The latest big story to hit gaming is the potential of Ouya.

At $99 a console obviously a lot of people have been willing to give this a chance, but I'd be interested to see your opinions. Obviously there are a lot of potential positives such as free games and lots of indie development, but we could also see few games be released for it and it's near useless for people who own powerful tablets.

Anyway have fun with this one. :P

I think it'd be a pretty rad HTPC maybe and emulator box... but that's pretty much all I'd use it for.

At that price though, I'd be willing to try it out.

I am soooo psyched for this. They just recently confirmed that The Binding of Isaac is coming to the Ouya, and I love that developer so hopefully he makes some unique content for it as well. :3

One fact that isn't on the kickstarter page for this that I read about are the developer kits for PS3/360/Wii. Each of them are at least 2,000 dollars (with the 360 rumored to be 10,000), so game developers can't break out past the PC because of the prohibitive cost of even getting started developing for those systems. Ouya will be an indie developer's dream. :3

I was talking to a friend last night and he made a good point in that if it does flop, with a price like that, it's not a huge loss like if you bought a 3DO for $700 back when that was out. lmao Plus even if it flops or not, makes for good collector's piece. Kinda wish we still had the CD-i around just cause it's a piece of history. Bad history, but you know.

Though I am interested! Could bring me the opportunity to get into games I would have otherwise never tried. So who knows? Plus it is nice to see something other than Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. I mean, don't get me wrong, nothing against the three, but the wars are annoying. But that crap's been going on for decades so eh. Wonder if it'll kick any of them out. Probably not. But that's okay, adding to the mix is always fun.

Ouya website

Hardware Spec
  • Tegra 3 quad-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB of internal flash storage
  • HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth LE 4.0
  • One USB 2.0
  • Wireless controller sporting two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button, and 3" touchpad
  • Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich"

... so didn't see Nuke's post on this.

Anyway, I think it is a really cool thing that could help the minor developers and indie's a lot!
I just hope people actually pay attention to it when it comes out.

The only problem with this--which several people have pointed out--is that it doesn't ACTUALLY have any games. I mean, I guess you could probably play apps on it but side from that, there is no confirmation of stand-alone games. They name-drop things like Minecraft but as far as I know they only said they'd "get around to asking Mojang about porting it over once there was enough interest". The issue was skirted around when media outlets asked about games and they have no definite answers on what this console will even be able to do.

It's also supposed to come out in March and they don't even have a prototype controller built, iirc. If they do, it's not even finalized and that sort of thing is IMPORTANT considering they're really pushing the idea of having a controller. (It's a very common Kickstarter tier prize.)

The idea for this is okay but I'm very sceptical of it.

The only reason I am interested in this is because it is hackable. I can have a magical emulation station.

Part of just thinks nothing will happen. Remember that "Phantom" console a few years back? That went nowhere

I'm surprised you didn't beat me to it Fabio, when I was making the thread I was thinking 'why isn't this here already? he would make a much better OP'. :P

The IGN video brought up something I hadn't thought about yet, the amount of hackers online will probably ruin the entire experience.

A lot of people are skeptical and think it will join the rest of the 'vaporware' as well, Triforce. I think this one will at least get to be released, but whether it's a successful release who knows.
