I started my Jurassic Jam challenge on my eshop copy of Red yesterday. I'm one badge in so far (just beat Brock). Started with Charmander, which just evolved into Charmeleon after the battle. I've only found one Poke Ball so far, so I haven't had a chance to flesh out my team at all yet. I need to figure out if there's another good source of non-mart Poke Balls. I had forgotten that Oak's Aide apparently doesn't give you any Poke Balls to start out with in this game.

Re: the no-marts rule, does that apply to the Magikarp for sale near Mt. Moon?

Also, you said we could buy Poke Balls to catch HM slaves if we get stuck. What about to flesh out my team so I don't get stuck doing a solo run if I end up running out of Poke Balls?
Well, I suppose I could consider the magikarp sale a trade with some bystander. And you can buy pokeballs to flesh out your team but you should set yourself a reasonable limit on those. And that only applies to Gen 1 since you don't get any pokeballs from the aide.

If you'd like to play with me, you better be sure you know the game.

For now, I haven't grabbed the Magikarp, but I'm still in Mt. Moon, so I may or may not go back. Or if I can find enough Poke Balls (or buy a couple extra), maybe I'll fish one up later. If I do further challenges beyond Jurassic Jam on Red, I'll definitely need to think about how best to allocate my Poke Balls.

On a positive note, I managed to successfully expand my team using my one remaining Poke Ball! I caught a Paras in Mt. Moon, who I'm now training up alongside Charmeleon. I think I saved somewhere inside Mt. Moon (I play before bed to help me fall asleep, so I was tired and don't quite recall). Next up: fossil selection (which doesn't require any Poke Balls)! I'm leaning towards Helix at this point, as I don't think I've ever used Omastar on my team before. And I think there is a hidden Great Ball somewhere on Route 4, so I'll need to hunt that down as well.

Aside from the Poke Ball issue, the lack of store-bought items hasn't really bothered me so far. We'll see if it becomes more of an issue as I proceed. But it's a fun challenge so far, and there's something about playing it on an actual system that makes me feel more attached to my team (though training is going to be slow without a speed-up button).

Update: Made it to Cerulean. Picked the Helix Fossil along the way. Didn't pick up the Magikarp for now; not sure what my final team will be yet. I just beat Misty, and my Paras evolved into Parasect.

The team:
Charmeleon
Parasect
Both around level 25 (I'll check later)

Next update: I made my way to Vermillion City, boarded the SS Anne, defeated all of the trainers, picked up some items (including a Great Ball), defeated my rival, and obtained Cut. Next, I need to decide who to teach Cut to. Then, onward to the exciting trash can puzzle of the Vermillion City Gym! (It hasn't been too bad of late, but when I first tried to do it in Red, I had terrible luck, and saving and resetting between picking the locks didn't seem to help at all.)

The team: Still just Charmeleon and Parasect, level 29. Debating who member #3 should be.

I'm through Rock Tunnel now on my Jurassic Jam challenge. Things are going somewhat slowly, but I don't have a ton of time to play, so I guess that is what it is. Charmeleon and Parasect are both at level 34, and their movesets are improving (Charmeleon knows Slash now, while Parasect has learned Spore).

Rock Tunnel was somewhat challenging, because we still don't have any decent moves to deal with rock types. Just fire, bug, and normal so far. I'm looking forward to fleshing out my movesets a bit more later on, especially once I've filled out my team a bit more. I'm hoping to add another member to my team soon, perhaps a water type.

Edit: Another update. I've passed through Rock Tunnel, earned my fourth gym badge, and cleared the Rocket Hideout in the casino (which I decided not to skip) and Pokemon Tower. I'm tackling Silph Co next. After much consideration, I also settled on a third member for my team: Magikarp! I first thought about adding one back at Mt. Moon, but ultimately caught one with an Old Rod near Lavender Town. Right now, I'm leveling it up from level 5. It just learned Tackle, so it only has a little ways to go before it evolves and becomes useful! Aside from that, Charmeleon evolved into Charizard, and Parasect finally learned Slash.

The team:
Charizard level 42
Parasect level 41
Magikarp level 15

For the other slots, I'm still deciding, but I'm thinking about Flareon (since I could use another fire type, and I'm out of Pokeballs obtained from places other than Marts), Omastar (my fossil), and either Aerodactyl (my other fossil; I assume it would be fine, even though its types aren't listed, because it would fall under the fossil rule?) or something else, perhaps a bug type like Scyther.

Another update: I've cleared Silph Co., and will soon head to Fuchsia (after beating Sabrina). Magikarp has come into its own as Gyarados, and is quickly becoming an asset to the team (though it still needs some moveset help). I need to start thinking about how best to use some of the TMs that I've collected to make my team a bit better. Still debating whether to pick up an Eevee and add Flareon to my team before moving on or not.

The team:
Charizard level 43
Parasect level 43
Gyarados level 33

Almost done! I've earned the rest of the gym leaders, so now it's onward to the Victory Road and the Elite Four for the conclusion of my Jurassic Jam.

Since last time, I've picked up my fossils, trained up Omastar (Aerodactyl, my second fossil, is still a work in progress), and acquired a Growlithe. I realized that Flareon, my previous plan, sadly wouldn't work because I couldn't evolve it (since there's nowhere to find a Fire Stone outside of the Celadon City Dept Store). Admittedly, Growlithe won't be able to evolve either at this rate (for whatever reason, I didn't think of that until after I started training it), but at least it's a fire type, and it's not something I've used recently.

And, I beat the Elite Four! Done with Jurassic Jam!

The team (levels approximate because I don't have the game in front of me right now):
Charizard lvl 48
Gyarados lvl 50
Parasect lvl 47
Omastar lvl 44
Aerodactyl lvl 40
Growlithe lvl 36

Now that I'm done, I'm trying to level them up a bit more for fun, but they all played some role. (Well, I'm not sure Growlithe did anything all that useful, but I think I sent it out once vs. the Elite Four.)

I think I may do another one of these next. Probably the next one in the sequence (Ice Age) on either Red or Blue.

Alright, I think I'm ready for another challenge. Probably on Blue, unless I decide to restart Red. I'm leaning towards keeping my Jurassic Jam file until I finish the next challenge, though, then transferring everything over to a storage game and starting fresh on both. So, without further adieu:

Update #1:

I started my challenge and have made my way to Cerulean City. Currently traveling to Bill, and then I'll be defeating Misty. My team thus far is as follows (all around level 17-19, I believe):
-Wartortle
-Nidorino (debating when I'm going to evolve it into Nidoking)
-Nidoqueen
-Geodude

I'll be adding Lapras (obviously) and probably one other member. Perhaps Kabutops (got the Dome Fossil this time), or else another rock type like Rhydon. Or I could go for another part-ice type, but if I do that, I don't know which one I would go for. I'm glad that I'm able to form more of my team earlier on this time around, because it was a pain to train up three new team members for the last couple of badges of Jurassic Jam.

An update on my Ice Age challenge on Blue:

I've earned three badges, so I'll be heading on to Rock Tunnel next. My Geodude evolved into Graveler, so now I need to figure out if I want to evolve it into Golem (and if so, I need to start a save file on my other 3DS so I can do the trade evolution; right now, I'm feeling lazy, so it probably won't happen right away, if at all). Right now, I'm also trying to figure out who to add to my team next, and whether I want to have exactly six members in the end, or a different number.

The team (not that different from the last update, and all around level 25):
-Wartortle
-Nidorino
-Nidoqueen
-Graveler

Update: I haven't had much time to play my Ice Age challenge lately, but I've made a little bit of progress. I have four badges now, and am currently scaling the tower in Lavender Town.

The team (all around level 29-30):
-Wartortle
-Nidoqueen
-Nidorino (still can't decide when to go ahead and evolve him)
-Graveler (no chances to trade evolve yet, I'll see if it happens)
-Sandslash (I was thinking of waiting to get my next team member, but I really wanted to add someone else sooner rather than later, and Sandshrew (now Sandslash) fit the bill. One of the things I found really annoying about my last run was trying to double the size of my team between the last couple of gyms. There simply weren't enough trainers to get everyone up to speed, and I didn't enjoy grinding that much. I'll be adding Lapras soon, and perhaps Kabutops as well, if I feel like having more than six Pokemon in rotation.)

I had a long update/run log, but the forum ate it. Oops.

Final Team:
Tarn Helm: L46 Kabutops [Slash, Surf, Harden, Absorb]
Land Shark: L47 Gyarados [Surf, Strength, Bite, Dragon Rage]
Dragon: L46 Charizard [Slash, Cut, Dig, Flamethrower]
Old Moth: L42 Butterfree [Psybeam, Sleep Powder, Poison Powder, Stun Spore]
Ptero: L30 Aerodactyl [Wing Attack, Agility]

As you might guess, the Elite Four burned through all the healing items plus the emergency supplies... Oops.

The playthrough was pretty much what you'd expect. Caterpie got the Viridian Forest PokeBall and Magikarp the Great Ball from the S.S. Anne's trash bin. Kabutops was invaluable for tanking Hyper Beams and Gyarados for covering for everything else's weakness to Ice. Also, it turns out the feared Gen 1 Alakazam does poorly against Slash.

The most amusing moment of the run was Misty's Starmie wiping out Charmeleon and Butterfree, only to fall to the almightly L18 Magikarp. Gave me a good laugh.

Overall a very fun run. Since this isn't a Nuzlocke, the lack of buyable items really didn't affect me (since I could always blackout and come back) until the Elite Four, where even the Emergency Supplies clause was barely enough. To be fair, I ran in without grinding at all, which was pretty suicidal at my levels. Nonetheless, my team (barely) made it.

Nice challenge! It definitely felt like a "prehistoric" team.

Here's my planned team at the moment:
1. Torterra (nose)
2. Kricketune (nose)
3. Togekiss/Togetic (no nose) (not sure how easy Shiny Stones are to get)
4. Drapion (mandatory, no nose)
5. Froslass (no nose)
6. Girafarig (nose)

I'm starting right now, and it shouldn't take me long to get an update here.

EDIT, June 1st:

I was kinda hoping someone else would post soon after me so that I could post again instead of editing, but eh I don't feel like waiting anymore.

Spoiler:

-Started game, randomly chose gender, got girl and named her Dawn
-Named the rival Kane, after the Egyptian mythology book series by Rick Riordan
-Picked Turtwig and won against Kane extremely easily, considering all he did was spam Leer the entire battle
-Went to Lake Verity with Kane, saw Cyrus for the first time
-Went to Sandgem, got Pokedex, named Turtwig Anput, after the goddess of the seventeenth Nome of Upper Egypt. Would have named it Geb after the god of the earth, but it was a girl
-Went through Lucas's tutorials, as well as got the Journal, Parcel, and Running Shoes
-Waited til nightime so that I could catch a Kricketot, named it Thoth after the god of wisdom and writing, since there's no Egyptian music god that I could find
-Went to Jubilife, met Looker, gave Kane the Parcel in the Trainer School and got the Town Map
-Spent some time south of Jubilife trying to level up Thoth (only attacking with Bide is so stupid)
-Beat Kane east of Jubilife after a couple of tries, and made my way to Oreburgh City while trying to train Thoth
-Found Roark in the Mine, and beat him at the gym on the first try using Anput
-IIRC Anput evolved into Grotle and Thoth evolved into Kricketune somewhere between Roark and Floroama, not completely sure
-Fought Team Galactic in Jubilife, caught Builder the Bidoof as an HM slave, taught him Rock Smash, and made my way to Floroama
-Fought Team Galactic in the Meadow and the Windworks, and beat Mars after a couple of tries (Kricketune is so much harder to use than I thought it was)
-Went north through Eterna Forest with Cheryl, and got to Eterna pretty quickly
-Saw the Pokemon statue and Cyrus with Kane, talked to Cynthia
-Sped through Eterna's gym with Thoth (I'm so glad I kept him from evolving for Bug Bite here), and beat Gardenia
-Taught Cut to Builder, sped through the Eterna Team Galactic Hideout, and beat Jupiter after a few tries
-Got the Bicycle, and got the egg from Cynthia
-Hatched the egg, got Shu the Togepi, and gave him the Soothe Bell (named after the god of wind, since he'll be a Flying type)
-Traveled from Eterna to Hearthome, attempting to train Shu along the way (Metronome is not a good attacking move)
-Taught Return to Shu, and started to see him wreck most anything not resistant to Normal
-Stopped Keira's Buneary, went to the Contest Hall, saw Johanna, got the Dress, and sent Fantina to the gym
-Went through the Hearthome Gym pretty slowly (freaking Confuse Ray and Hypnosis) and made it to Fantina
-Spent a while trying random strategies to take out Fantina without using my stock of items, and eventually beat her with mostly luck, and used my first non-Poke Ball and non-Berry item
-Beat Kane east of Hearthome after a couple tries (Double Team Staravia against a team not equipped to handle Flying at the moment is hell)
-Finally got Shu to evolve into Togetic
-Went to Solaceon, got Defog, climbed the Lost Tower, got to the top and released I needed to use Defog and thought you got Strength there, so I caught Air Slave the Golbat, taught him Defog, and went back up only to get the Spell and Cleanse Tags
-Made my way to Velistone, and went south to catch Khonsu the Girafarig (named after the god of the moon)
-Went through the Velistone gym and beat Maylene with very little trouble
-IIRC Anput evolved into Torterra sometime during the Velistone Gym, may be wrong
-Fought Team Galactic, got Lucas's Pokedex back (after his Clefairy used Metronome, got Self-Destruct, and knocked out Khonsu), got Fly, and taught it to Shu
-Went south to Pastoria City, and spent forever in the Great Marsh trying to catch a Skorupi, and caught Serqet the Skorupi (named after the goddess of scorpions)
-Fought Kane, and still had trouble because of that stupid Staravia
-Was expecting to sweep the Pastoria Gym with Anput, but instead took a couple tries because of that stupid Gyarados
-Dealt with Team Galactic, got the SecretPotion, used it on the Psyduck, and made my way to Celestic Town (while dealing with that really annoying fog)
-Spent a while trying to beat Cyrus, finally managed to beat him, and got Surf
-Went west of Hearthome, caught Water Slave the Bibarel, taught him Surf, and Surfed over to Canalave City
-Beat Kane with relative ease compared to the other battles
-Made my way to Iron Island, got Strength, teamed up with Riley, and grinded up until everyone was at least level 39 and Serqet evolved into Drapion (finally no more bug typing!)
-Beat Team Galactic in Iron Island, left Riley, got the Shiny Stone that I will eventually use on Shu, and entered the Canalave Gym

Current Team:

Spoiler:

Anput the Torterra - Level 39 - Overgrow

A brief update for my Ice Age challenge in Blue:

I've gotten my fifth badge from Koga now, which means my team can finally use Surf. I picked up Strength as well. I'm going to head to Silph Co soon, where I'll be picking up a Lapras. Still debating exactly how to round out my team, or whether to use seven Pokemon rather than six, but things are coming along quite nicely. Same team as the last update, just higher levels.

For the base defense of 115+ Pokemon does this mean I can only catch Pokemon that have a base defense of 115+ or can I catch Pokemon that evolve and gain a base defense of 115+

You can catch something that gains 115+ base defense upon evolving as long as you evolve it as soon as you can.

Thanks for letting me know. Also since I'm doing the Post Apocalypse Era is the Zubat line allowed since they are Poison/Flying?

Unfortunately, you can't use the Zubat line because one of their type is a banned type. You can use any other poison dual types as long as the other typing isn't on the banned types list.

Thanks.

Also I am unable to follow the zombie rule as none of the Pokemon I can catch can learn Bite.
