Palestinians win upgraded UN status by wide margin

President Mahmoud Abbas: "The international community now stands before the last chance to save the two state solution"

The UN General Assembly has voted to grant the Palestinians non-member observer state status - a move opposed by Israel and the US.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told the assembly the vote was the "last chance to save the two-state solution" with Israel.

Israel's ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor, said the bid "doesn't advance peace - it pushes it backwards".

The assembly voted 138-9 in favour, with 41 nations abstaining.

Hundreds of Palestinians celebrated on the streets of Ramallah, in the West Bank, after the result was announced.

'Birth certificate'
"Sixty-five years ago on this day, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 181, which partitioned the land of historic Palestine into two states and became the birth certificate for Israel," Mr Abbas told the assembly.

"The General Assembly is called upon today to issue a birth certificate of the reality of the State of Palestine," he said.
Now Palestine is an internationally recognized state on par with Vatican City. A return to pre-1968 Israeli borders, a unity government between Fatah and Hamas and a corridor between Gaza and the West bank are the very very knotty issues that need to be addressed.

This is a nice symbolic thing, but it's going to go nowhere as long as some Palestinian leaders insist in trying to "throw Israel into the sea", and, in turn, Israel insists on taking over the Palestinian land completely. This is so messed up this move is only going to make the radical Palestinians feel strenghtened to keep on with their threats and the opposite side in Israel will only feel "left alone by the world" and refuse to dialogue, while they build houses all over the Palestinian land in the hopes of making their takeover a "fait accompli". With some luck, the middleground men will try to build a new future from here on, but it's going to be hard with all the noise around. Very hard.

Canada, one again, proves that it is the US's *****.

I find it ironic that the one nation that, supposedly, stands more for freedom then any other was the one major power that voted against something that would free Palastine from Israel's strangling influence.
