How do you value the intelligence of a Pokémon?
We know that some Pokémon are naturally intelligent by species but sometimes it's rather exaggerated (5000 IQ Alakazam I mean whud) and we know that some Pokémon seem to be 'cleverer' as they evolve. While I'm dabbling with the Pokédex until now, I wanted to think more about the personal intelligence of a Pokémon. Some Pokémon are intellectually gifted (Ash's Noctowl, for one) so obviously some may not. Do you think this should ultimately affect their strength and capabilities in battles (we know some natures that seem suitable for clever Pokémon) and things?

Ideally speaking, do you think intelligence in a Pokémon can vary greatly as well as mean a lot to the Pokémon or do you think that a Pokémon's intelligence is more based on its inheritance/species?

Do you think a more intelligent Pokémon should be able to learn extra moves and less intelligent Pokémon not know them? Do you think a more intelligent Pokémon can make better use of a move, etc.?

With that 5000 IQ Alakazam could possess an entire understanding of the Universe.

But I think most Pokemon are slightly more intelligent than the living things on Earth, and even then their intelligence varies greatly.

Allow me to be stereotypical in saying that brains don't usually come with brawn, and vice versa (obviously I know this isn't true, but let's say it is for the sake of argument). This is sorta how I think of the difference between Attack and Special Attack. Attack is all the physical capabilities of a Pokemon that don't necessarily involve intelligence. Sp. Attack though is more intellectual, and as such, Pokemon like Alakazam exhibit higher base Sp. Atk. It's not that more intelligent Pokemon have advantage over non-intelligent Pokemon, they just excel at different things.

That's a really interesting theory.

I feel that pokémon can be just as great in battle if they are strong (spec. atk or atk) but somewhat non-intellectual, as if they are intelligent but perhaps a bit weaker. The anime shows this in some cases. Small or otherwise frail pokémon can win against big, powerful pokémon by using their smarts rather than go all out with attacks.

This can't really be shown in the games, since the only thing pokémon can do is attack. Perhaps using a lot of attacks like Double Team and Growl is a type of smarts to avoid powerful attacks from an opponent.

But the thing is, I can only imagine that intelligence can affect battling in a good way. Unless a pokémon is convinced that battling is a bad thing, of course :p So a big, strong, smart pokémon is the most powerful at all - like the legendaries. Above normal intellectual powers, most can even talk telepathically! Keldeo wasn't psychic type, and it could do so, for instance.

So I think pokémon attack strength, be it Flamethrowers or Low Kicks, depends on the level of the pokémon (age, maturity if you want to be realistic outside of the games) and not strictly on intelligence.

I also guess intelligence can vary between members of the same race somewhat (Pikachu and another Pikachu) but mostly its the same. Just like one mouse in our world is likely somewhat on the same level of intelligence as another mouse, and most dolphins are considered more intelligent than mice.

Do you think a more intelligent Pokémon can make better use of a move, etc.?
So this, I can agree with :3

I have held the same notion, special moves are intellect based while physical are brawn based. However, I recently came to a more compatible idea, one that fits move sets and in game mechanics. The pokemon who are more intelligent will have more status moves, and those with less intelligence would have fewer status moves, over the course of all evolutions mind you.

Status afflictions are inherently strategy based, and thus using them is a sign of intelligence compared to damage only moves. Other moves that would qualify are those which are not effected by types, even instant KO moves, could be thought of as the pokemon is smart enough to balance out the terms of engagement. Swap out moves, like u-turn, would also qualify as a strategic move, unlike earthquake which is just rampaging.

Just some thoughts in the mix.
If you add me, please message me so I can reciprocate. No, garbage does not make a cute Pokemon, and it smells funny.

It seems to me that, although the intelligence level of any specific Pokémon species varies, most Pokémon have at least the intelligence level of real-world animals. In Pokémon The Movie: 2000, Professor Ivy stated that Pokémon are more in tune with nature than humans, when explaining why the wild Pokémon were going crazy and migrating when the Legendary Birds were captured on the Orange Islands.

I think it's a bit odd that Pokémon are usually known to posses a specific level of intelligence. Everyone is different, and Pokémon should be too! I want to catch the world's stupidest Alakazam!

Deep Thoughts...
The people of the Pokémon world aren't too creative. They named Pokémon after what sound they make. If we were like them, a cow would be called a "moo".

I'm Reading...
Just finished a volume of Soul Eater, volume 14. At this point, it has become very different compared to the anime, and I kind of like it. Some of the characters have gotten a lot more fleshed out (specifically the meister team of Ox, Kilik, and Kim), and things are happening quite differently. An exciting read.

I'm Playing...
The iPod music game, Cytus. While I may not know very many of the songs, I really like its music, and the gameplay is easy to pick up yet takes quite a while to master. A friend has seen me play it and he says I make it look easy, but I am still having a fun and challenging time. Definitely worth the price.
