Comics. Graphic novels. The 'funny pages'. Whatever you want to refer to them as, they've certainly been the inspiration for much of popular culture. And, with the release of The Dark Knight Rises this week, what better time to talk about the inspiration for three of the biggest films of the year, as well as multiple TV series and - not forgetting - the books themselves.

So, do you read comics? Did you read comics when you were younger? How much of an interest do you have in them? What about newspaper comic strips (e.g. Dilbert, Peanuts)? Or big, expansive graphic novels (e.g. Watchmen)? Yadda yadda yadda... you get my drift.

Discuss! :D

Yeah, I used to religiously read Garfield if that counts whatsoever :P other than that, I've never really been that interested in comic books. I've been much more of a 'novel' person for most of my life.

I've seen a few graphic novels that have piqued my interest over my time, but I've always stopped short of actually buying them because I find the way they tell stories intimidating and hard to follow. Never mind, though. I'm happy sticking to my books.

My best friend, though, has just recently become a comic book fanatic. It all started when she decided to develop an obsession with Batman, and now she collects the Batman comics from the local comic book store every Sunday without fail. She's also started to branch out into things like Nightwing and Deadpool and she talks endlessly about them so I feel like I've read them, if nothing else!

I am huge Garfield fan. Giant. My sense of humour is his. I read it every day. And I have some of the collected works books; and am constantly adding to the amount of books I own. I also read some Peanuts and have a couple of books on that too. And I subscribe to a series of web comics.

I have some Zelda manga too.

And in preparation for The Dark Knight Rises, I've been reading through a lot of Batman comics. I never really read any before. Tomorrow I'll be finished The Dark Knight Returns and I'll have read all the books I intended to read (something like 40 or so?)

I've only really followed C&H, but that went out of print even before I was born :P

No, I don't like comics for the reason that they're too realistic. Incidentally, that's also the reason I like Anime - you can't really make out wether or not if the characters are American or Asian - it's like a bland mix of international. But then they add their own little touches that make them interesting.

I'm sorry, but that's how that is :c

I also read a lot of Garfield and had some actual physical books, like 8 or 9. I don't know what happened to them.

Once upon a time I had a big collection of superhero comic books, but I gave them all away when I thought it wasn't worth keeping them (read: I was too cool for comic books) and I regretted that not long after. But, funny story, the person I gave them to is now back in my area and has offered to give them back if I want them. I don't follow anything now though, because all these superhero titles are waaaaaayyyy too convoluted to make sense of with their bazillion crossovers and retcons.

A few things I have enjoyed recently:
  • Fables, which is a fairy-tale-characters-in-the-real-modern-world kind of thing and I'm a sucker for that.
  • Watchmen, which was fun and dark.
  • Tom Strong, which is a different take on super heroes, also by Alan Moore.
All of those I'd recommend.

I've only really followed C&H, but that went out of print even before I was born :P
I was gonna ask if you mean Calvin & Hobbes or Cyanide & Happiness, but then I stopped to think for a moment.

I'm big into comics. (I'm a DC) I'm one of those people that got suckered into them thanks to the whole New 52 thing. I mostly read Green Lantern and Teen Titans titles, but there are others I enjoy quite a lot. The current run of Aquaman is a ton of a run and a great deconstruction of the hero. I don't enjoy Marvel comics too much for some reason, I guess I find them kind of boring and just generally unappealing. (though Skottie Young's current run of Oz related titles? Absolutely amazing) I'm still trying to work my way through a lot of the older stuff, but I think anything before 2000 might be the cutoff for me, for the most part. There are some really outstanding stories, but there is something very off putting about the style of art used during that time.

I was actually never into comics as a kid, what with being one of those kids who hated reading in all its forms. I got into manga as I was a little older and finally comics last November. I've also come to realize I'm not much of a Batman fan. There are something like 11 Batman related titles running at the moment and I only enjoy three of them. (Batman and Robin, Batman, and Batwing)

Annnd I also enjoy Dilbert quite a lot, but those aren't comics I follow regularly!

Even though I've never had the means/effort to actually read comics chronologically, I try read whatever I can, particularly the Batman series. I've been meaning to see if I can find copies of the comics online, but again, lack of effort to do so. Plus, I far prefer having a physical copy in my hands, carrying it around everywhere and absorbing the richness of the comics in real life. However, I realize that i just don't have the time or money to go around and hunt for the comics I wanna read, plus I can't even buy them online because I don't even have a credit card, lol.

The Batman universe is really the only one I try to keep up with, but I like reading the Catwoman comics because not only do they have an interesting plot, Selina Kyle gets some fine ass drawings and Batman makes an appearance half the time! I gave up on Superman, I got so sick and tired of his crap after a while. Same for Spiderman. I'll just stick with Batman for now!

I used to read them every Sunday, and Dilbert, for some reason, was my favorite. Probably because I was the only kid in 6th grade that found it amusing. I also used to read a lot of manga, if that counts. Not so much anymore though. Could care less about it now and staring at this collection of Naruto to the right of me is embarrassing lmao.
