Do you like it to be called Fairy or Light?

As we all know, Light can be interpreted literally (what your lamp produces) or kindness/goodness/counter to evil, which is exemplified in the Fairy-type in some ways. However, I really don't think you can call the Light-type the same as Fairy. Even in the side of Light that Fairy does cover, it isn't really even exemplified in Fairy-type moves (e.g. Moonblast, Dazzling Gleam, Fairy Wind...).

Because of that, I think Light could still be done (after all, we do have both Flying and Ground), and it would include both kinds of light that I mentioned above. Many people often argue that Dark is Evil in Japanese, but it still covers both the absence of light (Dark Pulse, for example) and evil/naughty actions (Thief). GF would probably never do it, but it's still one of the few possibilities remaining.

A while back I also thought up the Solar-type which would cover Light completely without it being an actual opposite to Dark.

I believe there was a theory made that fighting was actually the so called "light type" because back in the ancient Chinese era, those were believed to be the heroes. I consider Fairies as more of Angels who are watching over those heroes. That's why they are stronger than them, dark types and the evil dragons. However, sometimes evil can be stronger than good, which is why it has the poison and steel weakness.

Not all fairies are girly and cute you know. Just look at Jorgen Von Strangle from Fairly Odd Parents.

And also in many folklore , fairies are evil and scary. They're known to steal babies ,drown people, murder children ,seduce men, steal things ,and even enslaved humans. http://io9.com/the-biggest-reasons-why-fairies-are-evil-510180209 Fairies are only known as cute and girly cause of modern Disney movies with characters like Tinkerbell and other media that are aimed at girls that feature cute faiires.

Unfortunately , the closest Fairy type Pokemon that fits this description are Mawille and Klefki. Klefki being based on the Pagan tradition of blaming fairies for stealing small objects such as keys.
Don't forget bite people, pixies are said to suck blood.

I honestly think the Fairy type should have been called the Light or Magic type, primarily because of the fact that the word "fairy" is commonly associated with small winged creatures like Navi from Zelda. The closest we have to an actual "Fairy" Pokemon is the Flabebe family, being the smallest Pokemon to date, something commonly associated with faries (on that topic, why isn't Florges Fairy/Grass?).

Ugh, the whole "light vs. dark" them is so overdone, it's not even funny. I can't be happier that there isn't a light type, and I hope it stays that way.

You people are throwing the word "girly" around like it's a bad thing. I'm feminine and proud of it.

Light sounds weird, Fairy sounds better in my opinion.
Just hearing that word "fairy" makes me think it's evil, and that's good, at least for me.

I like it that they called them Fairy Pokemon. Crush the idea that fairies are cute and pink and girl's things - show children that they are powerful enough to take down dragons.

People can ♥♥♥♥♥ about wanting Light vs Dark all day long, but that doesn't change the fact that it could have never happened; the Dark type is not called Dark in Japanese, hence no need for a Light type to go alongside with it.

That, and fairies encompass more than just your average tooth fairy, you know. They can be pretty badass in various countries' mythologies, be their name girly or not. Seriously, what's the big deal?

Light is too general. If that had been the name of the new type, many more Pokemon would have acquired a new dual typing like Marill, Mawile and many others did in X and Y. Fairy seems more like a Pokemon type, to me at least, and fits the criteria they were looking for. Something that contrasts heavily with dragons, which I am assuming was their main purpose in creating this new type.

I was never actually fond of the idea of the light type. It would just seem majestic therefore only few pokemon would have it, (like Arceus?). Fairy would fit it better in my opinion. About saying that is sounded feminine, well I like that really. Just makes it unique.

Nnnope. Fairy makes far more sense.

Cause yeah I don't think it's confirmed, but their namesake is assumed to be a play on 'Fairy Tales'. In fairy tales the bad guys are usually dragons, or they have to face off dragons at some point, yes? Well in said fairy tales, the dragons are almost always defeated. So that's where the type advantage ends up making sense.

Light type wouldn't exactly match this play on words well and I'd end up wondering why they have the advantage over Dragons then. Because light isn't exactly something that correlates with dragons as far as I know.

Light is such an overused type. In shows it's so annoying to have some character embodied with Light because we all know it's going to be the most powerful character. Because in real life, light always beats darkness right? I love how Dark types in Pokemon don't show that they're evil, it's just a type.

Personally I like Fairy, I wasn't aware of all the background behind fairies but after reading a lot of the comments here the logic behind choosing "Fairy" makes sense :) With regards to Light I don't think it's concise enough in terms of deciphering what it would be weak to; what Pokémon would fall into that category and even its definition, as in whether Light is referring to an almost weightless Pokémon or if it's supposed to oppose Dark and be benevolent or what lol :)

Light pretty much embody what Fairy types are anyways. Fairy sounds pretty lame to me. I can't help but imagine those big powerful Dragons being reduced into a child's plaything by Fairies. At least Light would've sound 100000x better. It'd probably make Fairy Pokemon sound more majestic and a reason why Dragons should fear them.
Fairy sounds pretty Badass to me... since they are talking about THIS sort of fairy
