Imagine you know someone who is messing up their own life through alcohol abuse, drug abuse, etc. and imagine that they aren't seeking help themselves. Should you intervene by finding a way to stop them such as contacting the police, a rehab centre, or whatever you'd do in this situation? Or, should you leave them to their own devices, as it is their life and not yours?

Does it matter if you do or don't know the person, and does it matter if there are other people such as partners or children involved?

Discuss. I hope this all makes sense.

If it's serious enough to warrant an intervention, then they've forfeited the right to the "It's my life" argument. It doesn't just effect you. I'd have no problem intervening with some sort of rehab in the case of a family member or freind with a drug or alcohol, etc, addiction.

I wouldn't necessarily call an intervention on anyone, because it's their own damn life. But if it was affecting me or a close friend/family (for example, they beat the crap out of me when high) then I have nothing against intervention - I need you to realize that it's you that's my problem.

Also, if I really loved them, I would try my best to help them through interventions.

Well I agree with Livewire, if they are doing drugs or something they have basicly forfeited their ability to make decisions. Illegal drugs are addictive and obscures your ability to make decisions so thats when its time to intervene.
Watching anime. Lots of it. Vocaloid is love and life as well.
Hit me up if you play BF as well :P

I can't take responsibility for every messed up person I come across. I have to make sure I'm okay first before I can help people or I'm not gonna be much help. That limits how much time I can devote to helping someone, but it's gotta be done and it's gonna be saved for people I care about. Someone who looks like they're in immediate harm is certainly gonna move me to calling 911, but for the most part you can't know what someone's entire situation is like unless you're close to them.

But anyway, yes, I would try to intervene. I don't have many people I consider close to me so I care about them a lot and I'm not gonna see them destroy themselves. In lots of little ways I can see their problems that aren't as bad as drug addiction and I want to help them anyway, but keep my hands off because up to a point it's their own life and I have to respect that.
