I'm really wishing that I had the money for another terabyte or two of external hard drive space so that I could keep more files than what I have now..

What planet are you on? It cost a bit under $130 and the 3 tb cost $120.
I hail fron the magical forests of Amazon. How 'bout you?

EDIT: Let me guess, you're not buying WD, are you? That's too bad.

What do you need a terabyte of space for?

I don't think I'll need more than 300 GB of space...but right now I'm thinking of buying a 1 TB hard drive just for backup purposes & stuff.

There's really much more productive things you can do with a lot less space. On my old 320 GB MyBook, I had 50 GB of ROM hacking files, 30 GB of pictures, and no more than 8 GB of music and videos (and the music was all lossless Waveform files). Another 2 GB was dedicated to Visual Studio projects, and the rest was miscellanious files. All of it totaled around 180 GB.

The only time you'd need more than a terabyte is if you're stockpiling videos, which, let's face it, is nowhere near as productive as reverse-engineering video games. :/

Isn't waveform a really large file size? How many albums would that be, like 50 or something? Not enough music for me.

Why are HDD so cheap nowadays D: Install sizes for games haven't been growing as fast as storage space/dollar. Unless you're playing Mass Effect 5 which will require 100 GB of install space.
With internet speeds increasing, and the availability of "unlimited" downloads, it means people have access to a lot more data. People can easily download huge amounts of movies, songs, tv shows and such overnight.

The big rise in pirating sites has aided this as well, as all these large downloads are stored in one spot.

(For me, I have 600-800GB in Steam games alone. Not sure how, exactly, but games like TF2 take up about 10-12GB I think?)

That sure is a lot of games. The biggest game I've ever installed was the Cinematic mod for HL2, which ended up being like 50GB. But other than that, I might have maximum 200 GB of games? Iunno, I don't really play the latest and greatest, and a lot of stuff like CoD or Battlefield I delete after I finish the campaign.

I guess it should be no surprise that these video games (especially ones from Steam) take up to 10GB of space total.. but I don't play video games on my computer at all so I wouldn't know xD

Let's say you have a 4TB drive and use up half of it for games. Let's say the average game is 20GB an install (exaggerating on the large side). That's still 100 games. And 20GB games are usually the big blockbuster ones, not the old classics or indie games. Are there even 100 blockbuster shooters within the past ten years? And could you even be interested in a fraction of those at a time? Human attention is limited, and as a gamer I don't think I could use such a large capacity drive.

It doesn't have to be shooters, a lot of AAA titles from 2005-2009 all could easily hit that mark, and a lot of them are WRPGs, racing games, and even strategy games. 100 games with each hitting 20gigs is an easy thing to do without keeping things in check.

Oh I know the joys of space saving for pirating, but it was the topic at hand I was answering to. I have like what, 3 external drives at a terabyte each?

Could you keep your mind on 100 games at a time? I'm a person who tackles gaming one at a time as projects - in that I'll play CoD: Ghosts one week, and complete Borderlands the two weeks after that, and then run through Tales of Phantasia over the course of the following month. Of course, there are games I play constitutively like the Counterstrikes and HoMM3. In any case, I only have attention for one or two blockbusters at a given time, as well as the few I play on the side.

You guys obviously don't pirate anything lol. TV shows take up a ton of space!
And I don't watch TV. Games consume enough time by themselves ;;

Backups more than anything are what take up most of the space on my 1TB external hard drive right now..

Same with me as well, even though mine's not just backup from the PC's data, I'm storing the files that I used when I'm editing videos too that it fills much of my external hard drive.

I was curious so I had to check;
Skyrim: 56.4GB
Oblivion: 35.9GB
Fallout3: 28.8GB
Fallout NV: 26.1GB

It occurs to me that I may download a few too many mods.

Naturally, I'm a well behaved adult woman and as such I would never pirate anything.
Music: 213.1GB
Movies: 180.0GB
Pictures: 21GB
TV: 71.3GB

Perhaps I'll buy myself a new hard drive for Christmas.

It doesn't have to do with keeping 100 games on my mind as much as it has to do with steam sales. Its a bottomless pit that thing.

I can't believe that I'm paranoid enough on running low on hard drive space to be honest and I don't really even pirate content at all..
