drivers etc I'll screw it up more.

And when that happens I go to my computer friends.

As a LAST resort I take it to a locally owned computer shop.

Mr. Aladdin sir! Have a wish or two or three!
Depends.

My main desktop has a hard drive connection glitch frequently or some odd reason. I fix it myself- It's really simple.

My Nintendo 3DS has this creepy glitch to say the least. Randomly, it crashes after 20 seconds when wireless is on, saying "An error has occured. Please press the POWER button and says go to support.nintendo.com for assistance." After the updates on 15th May, I don't think I saw much of them, really. In any case, what was needed to fix it was a simple free-fall from about three feet on a soft surface. It fixes it until it randomly wants to glitch up my 3DS again. I plan on having it checked though, I think the problem might be hardware. I will do that if it glitches up again. But, it didn't in a while, so as long as it's working, meh. But when I sent it to repair, they just mentioned it's a software quirk... Ngh.

I don't touch my other devices, these are the only two I'm familiar with repairing.
