Hey!
So, here's the deal. I have an Eevee on my Pokémon Y. When I caught it I decided that I'm not going to make it evolve, I just wanted Eevee to be Eevee. It's not that I don't like all the eeveelutions, I like them all! especially Espeon and Sylveon^^ But I felt like I wanted Eevee to be the one Eevee wants to be, not the one that I want it to be.

One day when I was surfing the internet I saw a picture of Eevee looking all sad and it had the caption "Why does everyone want me to change?" So then I was like "I'm not going to change you!!!"

The thing is, my Eevee suddenly evolved into an Espeon. Since Eevee evolves into Espeon because it likes its trainer, I'm not sure what to do. I mean, it's not like I forced Eevee to evolve into Espeon. Maybe it just wants to be an Espeon.
BUT maybe Eevee actually didn't want to evolve. It just happened because it liked me too much.
I don't know what to do anymore, I just want my Eevee to be the one it wants to be.

SO the question is, what does Eevee want? What should I do?

I think that if you were partnered with your Eevee and it really liked you, it would want to be stronger just for you, which is why I think it would like to evolve. As for into what, that's a tough one.

Assuming it was real and could understand people, if I had an Eevee that had to evolve, I'd lay out the stones and choices in front of it and let it choose. The friendship ones would be tougher to decide though...

It doesn't matter what your pokemon wants. As long as you have all 8 gym badges, any pokemon must obey you. You're the trainer, you give the orders. Kinda like parenting.
Haha, that's one way to look at it. Especially if you just play the game and pick strong pokémon just to beat the game. I usually play it trying to build a personal and nice team I can relate to and put names on and enjoy playing with. It's the charm of pokémon, imo, that instead of playing an adventure game several times with the same characters, you can play it again and again with completely different main characters (your pokémon team).

If you see it like Micu does, it certainly is a dilemma. In the games, Eevee will simply evolve when it's happiness is high enough and you haven't evolved it into something else yet. But if we don't just consider the games, take the PokéSpe manga as an example. Red's Eevee could first evolve into the Kanto evos and then back, because it was genetically experimented on. The changes hurt it though, so eventually it became an Espeon because it liked Red so much and felt better being a single species than having the power (and pain) of being able to change.

In the anime, there is a boy and his Eevee in the very first season who struggle with deciding on what to evolve into. Eventually it stays an Eevee though, since the boy decides that Eevee is good as it is.

I personally think it depends on the personality of the Eevee. As with any evolution in pokémon. If the pokémon was a strong willed type who really wanted to get stronger and better, a good trainer would recognize that and let it evolve into the species that best fit its goals, or the trainer's goals I guess. But if it was a more peaceful pokémon who mostly just wanted to exist and live a good life, maybe evolution would be unnecessary. Remember Ash's Bulbasaur also, who is a great fighter despite choosing not to evolve! And there's Pikachu also, of course, haha.

For you, Micu, I suppose it depends on how much emotions you want to put into your game :3 I find any game much more enjoyable if I don't just play it to get a high score, but try to really immerse myself in it.

Well I wish the game was programmed to where pokemon had emotions and reactions to things that happed in battle, or evolution, or switching it from the front, etc. I think Gamefreak's getting real close to making Pokemon have "opinions" on things. It would really add to the immersion. However, I would evolve it the first opportunity I get if I were in Micu's shoes. I like to believe all Pokemon want to evolve, to become stronger or bigger, which is why if you want best for your Eevee, I recommend evolving it ;).

My Eevee tried multiple times to evolve into Umbreon and Espeon before I found an Everstone and I think what happens is that Eevee tend to get over-excited with all the love they have for their trainer and they get caught up in the moment and start to evolve.

At the end of the day, I think eevee just wants to make you happy, so if you're happy with it being an eevee, throw it an everstone so it doesn't accidentally evolve, and if you want it to be a happiness evolution, let it do what it will.

Yeah, I think you're right. In fact you're all right. In the end I decided to let it be an Espeon! or well, I didn't save the game at first after it evolved since I wanted to be able to restart the game if I wanted my Eevee back. But when I was playing I just accidentally saved my game without thinking. At first I kinda panicked but then I realized that I guess it'll be ok to keep it as an Espeon since Espeon is really pretty and it probably likes being an Espeon^^
Thanks for your replies! They were all nice and I was surprised that you didn't just say "It's just a game, duuuh. your pokémon doesn't have any feelings." Even though that's true I still think Eevee's feelings are worth to consider ;)

This thread is really interesting. I like the question.

I think Eevees are designed (with no outside interference) to either evolve into Umbreon, Sylveon, or Espeon depending on its conditions and how it grows. The stone evolutions are less natural, because they require a stone.

I think Sylveon is the most organic and honest evolution process, since the other two require it to be a particular part of the day or night, whereas Sylveon just requires love.

If Eevee evolved totally without planning, then let it be Espeon.

I never actually thought of those before, I just turn the Pokemon into what I want. But say level 36 has come, your starter will evolve no matter what unless YOU choose to press B. In the anime, multiple Pokemon have chosen to fight evolving when it comes even naturally.

So, what I'm trying to say is, if you wonder if Eevee is okay with being Espeon, you should wonder if any of your Pokemon are happy to have evolved. The fact is, you have to choose whether they are happy or not and/or to care or not. Theres no way for your Pokemon to stop evolution like in the anime, only you can.

An idea that came to my mind is to think about the personality you imagine your Eevee having, then think about whether you think that personality could fit an Espeon well and if you think a Eevee with a personality like yours would want to be Espeon. If so, keep it. If not, reload!

It greatly depends on how you play, think, feel and perceive the game. Do you care much about your Pokémon's health? Do you value sentimental attachment to an object of less importance often? If you treat them as mindless drones who are merely pixels on a screen, then you wouldn't need to care about that. Eevee evolved, be happy. Now EV up your evolved form of Eevee (EV Eevee lol) and take care! Espeon is not so bad in battling, but now your movesets have improved! However, this does mean all the moves you've planned need a reshuffle.

If you treat them at face-level (i.e real life creatures) then you could say that your Eevee evolved because fate compelled that she (I'm assuming she's a she) should evolve. At the end, it was your choice to stop her to evolve by pressing B. Eevee wouldn't have liked it at first but she could get used to being Espeon. A good researcher of Pokémon Emotions might tell you that Espeon certainly prefers her new strengths, yet she isn't forgetting her past.

What I really like about what you did is that you let your Eevee be free as possible. You didn't force her to utilize a stone or drag her into a power spot. What you did is honourable, I congratulate you.

Oi. The grand old topic of Eevee wanting to change.

An Eevee is meant to evolve, and a Pokemon's goal in its "life" is to be at it's highest potential. The Eevee won't do you any good unevolved, and when it fails in its battle I'd believe your Eevee would think it had failed you, it would think it'd need to do better.

If it was so intensely happy from you caring from it, then it must have wanted to be an Espeon! Like Hoenn said, you did a good thing for the Pokemon and you rightfully considered its needs when it wanted to evolve.

What if hypothetically speaking, the said Eevee were like Ash's Pikachu and wanted to get stronger without evolution,

And he could've stopped the evolution just press B, if that still works for x and y.

Impossible. Eevee could never be as stupid as Ash's Pikachu (who, for the record, is very stupid) :P I think Pikachu's afraid of evolution, maybe Ash won't like him as much if he changed or something. Surely he knows that he'll never be as strong if he doesn't evolve?

And he could've stopped the evolution just press B, if that still works for x and y.
Do you mean Eevee could've or the trainer could've?

If pokemon were real and I was a trainer, I would want it to share its feelings. When I read the first post, I was going to say to do exactly what CliCliW said to do!

All About Dan! (at the moment, at least)
Deep Thoughts...
The people of the Pokémon world aren't too creative. They named Pokémon after what sound they make. If we were like them, a cow would be called a "moo".

I'm Reading...
Just finished a volume of Soul Eater, volume 14. At this point, it has become very different compared to the anime, and I kind of like it. Some of the characters have gotten a lot more fleshed out (specifically the meister team of Ox, Kilik, and Kim), and things are happening quite differently. An exciting read.

I'm Playing...
The iPod music game, Cytus. While I may not know very many of the songs, I really like its music, and the gameplay is easy to pick up yet takes quite a while to master. A friend has seen me play it and he says I make it look easy, but I am still having a fun and challenging time. Definitely worth the price.

It's all up to the Eevee. If it likes you, at would show you it's happens and evolve into Espeon. It's because you've been travelling with it for so long, and automatically starts to evolve as the happiness and feelings increase. Yeah, it can stay as an Eevee, but why not let it evolve if it's happy? It's part of the journey. You've bonded so much with your Eevee, that it triggers a special evolution. :>

It's all up to the trainer, when a trainer obtains a Pokémon (Eevee in this case), the Pokémon as it bonds with the trainer will "shape" into what he/she is.

A bit like Ekans/Koffing in the anime (if you recall the earliest episodes, in which they talk to eachother), Pokémons are not evil themselves but they can be if the trainer is, and they will be happy to do so as they will fullfil their role.

In a different case, if the trainer is a fire-type an Eevee would be happy to be a Flareon only because the trainer it bonded with loves fire, they're essentially like a twin-soul which conviniently can shape into what you are "inside", just like a mirror.
