...are the foundation for games today? Or do you think that today's games have skewed off into their own original tangents that have the potential to be foundations for future games?

Note: By classic I'm referring to anything strictly before the Nintendo 64.

Hm. I know that I recently have been going on about games that should of stick to traditional means (especially the Sonic games), because I believe that while some of the mechanics of classic games were good, they also worked. I think some games today do provide an essence from their previous classic game, in which game developers continue to build on that.

At the same time.. hm. For today's games that have driven away from classics, it depends on opinions, I think. If people really like the game, then yeah, I'd see it can delve into future generations, and this, today's games can be considered 'classic' for the future generations of gamers. If not then.. we usually don't hear about those games anymore - some people feel that those types of games are underrated, or maybe they just didn't work out too well. Ah, sorry if my reasoning doesn't make any sense, but yeah.

Why does it have to be one way or the other? I think every game - nay, everything humans create - is influenced by others of its kind in some way. But if you're asking whether it's possible to be influenced only indirectly by classic games (i.e. only by being influenced by modern games that are influenced by classic ones), I would say yes on a logical level, although it's unlikely to happen with any given game designer because certain old games are so highly regarded and so widely played.

Well, considering Super Mario Bros was the foundation of the same game design that is studied and applied to every game since, pretty much yeah.

It is pretty much required to study that game if you want to take game design. It's the "bible", pretty much.

It's influential and important to be aware of, I know, but I'd wager that modern game designers would find it very poorly designed if they didn't realize it was Super Mario Bros. The arbitrary difficulty fluctuations, questionable item placement, and trial-and-error deaths keep it off my "good game" list. (This isn't because I love the Sonic series so much in comparison; the original Sonic the Hedgehog has similar flaws.)

They have to be the foundation, they're what started the catalyst and the revolution of gaming! It is still common to see the prevalence of the classic mechanics in games today. GTA V still has small elements of GTA 1, the cops still chase after you. Pokemon X and Y, still share many of the same mechanics of Red and Blue. If there wasn't a solid foundation, we wouldn't be this far with the games today.
