not sure if this belongs in PVP or if a mod would approve of this topic...

Do you think Pokémon are for battling or for having a strong emotional bond with???

(the reason why I think a mod may disapprove because it could imply Poképhila but that is NOT the entirety of what this topic is supposed to be about)

Pokémon may have their attacks and are good battlers but do you think they are meant to battle or do you think bonding with your Pokémon is more important? are Pokémon just battlers or do you think you should bond with them? many people bond with their pets, do you think Pokémon should be the same way?

I think bonding and battling with Pokémon are fine, but battling isn't mandatory. In the anime plenty of Pokémon have been seen hanging around peoples houses and helping around town. I don't think it's even a question that Pokémon aren't just for battling, that would almost be neglect. You can't just battle with a Pokémon and then shove it in a PC until next time. I think bonding with Pokémon is required since they become domesticated once you catch them, and when you have a pet you have to care for it.

P.S. - When I read "strong emotional bond" I didn't think anything other than the way you love your own pet. "Poképhila" never crossed my mind and wouldn't have if I wouldn't have read it in this post, so you could maybe delete that part. Just a suggestion.
I don't use "uber" Pokémon, I don't calculate stat values, I don't use cheating devices, I don't breed my way to perfection, and I don't care about natures. I catch my Pokemon the way they are, and treat them like individuals instead of brainless drones. If you use this philosophy, copy & paste this into your signature.

If Pokémon were real, then they'd be more for bonding. You would have to treat them as if they're your best friends, feed them, and spend quality time with them like you would with any of your pets. If you don't do any of that, then your Pokémon will start disliking you and refuse to listen to anything you say. Pokémon would have feelings as much as animals—maybe even more. They'd be very prestigious, so if you ever owned one, it would be your responsibility to make sure that anything doesn't happen to it.

In-game though, Pokémon are used for battling, more or less. d: People EV train them, breed them so that they can have the perfect mixture of natures and abilities, try to get them inflicted with PokéRus, and all sorts of stuff just so they can be the strongest. The stronger Pokémon you have on your team, the more battles you're going to win.

Pretty much going to agree with this 100%. If Pokemon really existed, my first priority would be to form a good emotional bond with them because what is battling if you can't connect with your Pokemon? In game though, it is obviously about battling because that is what the games are focused around. Sure some elements of bonding are required for friendship evolutions but for the most part, the primary focus is on training your Pokemon.

As long as the discussion doesn't start heading in that direction, I've got no problem with this thread being here.

In my opinion, you should be able to both battle with your Pokemon and be able to bond with them, hopefully leaning towards the latter a bit more. The games kind of present us an unrealistic situation where our goal is to catch as many Pokemon as possible while almost exclusively training them to be strong. The player in the games seems to be an exception though, as most other NPCs, along with trainers in the anime and whatnot, seem to focus on just a few Pokemon, sometimes for battling, but mostly as companions.

I know that it Pokemon were real, I'd personally care more about bonding with my Pokemon than training them, but that wouldn't stop us from trying.
