In the interest of national security, does a nation have the right to torture POWs or terror suspects for intelligence that could lead to saving lives or capturing terrorists? Is that considered ethical? Does torture work?(studies says that it doesn't) Should countries that break international treaties & bans on the practice face sanctions from world governing bodies like the UN? Do you think the torture of terror suspects in United States custody after the beginning of the war on terror gave intelligence that directly led to the capture and killing of Osama Bin Laden in May 2011?

Personally, I think stooping to torture is a cop out from real intelligence gathering. There are other ways to gain probably more pertinent information, all while not inflicting such mental and physical pain on another human being like that. Torture doesn't largely work, people will usually say what you want to hear, under that kind of duress.

I'm against torture, personally because why the need to stoop so low when there are other ways to get around the problem. Despite what humans do, its in our nature to hurt others. It's true that you can get the information you want under these circumstances; but its wrong to do so. One may say they're doing this to save lives, but even so, aren't you taking lives in the process? I see this most as being hypocrite. They don't want to suffer the consequences of being invaded, but are glad to invade others and inflict misery upon them. All you're doing is violating their rights as humans without having a care in the world who they might be.

The problem I have with torture has to do with this. They aren't taking lives. Quite the opposite actually. The fact that they act in a way that makes people want death is something completely barbaric in my opinion. My knowledge of torture (and the degree) is limited, but this is assuming that death would appear to be the better option to the tortured person. No human should have to experience something so painful that they wish for death. I'm not saying kill them, as, first of all, that solves no problems, and second, we get into the death penalty which I won't discuss here. As mentioned, there are other ways to gather intelligence, just as there is the chance that the extracted information is invalid. Overall there's just too many physical and ethical flaws with this to be used.
