I know we have a relationship thread somewhere, but I wanna know. Do you guys believe in true love? Or do you just go through the motions in each relationship? Add whatever you need to but remember to stay on topic.

I'll start by saying yes, I do believe in it. Why? Past experiences for the most part. It's hard to be selfish (imo, anyway) when the other person pours their heart for you and acts selflessly. The fact that the person who truly loves you would hardly refuse you anything makes me warm inside.

But as I said, it's all from past experiences. What do you guys think of love in general?

"You lot. You spend all your time thinking about dying. Like you're going to get killed by eggs or beef or global warming or asteroids. But you never take the time to imagine the impossible. That maybe you survive." -The Ninth Doctor

I speak from no experience when I say true love is definitely real. Obviously each person may define it as different, but ultimately the emotion is real. The kind of love that occurs between two people may not always be true love; it kinda stands out to me as your "final" love, the one that you'll take to the grave. It does not just have to be human either. Love can exist for an inanimate object or a living object.

I believe in True Love, but I think it's something acquired through time. You don't just look at someone and fall in love. This isn't a fairy tale. It's real life.

Im going to be honest and say I don't believe in stuff like "soul mates" or a "perfect match". I don't mean to come across as cynical, I just don't see it as being a very realistic thing. I don't know that most people find a "true love" nor do I believe anyone is perfect. I think if I ever do get married/find someone I love it won't be like that, but rather I hope to find someone who is compatible with me, shares interests with me and treats me with love and respect.

Love yourself first so you can be able to fall in love really...it does exists but it has a different meaning from a person to another.
She never taught him how to cry only how to sing.
Happy in herself - just as she wished to be -
she taught him endless space and vastness
and she calls him: Open-hearted.

I feel like love has to exist, even though I haven't experienced it yet. A lot of my closer interpersonal relationships are "going through the motions", as it were. One day it'll all turn into my favor, but I've never been introduced to love as a concept with another human being and all that. At least not romantic love.

Love can be one of the most powerful influences of our life choices.

The reason why it's so relates to natural selection.

Natural selection dictates that those that are "fittest", meaning, those that are able to reproduce the most and pass down their DNA to offspring, affects biological changes in a species. Species with certain traits that are not conducive with fitness, die, and those traits are not passed down to offspring. The transmission of DNA, is one of the greatest motivators of human behavior, despite not being completely conscious of this phenomena.

Anyway, the species man has evolved from, favored those organisms that had most reproductive urges, ensuring they asserted themselves over others of the species in producing offspring. Those that did not assert themselves would not yield offspring, and therefore, that trait of less sexual drive would die out with those specimen with that trait.

Though nowadays, many people are no interested in having children, the urges to find a mate have not let up. We are biologically wired to want to have sex as well as other traits including protection of family members, given that those organisms that protected their close family members did indirectly ensure, let's say a sibling or child would survive. Thus, these relative's DNA, and traits, would also remain prevalent.

Intense sexual and emotional desires are advantageous characteristics for humans, those without sexual or emotional desires have, for the most part, been out reproduced by those with these traits.

With that said, love, in a way, is a biological construct that is directly correlated to one of the most driving factors of human behavior, that is, reproduction and transmission of genetic information. Therefore, it's important that we rationalize our instincts in order to account for other matters beyond reproduction, such as family relations, work, finances, psychological well being, among other factors when we consider dating someone. True love, goes beyond someone who will reproduce with us, it's someone who will improve our lives and happiness beyond sexual stimulus (though I wouldn't preclude this factor!!!!). Moreover, love is something we should discover through reason, rather being blinded and enslaved by solely our biological passions.

Let me reiterate one thing real quick. Those that don't or can't have children, will still have these biological dispositions for the vast majority of people.

I absolutely believe in true love, but I also believe very few people experience it. Its hard not to believe in soul mates when you look at the fact that there are billions and billions of people with billions and billions of different personalities and different interests, lifestyles, hobbies, and experiences. Surely there is someone out there that aligns with yours perfectly in a way that you both can share and experience together and appreciate equally.
