Colony (and Seph!)

I have no idea about the megaman world or anything to do with it - but what you have so far reads really well. There are a lot of terms to learn, so I'm glad you've included a glossary for all the abbreviations and things. However, some terms might be better integrated.

Perhaps a list of bullet points in the 'You' section would outline the different possibilities (Virus Busting, NetBattles, some examples of classes) would be better than using the words and needing the reader to look down and work out what they mean. It would also help condense the glossary slightly so it's a bit less daunting.

Otherwise, looking good :o.

-----------------------------------------------

Here is one of my WIPs (one of many). Please let me know what you think about it and it's ability to be a roleplay. Ask questions by all means!

Spoiler:
PokéLINK: Alpha

Lights flicker on above your head.

A foreign, yet familiar room.

The walls, the floor, the ceiling are all concrete. Where is the door? There isn't one.

Sparse decorations around the room, you recognise them as your things.

One item sticks out. A large TV embedded into the wall, a gaming remote hanging beneath it.

It flickers on by itself. An animated cartoon girl on the display.

Background:

MEGAFaker© are one of the largest gaming companies in the world. In this parallel universe, they have successfully displaced all other game developers and completely monopolise the market. Their chairman, not satisfied with the the lack of competition, has embarked on a new aim - to create the ultimate gaming experience.

A game where your freedom is on the line.

The megalomaniac's wishes game true when a budding games engineer, Professor O. Akerberry, proposed a social experiment - utilising the company's newest project, Pocket-Link, and putting some unwilling students through their paces.

Pocket-Link, or PokéLINK as it was more commonly known, was a rehash of a failed classic - Pocket Monsters. However, instead of the old single player version, the professor had adapted it to form an online, multiplayer experience.

The game, rigged up in every cell-like room, pushed the players to complete task after task. Working together, and sometimes competing, for prizes and luxuries. The prisoners have little choice but to play - without levelling they are refused food and water; only those that complete the game will walk free.

It didn't take long for MEGAFaker© to pick its targets. A nearby, international university was bustling with students - six missing wouldn't cause much of a stir, and could go unnoticed for weeks.

With that, a new game was ready to begin.

Reward and Punishment:

For completing tasks and reaching goals the players can expect to receive a reward. There is always a choice for rewards, although the precise details are not known until you choose either way. The choice will always be between a real-life reward and an in-game reward.

RL rewards: New decorations for your room, personal items from home, room upgrades (bedding, lighting, space) or specially chosen gifts.

IG rewards: Pokémon evolutions, rare encounters, bonus items, move tutoring or baby pokémon.

After each gaming period; any player who takes part in a gaming session will be rewarded with one hour access to a communal room. Any prize you receive is considered your property, and as such you can use it as you like - some rewards can be kept back or given up.

Punishments are given out if your player refused to play, or damages MEGAFaker© property.

Regarding the Pokelink roleplay, the only thing that seems a bit off is kidnapping the players. I think it would be better if the students were conned thinking they were just doing some sort of job (like a beta test for a game or some type of study) for the company only to realize the reality of what they signed up for once they got there. They would basically be kidnapped, but they're disappearance can be explained for.

Edit: Just for some other thoughts, where do you think the roleplay would start? I think it might be best to start a bit after they've been kidnapped, so they're kind of experienced with the game and know the consequences of their actions, if they choose to take that path, without wasting time letting characters experience it.

Second, what type of mechanics where you thinking about the game and how do you think people would be able to roleplay it in an enjoyable way. From just initial thoughts, trying to roleplay a classic pokemon game would be a bit difficult if not boring.

So I have had this thought for a digimon roleplay in the back of my head and I'm just curious of what you'd think about it.
Spoiler:

Basic premise is that it'll be a sandbox faction type roleplay, where players will be fighting to gain territory and allies. The map will function on a grid system where each grid would represent a server or domain that one character would have complete control over.

I'd have to make rules for how changing grids work, but the basic idea would be when you defeat an owner of the grid, you'd be given the grid's code crown (a la Xros Wars) and be given the right to change every aspect of the area. So if the area was some volcano and you won the code crown, you can make it a tropical forest or an endless sea or whatever your taste prefers. It's your place to do what you want.

There would be a few factions in placed from the start of the roleplay, the two that must be included being the demon lords and the royal knights. Each member would have their own area, but they'd still work together united as a faction.

One rule that I'm not sure about yet is if I want to make it so one person can only own on code crown at a time or if a single individual can own multiple crowns. There's benefits in the scheme of things when it comes to a single person owning multiple crowns, but it would also make someone taking an area a really big power jump, so single crowns would be easier and give powers to the idea of having factions.

Regarding actual players, I'd like them to have freedom in making their own decisions and changing the world. As such people are free to player as a tamer with a partner digimon or a solo digimon on a quest for glory. Additionally I'd also like the roleplay to welcome people to join whenever, since I feel like that's one secret to longevity around here (See Pink's SAO roleplay). Though that brings up the question on how strong players should be allowed to be when they join the roleplay. I like the idea of progression and developing a bong between tamer and digimon, while letting solo digimon starting at a higher level of strength, but I also like the idea of tamer/digimon already having a place for themselves when the roleplay start and developing from there, it would speed up the roleplay, since I know most people probably aren't going to survive the initial slow grind.

I'm not sure on how I would handle tamers entering the digital world. Log Horizon kind of had an interesting take on a bunch of powerful people being thrown into an already thriving world, (think political decision while being stuck in a virtual world that already has it's own conflicts) with that in mind I figured the roleplay could follow the popular "forcefully trapped in a MMO" thing that's been popular on recently. This way I could also give motivation to tamers by inputting a rule where they can only return home once the digital world is held together by a single ruler, though I think I'd prefer if all the people playing were doing it out of their freewill, but I'd have to come up with a reasonable means of how that could happen.

I think that's the gift of my thoughts on the roleplay. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can improve some of the basics of it/answers to some of the problems I noted?

@Magic it seems to be quite similar to Monster Art Online that Red's (I think) did a while back - not that I was apart of it I just read the OP once. That being said I really like the sound of this but I have a couple of questions and concerns.

Questions
So, after each chapter our characters are returned to their own rooms?

Will this mean there is no travel throughout the game bar being "warped" to the next level or something?

Is this supposed to be competitive?

How do you beat levels?

Or is there no set way but rather different goals in each level?

Do you intend for players to select their own starter pokemon?

What are these punishments? Or are they not set like rewards?

Concerns

I feel as though all the changing of scenery and these "rooms" could potentially cause minor problems for those whom have to post less frequently.

Positives
You've got a really well thought out RP that is likely to attract a lot of interest and as long as you keep it interesting throughout and the routine of "complete level and then return to solitary" that seems to be implied doesn't give the RP a stale feel it should run smoothly with an easily controlled plot.

The rewards system you have in place seems like it could be very effective.

Overall I think you have the makings of an excellent RP there and the CSS is nice too.

I knew there were lots of questions/problems with it :< hence why it was never posted. Thanks for replying, guys!

They would basically be kidnapped, but they're disappearance can be explained for.
Good point. If they told everyone else they were taking a part-time job or something (whatever they thought it was) it would provide extra cover and explanation for their disappearance.

Just for some other thoughts, where do you think the roleplay would start? I think it might be best to start a bit after they've been kidnapped, so they're kind of experienced with the game and know the consequences of their actions, if they choose to take that path, without wasting time letting characters experience it.
I planned to start it as players woke up in their rooms, with the opening IC post being an introduction/explanation of where they are.

Second, what type of mechanics where you thinking about the game and how do you think people would be able to roleplay it in an enjoyable way. From just initial thoughts, trying to roleplay a classic pokemon game would be a bit difficult if not boring.
The game would be more complex than a basic Pokémon game as it is basically a HD MMO, with player-avatar likeness. The real crux comes in the form of reward/punishments in the real world though.

@Magic it seems to be quite similar to Monster Art Online that Red's (I think) did a while back - not that I was apart of it I just read the OP once. That being said I really like the sound of this but I have a couple of questions and concerns.
Monster Art was more an adapation of Sword Art. Whilst this is similar in some ways (an actual game) there are key differences, such as not being stuck in the game, having to survive/die etc.

QUESTION: So, after each chapter our characters are returned to their own rooms?

Will this mean there is no travel throughout the game bar being "warped" to the next level or something?
There's not levels, as such, more like pauses in the story - think about it in terms of normal pokémon games, chapter 1 might be 'Get the first badge' or something similar. Relatively simple missions with clear instructions.

QUESTION: Is this supposed to be competitive?
There will be elements of competition, sometimes there will be a 'winner' receiving a reward whilst someone else misses out.

QUESTION: How do you beat levels? Or is there no set way but rather different goals in each level?
The latter is correct. Sort of a check list of mission objectives, with a main one needing to be completed.

QUESTION: Do you intend for players to select their own starter pokemon?
Yup! :3

QUESTION: What are these punishments? Or are they not set like rewards?
Punishments are more extreme and will mostly be used to account for missing roleplayers/abandoned characters. Punishment is mostly just a GM tool.

I feel as though all the changing of scenery and these "rooms" could potentially cause minor problems for those whom have to post less frequently.
That is indeed a worry. I would have to limit the amount of people playing, definitely, and make sure there was enough time for people to complete the primary mission. It might be that people who can post more often just get a few more minor rewards for doing extra bits and pieces - or they'll benefit from more interaction. It's always going to be a problem in roleplays, though.

Thank you for the critique and the advice Swifty, it's much appreciated. I think the bullet points sound like a pretty good idea but I doubt we'll be shrinking the glossary much if at all. The reason is that we didn't put that in just to help people understand in the normal sense, we put them in because the Battle Network universe is so full of unique terms and abbreviations that we're not sure how big the glossary will get. And since we as players of pretty much every game in the series are likely to use a lot of those terms (even if accidentally) it will be good to have terms of reference for almost every one of them in there :D
"Ever looking forward, ever thinking back. Everywhere you've been, everyone you've met was another step on your path, shaping your future even as they become part of your past. One must never discount the pieces that have made up your journey until now but to lose yourself in them would be equally great folly, instead let them hoist you up, carry you on until you find the strength to walk for yourself. So it is that I continue towards that endless horizon. Ever thinking back, ever marching forward, inexorable as the history that brought me down this road. This Lonesome Road."

I like the idea, but I'm a bit confused on how the areas will work. With everyone working independently to claim crowns (whilst also behaving as a faction?) it implies that the characters are selfish/power hungry - especially as they'll claim the world as their own. Perhaps if it was more of a united front - ie the Digimon/Tamers are allied with Leomon/other and taking over for him, perhaps it would work better.

I'm also kind of worried the world will be too big to enjoy, another reason to ally the characters. If they each have a world and suddenly there are 20+ players, and NPCs, that's a lot of unique places :P.

For the benefit of Jegretis and Magic who were wanting a dinosaur themed RP. What does everyone think?

Spoiler:

Jurassic Island

--- the STORY ---

It all started as just a regular trip, you boarded a plane in Miami bound for Rio in Brazil at four in the afternoon for whatever your reasons. For four hours, half of the trip, everything was uneventful. During the first four hours of the flight stewards and stewardesses travelled up the isles with carts, the captain’s voice was rarely heard over the intercom, infants cried and passengers tried to distract themselves from the boredom of the flight. Then all hell broke loose.

Air masks fell from the roof of the plane, intense turbulence began to rack the aircraft and the captains voice could be barely distinguished over the rattling of the baggage and windows;
“Attention passengers, our engines are beginning to fail and the cabin has become depressurised. Please cover your mouths with the oxygen masks, assume one of the crash positions demonstrated earlier and prepare for an emergency landing.”

There had been a brief moment of silence, a break from the chaos before the true panic set in. People in the isles rushed to their seats, masks were fasted and just as the last few passengers and crew began to settle into crash positions a grinding noise was heard and the plane began to plummet. There was a dizzying whirl of motion, G-forces wrenched on bodies and there was the impact. Glass went everywhere, the plane was destroyed and bodies were crushed, impaled, battered and broken. You like the others aboard the aircraft would be lost in a state of shock and/or dizziness or simply blacked out. When you eventually came to it would be to a loud noise, almost as if gigantic creatures were taking steps nearby...

You will have survived one disaster, only to have stepped into an even worse hell. There is no working communications equipment in working order, the plan is all but completely destroyed, many of the passengers are injured or dead as are most of the crew… and you have unknowingly just crash landed on an island inhabited by dinosaurs. Throughout this RP, you and your fellow survivors will be forced to deal with the challenges of surviving on this island – struggling against thirst, hunger, the elements, the environment, assorted dramas and of course the dinosaurs. To survive until you’re discovered, if you’re discovered, you will need to unravel the mysteries of the island and adapt to living in an environment where you are no longer at the top of the food chain – but sitting close to the bottom.

--- the GAMEPLAY ---

This RP will be broken up into chapters. Each chapter will work towards a goal of some description incorporating a mix of sandbox RPing and linear plot following the various conflicts and dramas created by this situation and the gradual unravelling of the mysteries of the island.

--- the MAP ---

Don't have one yet

--- the CHAPTERS ---

@gimmepie: I really like the concept. It kinda reminds me of a mix between Lost and Jurassic Park, maybe with a little Cage of Eden. I'm intrigued to know more about the island, but since you don't have a map yet I guess I'll have to wait. Can't wait to see the idea a little more developed to get a better grasp on how it might be played out.

I had originally thought that I'd gotten it finished I guess I hadn't actually gotten around to it though. I have thought a lot about actually using Isla Sorna from the Jurassic Park franchise which would save me having to create my own map probably. The general gist of the island would be that there's beach on the outskirts, thick forest in the middle.

I wouldn't allow 20+ people to roleplay at one time. That's just too many people to manage. That said I thought about having a single faction to start off in, but I didn't really like the idea too much because it would hamper creativity from the players and what I really want is for people to be free to do what they want to the most reasonable degree. I definitely want people working together, so I might ask for people to try and start the roleplay grouped up with similar players, but I don't want everyone to be forced into working together/having to backstab each other. What I might do is just allow accepted players to have their own free spot on the grid (just to clarify this is what I have in mind when I mention areas grid.) and as time goes on I'll just leave players to fight for spots. In the case that the players might leave the roleplay, the area will be free for someone to take over via quest, though a faster means might be preferred. I might also just limit the number of grids to something like 10-15 or drop some if that seems too unreasonable.

The thing is I want the players to have a bit of creative power when it comes to the world.
That's the main reason why I am against a single tamer faction. It would unify everyone's goal and leave little reason to choose to fight against each other. I want people to work together, but I don't want to force every character to start from the same place in a developmental sort of sense.
Well if the numbers got too big, I could always limit what players could do.

I don't think I'm bottle-necking players to be greedy/power hungry because they always have the option to help out with the various factions for the fate of the digital world. They can choose to shape the world in the more orderly image set by the holy knights, or twisted and free image dictated by the demon lords, or take the agenda to change the digital world in an image they prefer or maybe they have a change in mind due to the influence of others. It's all up to what the players choose to do with their characters. The ultimate goal will is to have the world unified so they can get home or in the case of digimon players, have a world unified for their own reasons.

My only question is, has this island been discovered before or not? If there were still dinosaurs living on this island, it would be a huge deal to the outside world and the island would have already been known and people trying to capitalise on it. Or are you doing like the whole Jurassic Park thing where it was an amusement park, but that the Dinosaurs started running amok?

@firelord - A little both you could say I guess, the general idea is that the island is privately owned and that only those who are responsible for the existence of dinosaurs would have known about it. I don't want to delve too deep into that just yet though because it is meant to be unveiled as the plot progresses.

What you haven't taken much advantage of is space. You've got an entire (usually) 1200 or so px and you're using... 569px? Even less so with your additional padding, so less than half. It makes your paragraphs look a little longer, yes, but what I hate about these skinny CSS is that, for me, it's hard to determine proper length. It looks longer, but it isn't.

Try to use 75-85% of the space you have. Blank space is a statement when it comes to marketing and design but when it comes to books, you use it to separate words from the edge of the page and paragraphs. I'd probably get pretty mad if I opened a book and the writing only took up a third of the page.

Well, I'm trying to make it reasonably skinny, because even though I use one of the widest themes I know a lot of people use default and other, much thinner themes, and I don't want to break their width or anything. I was going to use percent but it can be really wonky on phones and other varying devices, so I was hoping to use percent. Technically with the icon and all it is, if I remember correctly, six hundred pixels wide. Is there a possibly better pixel width or some solution you think would be best, all things considered?

I don't mind the skinniness myself, as I use a modern - it looks like it could go to 800px without any damage though.

I think it depends on the roleplay / how long your posts are going to be. Your CSS would be super for short posts, but would make long posts look awkward and long.

The CSS might be 600px wide, but the text is probs 500px or so. I'd say go with the percentage if you can. CSS does not seem to work properly on most mobile devices (especially for the Nintendo ones) so I like to think if you're making CSS, you're making it for PC users.

If you are concerned how it would look on thinner themes, switch to said theme to test it out. Easy done. But there are lots of different variations that would change how your CSS looks. Text size, monitor size, window size (I often have windows half size to multitask), resolution, etc.

So you're creating a CSS for the majority. You can't cater for everyone.

Here's one at 800px width. I attempted a percent-width, but it destroys the illusion of the window and it is impossible to make it look the same at varying width percents. Having pixel lengths means I can keep everything in the proper place no matter the width setting.

Your name will appear green after completing the main task. This ensures you will receive a reward in the next IC post.

Lights flicker on above your head.

A foreign, yet familiar room.

The walls, the floor, the ceiling are all concrete. Where is the door? There isn't one.

Sparse decorations around the room, you recognise them as your things.

One item sticks out. A large TV embedded into the wall, no buttons, no remote - just a screen.

It flickers on by itself. An animated cartoon girl on the display.

- - - - -

"Yippee, you're awake!" The young girl shouts, her short pink hair bobbing as she jumps up and down with excitement, "I have been waiting so long, sleepyhead."

"I heard that you're the best," she says between fits of giggles, "so I wanted to treat you!" Her voice is high pitched, chirpy, bordering on annoying. Behind her a swirling blue pattern adds to the mystery, you have no idea why you are here or who this girl is.

She sticks her tongue out, "You can call me Oakley! We're gonna become good friends, so let's try and get along, m'kay?" The girl is flawlessly animated, even her toothy grin is impressively detailed.

"You're intrigued, right?" She teases, not addressing the kidnap, or any reason for your being here, "You see that headset?" Her finger points down, below the television screen is a strange, helmet like headset.

"Go on, put it on."

You put on the headset, there's no clear on off button, words flash across the visor. "Play?" It asks you. A voice command is all that is needed to accept - with that, your physical body collapses.

Well, hopefully this thread gets some more action soon. In the meantime, though...

What would you guys think of an Ao No Exorcist Roleplay? I sort of had an idea for it (after completely marathoning the series, movie included) and if it would work well in this setting. If you haven't watched/read it, I would highly recommend it.

So I've been in a Digimon phase as of late. With a little (a lot) of help from Kiklion, I have this for people to look over. Comment, criticize, and recommend to your heart's content. I'm sure there will be a lot of it.

Gods Among Us // A DigiRP

With the creation of the real world’s Astanoff-Berry Computer, an artificial lifeform known as Yggdrasil, the Master Computer, formed and with it, the foundations to a realm called the Digital World. The artificial entity evolved as the real world’s computer age progressed, giving it the ability to gain knowledge and power with which it used to shape and form the Digital World and eventually the data which would be used for its first inhabitants. The rate at which the World formed was astounding. In an attempt to evolve it further, Yggdrasil subjected it to a time-shift. Days in the new world were mere minutes compared to that of the real world and by the time the computer age reached what it has today, the Digital World had seemingly finished in its development.

The seventy years of real-time translated to hundreds of thousands of digital cycles. In that time, the Digital World changed in a manner akin to that of Earth. Its continents shifted, its islands and mountains were created and destroyed. Within an even shorter amount of time, Yggdrasil designed and created five realms based upon the cardinal directions of the world and its center. In hopes to give each realm strength and protection, the Sovereigns, a group of five digital lifeforms, were created. From there on, Yggdrasil, with help from the Sovereigns, created enough inhabitants to support the Digital World.

Yggdrasil’s influence slowly grew minimal as it watched its new world. Before long, the data of the world began changing on its own and new lifeforms, now known as Digimon, formed without a creator. Yggdrasil knew its work was almost finished, so in its final effort to insure that the world would be successful, it created another race of lifeform whom he simply named the Guardians. These being, human in appearance and seemingly all-knowing, would be the protectors of the world when it was in need.

***

In 2014, nearly seventy human years later, the Digital World parallels the Real World in many aspects and both are seemingly at the height of their prosperity. That is, of course, until something upsets the balance. Within a matter of months in the Real World, the Digital one was turned upside down. The Digital World and the Digimon who resided in it quickly began to change, almost as if their data was rewritten. Digimon seen as evil by others began to side more with the Digimon of good alignment and for awhile, things were even more peaceful than one would believe.

The peace was short-lived, however, as Digimon who originally were seen as good became evil. Balance was once again restored, but the numbers of now evil Digimon began to overwhelm those of the good. The Guardians quickly stepped in, but they could not find the source of the problem. There was only one possible explanation: The source was on the outside in the world of humans. They could do nothing to stop what was happening, at least not until they found the Great Prophecy that had been left behind by the great Yggdrasil.

As the seeds of change bloom,
an evil’s venom grows stronger.
In time our lands will cripple,
our good will fall ill to its will,
and peace will be no more.
But with a simple call,
great warriors will come
and peace will be restored.

@Watchmen - The story itself seems fine, although I'm not sure how these "great warriors" are going to save anything from inside the world if the problem is from outside. My only other question is what the mechanics of the RP are.

I was actually thinking about that pretty soon after I posted and I was planning on changing it to something like:

The peace was short-lived, however, as Digimon who originally were seen as good became evil. Balance was once again restored, but the numbers of now evil Digimon began to overwhelm those of the good. The Guardians quickly stepped in, but they could not find the source of the problem. The source of the problem could be anywhere, even in the Human world. They could do nothing to stop what was happening, at least not until they found the Great Prophecy that had been left behind by the great Yggdrasil.

And then changing the prophecy to "great warriors who can traverse the worlds will come".

I hope that clears up any problem story-wise. Mechanics-wise however, I was going for a mix of Adventure (Crests and Armor Digivolution) and Tamers (Particularly Bio-Merging). Of course, more mechanics are there (Although they don't come directly to mind) so if there's anything specific, feel free to ask. C:

@Watchman - Personally I think you'd be better of with either just crests or just bio-merging (or what was the one with the like armour stuff... or was that bio-merging?). I didn't really follow digimon further than adventures.

I think that the biggest thing, will be being careful with your mechanics and remembering that you need to try and make it accessible to those without much knowledge of the series without it becoming boring to those who know it or spouting too much information.

The fix to the story was good though.
