Why do Archie, Maxie, and Cyrus all have a Golbat in their respective teams? It evolves by happiness/friendship, right? I mean, I guess I can understand Maxie and Archie—they're not incredibly malevolent, albeit dumb as bricks. But Cyrus? I know he's polite and isn't abusive to his poke'mon, but seriously?! He wants to destroy the whole universe! You'd think a poke'mon would be able to sense something.

Perhaps their ability to evolve a Golbat indicates their dedication to Pokemon and their ability as trainers. Their intentions may be malevolent, but especially for these teams specifically, their goals aren't Pokemon-oriented as much as like Plasma.

I think you mean Crobat. But yea, I can imagine that they're good enough friends with their Pokemon. Don't forget, this isn't Team Rocket we're talking about, who are basically PokePoachers. Team Aqua, Magma, and Galactic are just zealots with really boneheaded ideals. I'm sure that as long as their Pokemon are willing to help them further their ideals, they can just as easily care for them and value their friendship.

With Cyrus it's a little harder to understand though, since he's a total nihilist. Maybe he just has a soft spot? There could be a whole story behind it, like maybe it was the Pokemon he grew up with or something.

I agree that I can understand it better with Maxie and Archie than Cyrus. They have a love for the environment after all - and go about their actions in a very misguided manner, certainly. ('Hey guys making this volcano erupt via energy from a meteorite (???) will benefit the environment! =D') So they may well also have a deep caring for their Pokemon.

But Cyrus is harder to see, because he is canonically set up to be a guy who hates emotions and all. So it doesn't make much sense that he loves his Crobat that much...

...unless, of course, the Golbat evolved because despite that, it loves its own Trainer enough. Actually that's a pretty interesting angle to write about, now that I think about it. A Pokemon loving its trainer, yet him being so anti-emotion and etc to try and create a new world. Whoops.

Maybe deep down he (Cyrus) does have some tiny iota of love inside him for his Crobat, which his Pokemon can sense, but even he himself isn't aware of it. Perhaps his emotions are just bottled up inside him and he doesn't show them, but you know Pokemon...they have a sixth sense for how their trainers feel about them.

Doh. I did mean Crobat, not Golbat >_<

I think you're right, Cathy. Cyrus is a nihilist, but he clearly does have emotions. I mean, he did have that whole emotional breakdown. Maybe he's one of those "ineffective sociopaths" like the main character in The Stranger by Camus, lol.

I'm sure there are plenty of poke'mon whose love for their trainers is unrequited, though.
