Whoo my Wii U came in! Of course yesterday I was too busy to actually get started on playing it so it has to wait until 5 or so tonight when I get home to wait for my new couch.

I don't have a TV so when it told me it had to hook up somewhere to read symbols I was miserable but then I just guessed for half an hour (nothing to lose there) and eventually figured it out. B)
You don't have a TV? Going to play exclusively on the gamepad then?

What games do you have?

All I have is Mario Kart, Wind Waker, and Nintendoland. I'll have a TV in like 2 weeks though.

So does the disc actually go into the game pad, or does it go somewhere else?

No. It goes into the console.

Does the console just look like a regular Wii? I honestly have no real knowledge on the matter.

It looks very similar to the Wii, iirc. It's bulkier, though.

This is how it works basically, after initial setup: you have the console plugged in wherever, with whatever game you want in it. You turn on the console via the gamepad and it gives you the menu, you pick the game from it, and then the game shows up on the gamepad.

I'm sure I'll want a TV eventually but playing it like a handheld suits my purposes and I'm in love with Mario Kart. Even though I suck at it.

You couldn't really blame yourself on the matter. One of the main reasons the Wii U is doing poorly, is because of their poor marketing. Everyone thought it was a peripheral, when it was announced.

Yeah. They honestly should have chosen a name that was NOT "Wii".

Nintendo X, Nintendo Revolution (Wii's original name), iNintendo, anything but calling it Wii U and not showcasing it as a whole new system. Bad marketing at first, but things are picking up for them. A string of solid hits and they should be doing better.

Because Playstation 2, 3, 4 all show succession.

Wii to Wii U does not. When they've branded many of their items, Wii FIT, Wii MOTIONPLUS, Wii NUNCHUCK, Wii etc. The Wii U simply seems like an extension/addition for your Wii console.

Playstation 3 Slim Edition. Xbox 360 Slim (or whatever they call the sleek black one). Wii U.

It's bad marketing and bad branding. Wii 2 would have probably saved them much of their hassle, but the library still needs some padding to truly be fantastic and get people buying it.

That said, I still love my Wii U and consider it a great purchase. I've enjoyed the limited games that I have for it so far and there are many others I still want to buy. :)

But Xbox One doesn't, and that's more of a comparison to Wii U than PS3 and X360.
Xbox One may suffer the same issue that the Wii U has in that unconventional/"clever" names do not work well with the average consumer. As far as I know, the system is suffering from stagnating sales.

Wii U is that the console is for YOU.
Xbox One is that it's an all-in-ONE entertainment system.

Playstation 4 seems to be the one making the biggest dent in sales. I dunno if the successional naming is helping to contribute to that, but I feel that it is.

Nintendo > Super Nintendo > Nintendo 64 > GameCube > Wii > Wii U

Except for perhaps Super, Nintendo hasn't really had a successional naming convention.

NES > SNES and GB > GBA is probably about the same in terms of naming.

Which is why, I feel, the Wii U has had a hard time making a "name" for itself.

All Nintendo systems have had unique names, aside from their handhelds (with exception of the ones you mentioned).

I'd love Nintendo to, eventually, announce a new console with some crazy name like Wii was. People couldn't understand why they'd call it that and it ended up being a hit across the globe (maybe not with hardcore gamers, but...).

Naming succession doesn't do bumpkis in terms of sales, no matter the circumstantial evidence. The PS4 is selling cause of proper marketing, the XBO isn't because of the hot bed of 180s(At this point the number of em being done has literally led the console to be the XBox 720 in the end!) and the Wii U is well....the Wii U. Even if it was the Wii 2 ultra extreme casual edition, it wouldn't sell, because the market Nintendo created in 2006 is the market that has led to mobile game(which in itself is a scary outcome, as in hindsight Nintendo created the monster).

Speaking of sales, despite Nintendo's shortcomings this gen, I think next gen will be quite different. A universal OS across several hardware options with a huge selection of games could be spectacular if done right, and would work much better from a gaming company then from the likes of Apple(Android is still getting the shaft, so I don't quite see it as major of a competitor as Apple). I literally can see Nintendo becoming the direct competitor to Apple next gen if they play their cards right on the digital front, and hell I can see a lot more mobile games being ported to the platform.

Or it's simply because PS4 is the best next gen console.
It may be in the end, but right now it's not. Wii U currently is the best value with the best library. Long-term maybe not.

About best library, I'd say it depends on what kind of games you prefer. Wii U is lacking some good multi-platform titles too. Too bad the devs seem to neglect it or maybe it's Nintendo's fault? Idk

Because it has Mario Kart? Not really.
You pretty much won't find other Wii U game that is in talks than Mario Kart 8.
On PS4, there's Watch_Dogs, The Last of Us Remastered, newest Wolf, newest Infamous.

Its Nintendo's fault mainly, but I think their anti-mobile stance is causing a major boycott amongst the major publishers. And, yes, objectively Nintendo's console does have the best value for money. You got the Wii U's line up, the eShop, the Virtual Console, and then the Wii backlog on top of it.

One great game does not make a console.
  • Bayonetta 1 & 2
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Child of Light
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • DuckTales: Remastered
  • Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition
  • A Hat in Time
  • Hyrule Warriors
  • The Legend of Zelda for Wii U
  • Mario Kart 8
  • Mighty No. 9
  • Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition
  • NES Remix (1 / 2 / Pack)
  • New Super Mario Bros. U (and New Super Luigi U)
  • Nintendoland
  • Pikmin 3
  • Shantae: Half-Genie Hero
  • Shovel Knight
  • Splatoon
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
  • The Wonderful 101
  • Toki Tori (and 2+)
  • Trine Enchanted Edition (and Trine 2 Director's Cut)
  • Yoshi's Wooly World

They're not all Nintendo titles. Some aren't release yet. A good portion of them are eShop titles or not exclusive. But they're all games that, even if not by Nintendo, feel like they belong on a Nintendo platform. It's like a current-gen NES or SNES lineup (minus the JRPGS, unfortunately). They're fun games that don't take themselves too seriously.

How would Nintendo not producing content for tablets and smartphones upset third parties who do?

Wouldn't the third parties prefer not to compete against a Mario or Pokémon title? O_o

But only one of those is an exclusive...so it's not really that different from using Mario Kart as a solitary reason.

Triforce, its all in the mindset created for shareholders. They want Nintendo games on smartphones, they don't, and they get upset. Same shareholders likely own stocks in other gaming companies or would like to. They would likely back out of said 3rd paties if they show support, of the "bad company" thus the lack of support. Sounds crazy, but I can see those mental gymnastics being done.

That second sentence makes literally no sense. Those first two clauses mean "they want X, they don't want X". Can you clarify?
