There are six stats and six possible marks. Let's say I have a Pokémon with 31 IV's in HP (the first stat), then I'll mark them with a circle (which is, iirc, the first possible mark).

I'm making it sound more complicated than it is but it's really simple and I'm pretty sure this is what the marks are most used for.

I just highlight the marks that correspond to a max IV. I think GameFreak figured out people were doing this because in X and Y all the marks are unhighlighted by default rather than highlighted. So yea, that's the most common use, but house can use them for whatever you want.

Once I breed a lot of a specific Pokémon, I tend to mark which ones to keep for chain breeding, which ones are really good, and which ones to release. This is all based on natures, characteristics and so on.

In RSE, I used to mark Pokemon with a Triangle&Heart if they were a part of my in-game team or just a Heart if I bred them.

Now I use the 6 markings to denote perfect IVs in Hp/Atk/Def/SpAtk/SpDef/Spe.

What method are you guys using to calculate IVs?

And forgive my ignorance, but how does it help to know what a single IV is? Wouldn't it be better to keep track of all six in some other way? How is this marking used?

Hm... I don't tend to use markings, but now that I think about it, that could be useful, I'll get back to that probably. XD

I use them for marking perfect IVs. I have set boxes for breeding, some for wild captures, some for those I want to keep. Using it to mark IVs help a lot if you breed and trade Perfect IV Mons

Like a lot of others, I use them for IVs. :) There are just enough symbols for each stat so that makes remembering things so much easier, especially if you breed competitive Pokemon a lot!

In Diamond, my system was:
-Circle for pokemon that I need the pre-evolutions for the dex, representing an egg shape.
-Triangle for pokemon that I need evolutions for the dex, representing an upward arrow
-Square to easily locate pokemon with Pokerus
-Heart shape for traded pokemon
-Star for EV trained pokemon
-Diamond shape for shinies

As of XY, I just use them for IVs though.

Alot have mostly started using them to signify a Perfect IV stat it has in, and if you haven't, you really should. It could help you and other people who you trade some Pokemon to.
Trainer Data:
Full Name: Mithel "Myth" Celestia
Gender: Male
Hometown: Lacunosa Town
Trainer class: Ranger, Psychic, Deceiver*
Specializes in: Dark, Psychic-Types

*Deceiver (Japanese: 奇術師 Illusionist) is a type of trainer class who specializes in Illusions and deceptive tactics to take advantage of their opponents. They are tricksters and tend to disguise themselves as another trainer class to deceive challenging trainers, but soon break off of it as soon as they are found. They tend to use annoyer and stall tactics such as Embargo and Swagger along with bulky and fast Dark-types like Zoroark and Umbreon to give trainers a hard time during battle.
