Most of my favourite US TV shows have their premieres on non-network TV: Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Louie, Girls, Justified, South Park, Phineas and Ferb (yes, Phineas and Ferb), Veep etc. Indeed, I watch a great deal many more cable-originated series than I do broadcast/network-originated series. While, yes, there are an abundance of channels out there, the relative freedom from governmental regulations - as well as the freedom given by the channels themselves - mean that often better-quality programming is allowed to come to fruition. The networks programming strategies, unfortunately, are still heavily determined by the whims of advertisers and being hemmed in to their own sense of branding (CBS = old people; FOX = 'let's build all of our schedule around American Idol!; ABC = 'let's put saccharine music underneath all of our shows' etc.) that there's less room for experimentation that the best shows on TV have, for the most part. There are of course exceptions to this, but they are increasingly becoming exceptions, as opposed to the rule.

Most of the shows I like to watch are usually on at a specific time so I just record them and skip through all the commercials. I don't have good internet (I have a download limit which means that if I go over that the internet is literally slower than dial-up) so no netflix or youtube for me. Forums are good though.
